Just planted 5 Pudger Butterfly bushes in full sun. I am so thrilled to watch them grow and bloom. Thanks for all the great tips. Hopefully, they will thrive.
I am in zone 9. I have lots of butterfly bushes. I did everything you said not to do. They get blazing sun all day & I do water them 2x pr day. Now I am scared to water them. I deadhead because when I do 2 new blooms replace the one I cut off. They are doing just fine. I will be very careful not to over water. You may have saved their life. Glad I clicked on this video. Congratulations on getting a new baby!!!
I just bought a butterfly bush October 18th in Northeast Ohio, zone 6. It's still warm but has had some 50° mornings. I have my hole dug and I almost went to the store and bought some in ground planting mix to amend the soil because when I got to a certain depth I got a lot of clay, but you said not to so I will save the money. I'll make sure I mix it up good with my garden claw. It made me laugh when you showed how to overwinter your potted plants and you wrapped them in burlap and put a pretty bow on them. Of course you would, you're so fancy. LOL 😆💗 I love your channel. Pease keep showing any messes or situations you run into because you have such a vast property and it's so gorgeous and fancy and it sometimes intimidates me but when you show weeds and you show the process that you have to go through to get it there, it gives me hope and it makes me feel like you deal with the same things that everyone else does and encourages me. If I see all your gorgeous finished gardening, it discourages me.
I was given s butterfly bush several years ago and was doing all the right things accidentally. Thank you for your information and verifying everything I was doing was right. It's just thriving.,👍
You’re so right about the sun. When I bought our PW Pugster we wanted it near us to watch the butterflies flutter around it. The flower spikes were at least 6in in length but the spot to observe only had maybe 3hrs of hot mid day sun. Well the flower spike were getting smaller & smaller to maybe 1in as time went on. Moved it to 6-7hrs of sun & wow…they came back fast to about 4-5in. We have clay soil so I amended but in another video it said not to do that even in clay soil. PW website said that as well. We have underground critters & fear they’ll ruin the plant. Decided to plant in a large 2ft across planter then wrap in the winter hoping it’ll survive. Love your videos. Learn so much
I have 3 one year old bushes started from cuttings, all from the same parent. I planted one in all day sun, one in partial shade, and one in all day shade. The best performance for growth goes to the one in partial shade, the slowest growth was the full shade one. Blossom counts were nearly equal across all three. It appeared that the more I watered the more blossom response I received from all three. However, extreme drought is the common description used for our region (western Oregon) for the past 6 to 8 weeks, with much more expected.
I have two butterfly bushes that are almost in complete shade and they are thriving. The one almost died when it was in full sun. Moved it to full shade and it's been blooming and growing like crazy
I’m a new gardener and just bought one. I planted in a large container. It was discounted and not in the best condition when I got it, only had one bloom. I pruned dead limbs and put in full sun as directed on my back deck, which seemed to burn the one bloom. Smaller blooms were limp in 90 degree sun here in Atlanta, Ga in July. I moved to more shade and it looks healthier, more blooms starting to appear. I think I’m zone 7b.
@@Ret2Play I'm in TX 8a, thank you for your advice! I just put a BB in a flower bed that gets blasted by the sun but at least it's not all day. I hope it does well.
@@Ret2Play I'm in a similar situation - I just got a butterfly bush May30, the blooms are all dead and I see a bit of dead stalks just above the soil. But there is plenty of life on all the stalks -- but at the end of the stalks leaves green and not crunchy, but just near the soil it does not look good. Its weird. I planted it in the ground today --- so hoping it will come back THIS YEAR. MY FINGERS ARE CROSSED 🤞🏾 SHOULD i prune it down as low as the soil? or deadhead? Or wait for some new growth or leave it alone this season? I know it will come back (hopefully😊) but can I do ANYTHING to get it to come back THIS year?
Same. I had mine in full.sun for two years and it didn't thrive. I transplanted to partial shade and it's bounced back to perfect health over the past two years.
Thank you Laura. Zone 8a here. Just picked up a butterfly bush and was planning on a spot that I now know wasn't sunny enough. Thanks for the tips. Great advice as always!
I have three butterfly bushes one in a large pot in my front yard. That was thriving and I just lost it this winter and I’m crushed and two in the ground that get hardly any blooms cause I have very clear like soil but they are second-story so I’m going to have to trim them down now. But they are absolutely beautiful and they bring tons of butterflies.
