  • This video is an introductory and very detailed example demonstrating the application of the principle of virtual work on a cantilever beam. If you have never used the method of virtual work or need a refresher this is a good place to start.
    Part 1: Overview of the approach and calculating the slope at point B.
    Part 2: Calculating the deflection at point B.

      +Segurasegura Jorge no it isn't, castigliano has a lot of similar stuff going on, one might even say it builds on the Virtual Work method, but it is different. Just google it

    Why is it that when you try and make the moment equation starting with the left side it doesn't give you the same equation as starting from the right side if you section the beam? I thought statics should work out whichever way or I'm I doing it wrong?

    12:07 is it right I describe the M function as M = -10 ( 3- x) then 13:49 the rotation will -1/EI * integral { -1 * -10 (3-x)} from 0 to 3 = 45 ?

    Using the princple of virtual displacement with aprrox. with approximate virtual func. below determine the tip displacemen of the beam(&u=(x^2/L^2) &u= (X^3 / L^3) &u=(x^4 /L^4 ) AND &u= lnx /L^4 )

    hello, how do you determine the moment of real loading is -30kNm. what i mean here is how do you know the moment is negative? sorry if i sound like a noob here :(

      Fahmy Hamzany the negative moment depends on the internal sign convention used for the beam. in this example, i am looking at the beam from going left to right and positive internal moments cause compression at the top and tension at the bottom. Hope that helps.

    Isn't the virtual moment function 1KN.x - 3KNm? Did you apply a virtual unit moment when you were to apply a virtual unit load ( 8 min into the video)?

    Why do you apply a moment at the end of the beam instead of a downwards 1 particular load? Would that be the same?

    How do you find the “virtual moment”. This concept makes zero sense to me and I have no idea how you got the numbers that you got.

      You arbitrarily assume a unit moment is applied at the location. How large the moment is, will ultimately cancel out of the equation, so to keep it simple, you assume it is 1 N-m.