I recently planted Miss Molly...and came across this video today....very helpful!! I need to move my Miss Molly. Focussing on a single popular plant(or group like lavender) could be very helpful for many as you are able to give specifics given your knowledge and experience. Thank you Laura. I enjoy and look forward to ALL your videos
I have two, one light purple and one white that popped up in the yard. So I moved them and they did great. It's not as much sun as I would like but I don't have a lot of areas with full sun. The flowers were just smaller but the butterflies and bees didn't mind! The hummingbirds liked them as well! And I just found another one which popped up in a planter.
My butterfly bushes are planted in clay soil and have rocks on the top. I’m in CO. I have several volunteers that have chosen all different areas and light to grow... I love them!
Omg after watching this I realized I broke every rule she mentioned how ever my butterfly bush absolutely loves what ever I did she is hudge at this point and when I planted her she was just a baby 😥 and I didn't even think she would live considering I have clay soil I live in SW Virginia in the blue ridge mountains I'm assuming because live deep in the woods my soil is highly nutritious from the natural mulch/ humus the soil has in it because alot of my plants surprisingly due well in clay.. Its amazing watching plants go from little fragile sprouts to healthy full adults.
You should totally write a book that is filled with your knowledge & beautiful photos & you could even go personal on how you met Aaron & the garden center & such! Sorry had this idea this morning & am excited to share. I know, I for one would buy it, for your Instagram photos are so wonderful & your knowledge is so vast. I've never ever been more excited to garden than I have watching your videos. Just an idea. :) I know I would love to sit down & read it with a cup of coffee on a chilly autumn morn.
So I planted two butterfly bushes in smart pots and they did really well. Now it's getting cold and winter is coming so I'm trying to decide what to do with them. I can put them in the garage where it gets cold but not as bad as outdoors.
So glad to see this video! We planted a "Miss Ruby" butterfly bush at the beginning of the season and it has done wonderfully but I was wondering about deadheading/pruning, so this is perfect!
Yes this and one other vid as Im getting ready to plant a Miss Molly in the spring. Odd that nursery vids show to plant above soil level and a more recent one planted below soil level. Some say add organic mulch or compost and others say dont ,, thats why I say if you are a seasoned gardner go with what you know. for your area.
Thank you. We love butterfly bushes so much here in So. California, but ours are always attacked by the Buddleia Budworm and we've had trouble controlling them once they lodge themselves into the emerging blossoms.
Would you please do a video on just pruning butterfly bushes? I would feel more comfortable seeing you do this. I planted a butterfly/humming bird garden this year. Plants are looking happy. But I need more info on the upkeep. Thanks!
I don't know where you are, but in the Midwest US, I just let them die back every year & never prune them. They start over from the roots every year & never get big enough to need pruning.
I’m so happy I found this video! Lol. I did all of the wrong things for my butterfly garden and I need to redo everything. I was actually going to redo it during the winter in Florida 😅
I got one two years ago but then my parents decided to move it closer to the curve. Last summer there was a big heat wave in southern ca and all the leaves died. Then my dad trimmed it all in summer because it was ugly. It didn’t survive 😅. We just got a new one today for 3 bucks and super excited.
I planted mine today in sweden (comparable to zone 6 in the USA) which i hope won't be too late, it thaws and refreezes a lot of the time during winter here though.
If you live in zone 4,5, or 6 insulate your Butterfly Bush in the Fall before winter sets in. The way that I insulate mine is to dump the grass clippings on it from my mower bag. Then I dump my rabbits manure. Next I lay coffee filters and grounds from Starbucks. I don’t pack any of this bc it packs itself. Prune it before it leafs out bc IF you insulated it, then it survived! I pruned mine in April. I took a hedge trimmer to the thicker wood that the nursery did not prune prior to my getting it. It does NOT bloom on old wood. New green sprouts will shoot out at the end of April. It is not a spring bulb so don’t be looking for it to come up with Snowdrops and Hyacinth. They can not be invasive in zones 4,5, or 6 bc we have winter. In April. I carefully pull the smoking winter packing back to allow for better photosynthesis. You will see turquoise colored fungus this is good! Butterfly Bushes CAN NOT survive zones 4,5,and 6 without insulation. I lost (10) of them before I started insulating them. I know! Butterfly Bushes are a Nectar plant not a Host plant. It is VERY necessary to support monarchs nutrition for their L. O. N. G haul back to Mexico. These bushes are kinda like human bars. You will see them having meet ups on this bush. You can also tag your monarchs, using Chip Taylor’s tags, ie stickers, retrieving them from this Bush.
I moved into a house in NC with a butterfly bush out near the road. It was clear it had been neglected, very stringy like, and very few blooms now. I plan on cutting it down , about 3" from the ground at the end of winter. Should I feed it? Glad you mentioned the soil, because it's mostly clay type soil here, so I will leave that alone. Thanks!
Wow you did a great job on that fence so amazing how you got it in the ground too. It’s going to be exciting to plant all those flower and see how exciting to see the eggs turn to Chrysalis then butterfly. I have a netted cage and cut the branches with the eggs on them and put them in the cage and watch them grow.
Odd with laura's thoughts on planting. On the Miss Molly that I received on the tag from Proven Winners in the directions one of the steps plainly states to add 2-3" of mulch although does not say what kind. From all Ive read there are as many different thoughts as there are people who give their thoughts.
So glad I didn't prune mine in autumn - I just didn't get around to it and now I'm glad. It's leafed out (spring here in New Zealand) and I'll give it a trim. Thanks so much for this super useful (and timely) info!
I am busy planting a two acre garden for Honeybees. It is a new place for me and have been landscaping for forty years. I really like your videos. Good to see varying points of view as to how and where things grow considering where you are. look forward to see how your landscape progresses. I am a hundred miles from Bellingrath Gardens and that place made me want a smaller version for myself. If you are not familiar with this place I would strongly suggest a visit. It is better than Callaway by a longshot.
they are near impossible to kill here in western washington, and i have tried. Completely swore off them no matter how pretty they are. But, i just might give that Miss series a try :)
I live in zone 7. Red clay soil. I planted my bushes in full sun with amended soil and I mulched. My butterfly bushes take care of themselves. I only prune and they are super happy and beautiful. Butterflies and bees love them.
Just got a butterfly bush a week ago. I have been researching how to plant it and where. I know I shouldn’t water it much but when do I know if the butterfly bush needs water of if it has had to much water? My bush doesn’t look to good now so I am not sure it needs water or if the rain that came down yesterday made it over watered. It’s still in the container until I can figure out where to plant it. I am not good with plants so I need something that I can plant and forget. This bush was a gift from a friend who gave it to me after my father passed away. She wanted me to have it so every year, when the butterflies come I will think of my father. So this bush means a lot to me I don’t want to see it die.
Hi Laura, many thanks for the tip on not over watering the butterfly bush (buddlier as its called in England). I have been doing this as I thought with the full sun it needed it.
I planted mine Ina bed with hydrangeas last fall. Seems to be doing well. Maybe the hydrangeas take all the water. I also mulched around it since I do the whole bed. Thanks for all the great tips.
I have a butterfly bush that's in it's second year in a pot (I live in an apartment.) It miraculously survived the winter in the pot without being winterized and is now healthy, full, and starting to produce flowers! I love how hearty this plant is and my local humming birds love it too!
Anita Myszk just give it some protection from the elements, wind, rain and barefrost without snow is one of the worst plant killers, also the early spring sun, with wind frost and drought is another one to look out for..
Hmmmmm I guess I’ll have to move mine in the spring, it did alright this summer, but not as good as I thought it would but that could be lack of sun!! Good to know!!
Hi Laura, brand new to your videos for 2 months now. Luv what you do. You are awesome amd we learn a lot from you. I think it is great that you do videos about individual plants. I was wondering when to trim my reblooming lilac to bush it out more. You answered my question. Thank you and keep up the all your great work and keep the individual plant and or shrubs videos coming.
Im finding there are as many different thoughts on caring for BB as there are different kinds of bushes. Some say amend , some say dont, some say mulch some say dont. What it will mostly come down to is the location of where you live and what kind of natural soil you have. If you are a gardener go by what you know and feel is right.
I always prune my butterfly bushes in March. As soon as I see St Patrick’s Day decorations go up in stores and restaurants I know it’s time to cut the butterfly bush as far down as possible. I have 2 Pink Beauties and a purple one that planted itself. I cut them down to a stump about 10” above ground. I live in zone 6-7 where it gets very cold in winter. The bushes come back beautifully in late July with fantastic blooms. I absolutely deadhead them and get plenty of blooms until the first week of October. That’s when they revert to grey leaves and go dormant. I leave them like that until March, when I prune fairly drastically. Be careful deadheading though because butterfly bushes have tiny, sharp little bits that you can inhale and they will make you cough like crazy. .
@Alfred... that’s the most concise instructions in these comments I’ve heard! I’m going to snapshot it to follow... Oh, by-the-way...you know you have the invasive one, right? You may need to call your local cooperative exchange.
I just received three kaleidascope butterfly bushes in boxes. I'm in growing zone 7b (georgia). Even though these came with a few leaves and the roots should I still plant with no other soils. We have a very clay soil here. Thanks Randy
Hi Laura, I know this video is older but I’m hoping you’ll see this question. I bought some butterfly bushes that were on clearance at a big box store. They’re in full sun now, but is really hot here (100+). The leaves are pretty crispy. Should I cut them back?
Mine have never thrived in full sun. I've had to transplant them all over the years to partial shade or most are in morning sun/shade in the afternoon. They've never looked healthier or bloomed as heavily
I have over watered one pf my butterful bushes after l had to move it into a different position. If l stop watering, will it recover. It is planted high as you recommended.
Thank you so much. You answered all of my questions. Now, I hope you have one on Astilbes. I bought a beautiful one that the nursery clearanced out. I'm usually pretty good at bringing their next to dead plants back, but I must be doing something wrong with this one.
Well, I broke every rule on the video...lol. I have a slight, new green growth on the bottom, so I'm not sure if it's dead, but the other videos seem to say they're late bloomers, so it's early, and I'll wait.
I have branches that are on the ground. What is best way to lift up the bottom of the plant? What kind of item (like circular wire thingy that peonies have) can help?
Thank you for yet another informative video. Unfortunaly it means I'll never be able to grow one, due to the lack of full sun. And on a side note: I love your coffee mug, it's beautiful.
I planted one about 7 years ago and it's doing great in part sun of about only 4hours a day...it was about 10 ft high and 8 ft wide before I trimmed it back. .so you could still try..
My mum has one taking up the front garden the branches are huge. Is there anyway to prune them back or shape the branches? Can you break the roots up a bit like lavender? Although the roots are probably more like branches now, it’s been in the ground for at least 10years.
Nothing wrong with second storey especially if you cut off all the lower horizontal branches up to 5 feet and under plant it with something like perennial helianthus - stunning combo fro a distance.
Just planted 5 Pudger Butterfly bushes in full sun. I am so thrilled to watch them grow and bloom. Thanks for all the great tips. Hopefully, they will thrive.

@Jessica...really...didn’t she say in clay no amend and no mulch?? I’m in same zone 7...mine stays mini. Blooms. Frustrating no growth
Wow. You packed a lot of info in. Didn't know they were so fussy. Thanks.
K Z right?! I thought they were so tough.

Fast talker. She’s a master and energetic.
Merci! Delicious...
I have a butterfly bush that's in it's second year in a pot (I live in an apartment.) It miraculously survived the winter in the pot without being winterized and is now healthy, full, and starting to produce flowers! I love how hearty this plant is and my local humming birds love it too!
Thank you for this video it helped me decide when to prune my bush.
What about planting in sandy areas. Thank u for this video now I know why mine all died and will be doing things differently 💕
Thank you for all the info. Just planted my first butterfly bush mid-September. Hope it survives through the winter and brings me joy next year.
Anita Myszk just give it some protection from the elements, wind, rain and barefrost without snow is one of the worst plant killers, also the early spring sun, with wind frost and drought is another one to look out for..
@@ThorKipperberg lol Just saw you answered similarly here, but no info on what that protection is if we can't use mulch.
M A Walker ... protection like cloth as shown in vid. No extra moisture. No mulch. It’s a prissy bush that like Arizona weather dry and hot. Lol
@Anita ...zone matters. Think desert...plant raw. Maintain water. Like Arizona damp free. Dry. Like a prissy plant.
Hmmmmm I guess I’ll have to move mine in the spring, it did alright this summer, but not as good as I thought it would but that could be lack of sun!! Good to know!!
I like that coffee cup!
Gorgeous cup!!! Do tell!!!!!!!!!!!
So helpful. I have a largish one that partially uprooted in a bad wind. Do you think I can stake it back down? 😢
Thank you so much for this video. I have to go out now and change my bush location. Hope it gets better!
My butterfly bush plant is in a rather shallow container and she just dries out in the sun , she loves shade
I love butterfly bushes. My mum's boyfriend had two of them. He rarely Pruned them and they grew out of control.
@Lauren...I’m curious any butterfly 🦋 on it
one of mine is in partial sun and it’s thriving
Hi Laura, brand new to your videos for 2 months now. Luv what you do. You are awesome amd we learn a lot from you. I think it is great that you do videos about individual plants. I was wondering when to trim my reblooming lilac to bush it out more. You answered my question. Thank you and keep up the all your great work and keep the individual plant and or shrubs videos coming.
I love your coffee mug!,
Im finding there are as many different thoughts on caring for BB as there are different kinds of bushes. Some say amend , some say dont, some say mulch some say dont. What it will mostly come down to is the location of where you live and what kind of natural soil you have. If you are a gardener go by what you know and feel is right.
I pruned in Fall two years ago. It didn’t look great last year. I can’t tell if its dead. When I cut a branch its alive inside.
thanks so much for all the tips! I live in NorthEast and Im thinking I should wait to purchase untill spring?
I'm just below you in Ca. My bushes don't like full sun, the summers are very hot and dry, have to water alot.
@Barbara... ummm...that’s the idea
Think Arizona dry
Think prissy plant no damp
Water to refresh
Omg Laura your so beautiful and so smart!
Great video!!! Answered all questions I had!!! Thanks 👍
I just received three kaleidascope butterfly bushes in boxes. I'm in growing zone 7b (georgia). Even though these came with a few leaves and the roots should I still plant with no other soils. We have a very clay soil here. Thanks Randy
I love your videos. They help me so much in my struggling garden. You answered my one question about planting in a pot, so, thank you.
Stay safe.
Thanks your videos always saves the day
Hi Laura, I know this video is older but I’m hoping you’ll see this question. I bought some butterfly bushes that were on clearance at a big box store. They’re in full sun now, but is really hot here (100+). The leaves are pretty crispy. Should I cut them back?
Very informative! What about fertilizer?
Thanks for the info! So I am planting my butterfly bush in the ground tomorrow!!!
great info now I know why my for butterfly bushes over the years have died I plan to have better success now
Very helpful tips. Thanks for sharing 👍 Very much appreciated
@agd0012000... try channel Y Garden
Do tip cares for herbs like rosemary and flowers for lavender please
Well, I broke every rule on the video...lol. I have a slight, new green growth on the bottom, so I'm not sure if it's dead, but the other videos seem to say they're late bloomers, so it's early, and I'll wait.
what are different sizes of the bush that you mentioned? What companion plant for the caterpillars?---they need food!
Butterfly bush summer lilac
I have branches that are on the ground. What is best way to lift up the bottom of the plant? What kind of item (like circular wire thingy that peonies have) can help?
Oh man, I just planted a butterfly bush the other day and I broke most of these rules. 🤣🤣🤣 Glad it’s under warranty for a year!
When do I exactly prune my butterfly bush for winter Joanne from Circleville Ohio
They’re great for bees too….my Guara garden is buzzing
Thank you for yet another informative video. Unfortunaly it means I'll never be able to grow one, due to the lack of full sun.
And on a side note: I love your coffee mug, it's beautiful.
I planted one about 7 years ago and it's doing great in part sun of about only 4hours a day...it was about 10 ft high and 8 ft wide before I trimmed it back. .so you could still try..
@@southernwildlife6517 Thank you for that information. I will definitely give it a try 😊👍
I think I love you 😂 answers for all my questions 🌹❤️
My mum has one taking up the front garden the branches are huge. Is there anyway to prune them back or shape the branches?
Can you break the roots up a bit like lavender? Although the roots are probably more like branches now, it’s been in the ground for at least 10years.
As usual Laura, great tips! Your forever viewer!!!👍🍃🌳🌿🌹🐞
You are glowing!!!
Thank you. Great tips.
I think I will get one next year. I have full sun out front
Nothing wrong with second storey especially if you cut off all the lower horizontal branches up to 5 feet and under plant it with something like perennial helianthus - stunning combo fro a distance.
Excellent video, very concise!
