I actually adore your character redesigns! You took the established characterizations and matured their interests into something that actually makes sense even while adding a new interpretation to everything!

Also, I really really LOVE your version of Fred! I will admit I've seen him as the 'Dad friend' in the group since I was a child, and seeing him mature into a more grounded and focused character is pretty awesome. : )

I love the redesigns, I do think maybe Freddy and Shaggy are too similar in an identifiable silhouette kind of way, just the long hair, cropped jacket, wider leg pant - they just read like very similar designs. Maybe swapping Shaggy's jacket for like a normal length hoodie or shortening Fred's hair would help - but I do think overall you did capture their characters in both a very unique but still recognizable way.
I love the group dynamics, and would watch this version of the show in a heartbeat. These are character so many of us grew up with and love immensely, and you can feel that in the care you took with your redesigns, and the way you've shaped their personalities and friendship.
I feel like the biggest misstep in the show was setting it in high school, once you remember that Fred is a minor a lot of the stuff to do with his parents gets straight up uncomfortable to watch. Like, the show tries to paint him as this super-priviledged character and it falls flat because we're straight up watching a child get horribly abused by his parents before he ends up losing everything. Weirdly enough the rich white dude ends up the biggest victim of the patriarchy and I'm genuinely unsure if that was intentional on the show's part or not.
I agree, the fact that he's a kid just made me feel bad for him and it ruined the jokes they were trying to make. Probably not their intention. I think they were going for the hateable dumb jock character (Like Todd from Nimona) but somehow made him the only one with funny dialogue🤷♀️

I’ve heard that mystery Inc fred is also autistic coded or that they meant to make him autistic coded so that might influence how he’s written in that show in particular.
Overall I think this is super interesting! I really like the changes you made for most of these characters!! This is a lot of fun.

I'm actually doing something similar where I redesign the Scooby-Doo gang with a more original 1970s style. I'm making sure all of them keep their original personalities with some few added additions. Heck, I'm reworking on an old fanfiction called The Hauntings of Crystal Cove where I use Mystery Incorporated as the main inspiration. Coincidentally, I had also made Fred a mechanic but he does it in secret since his dad wants him to focus more on politics.
That is SO COOL. I would love to see them in a 70s style! Whether in video form or just illustrations, I really want to see your version 👀 where can I read the fanfiction?
I love your take on what the show could have been, it’s also nice to see somebody else who’s favourite Scooby Doo iteration was Mystery Incorporated, I have so many fond memories of watching that one when I was younger. I’m not sure if I could pick a particular favourite character you rewrote because I really like them all, but my favourite character dynamics you described are definitely Velma and Daphne dating, as well as Fred and Daphne’s brother-sister like bond. I just adore any kind of sibling like relationship in stories.
This is a great idea and I just wish this is what we actually got instead of the show Velma, I would definitely watch this if it were a real show.

i am LIVING for your take on the gang, especially fred. i do wanna point out velma is canonically a lesbian, not bisexual. but otherwise i really love all of this, you did such a great job changing them without losing what makes these characters so beloved in the first place. and your designs are cute.
Thanks! I really tried to capture their essence while doing something new. Also, I did hear about Velma being canonically lesbian but I thought the guy confirmed that for his specific rendition of Velma which was the Mystery Inc one. But if she's a lesbian in general across every version I love that ❤
But what about in mystery inc where she’s attracted to shaggy? Is that retconned then?
@@kamthefriend5847 in mystery inc. she basically tried to force herself to be attracted to shaggy, changing the things that she thought made him unattractive to her physically before realizing the biggest reason she wasn't truly attracted to him was that he was male, not female. the girl they called "hot dog water" or Marcy ended up Velma's girlfriend but they couldn't outright say it at the time cuz it would've got the show cancelled.

@@kamthefriend5847 i mean as a gay man, i've definitely had times where i was "attracted to" or tried to convince myself i was attracted to a lady friend. pretty sure lesbians go through the same thing but with men. maybe it wasn't written with these experiences in mind, maybe it was. regardless it doesn't contradict her lesbianism
This is beautiful and it hurts to think this is what could have been. On the serious note I love how the you got the main point of the Scooby Doo gang, the friendship and how they balance each other out.

I love the idea of making Fred a mechanical kinda guy, working with cars and traps is a great addition to his character it ties really well! I think your whole design for the gang is great and the attention to why they work the way they do is great, I could really imagine this as a quirky teen show or even a comic
Tbh I feel like Shaggy would be AroAce but other than that, I love what you did with the characters ^^
To me growing up, I always saw him as demisexual. He wasn’t immediately interested in beautiful women, but if you had a great personality, he would slowly get into you romantically. Then again, I might be projecting because of my own sexuality

About Fred liking guys, I asked my parents when I was Fred for Halloween what his character even was, mainly because I only vaguely remembered his character in Mystery Inc. Since I've been out for a while, my mom made a joke that he was "gay just like me--" I didn't remember that, so I asked my dad and my aunt about it. Apparently a common thought when Scooby-Doo was in its first few shows and reboots and such was that Fred was gay because of his complete obliviousness about Daphne. I think he's always had mild gay coding, even if it wasn't that intended in the first few runs.

The show feels like the characters are being cosplayed. This could have been it’s own show originally.

Fred does have such dad energy, and I could actually see him being gay. I love your renditions of the gang and they're really respectful to the original. I would have been eager to watch your rendition because it's a new spin on characters that I've loved for so long.

I feel like it would've been better if it was kind of like a supernatural type version of Scooby Doo, where it's technically darker and more realistic, but at it's core it's still scooby doo

I dont know why, but when you were drawing shaggy I really thought you were gonna give him vitiligo, and now I cant get that image out of my head. So thanks for the random burst of creativity! XD
(Also people not knowing Shaggys name was Norville pissed me off so much. I grew up on 'What's New, Scooby-Doo?' series and it was almost every other week they'd visit a member of his family and his name would get mentioned)

I'm trying to think what could be my favorite, but I cannot. I was interested that Daphnie brings Velma along while she does interviews because she has a bad memory, plus its a great way for them to bond since Daphnie will have a crush on Velma 😊

I like all the outfits and I know you slightly changed their personalities but I personally think that there is something off with Velma's outfit. I think it is the color.

Lastly I have mixed feelings on Fred's outfit because I think it fits him. Like color and personality but to me it always feels weird when he doesn't have his Ascot(?). Also yes Bellbottoms for him!
Overall I really like your art and most of the changes.
The outfits really are pretty/cool though. My favorite is a tie between Daphne and Fred leaning towards Fred.
I do think it is difficult to update the outfits of characters that barely changed (sometimes) in the past 50(?) years

You didn't sound mean at all! I did ask what you thought in the video and I appreciate the feedback 😊 someone else said something about velma's outfit too, it needs more red. Also I did make shaggy pretty different, I think too cool? The goofiness is not really there anymore. With Fred, there's a orange rag in his pocket which is supposed to be a nod to the ascot. Maybe too subtle 😅

So cute! I also really like that you leaned into their outcast (and let’s be honest neurodivergent, Fred’s autistic af) traits. I really enjoyed the video but I did want to recommend that you lower the volume of the clips. You have a really nice and soft voice but a lot of the clips and music are much louder so it can be a bit startling when they kick in. Audio balancing is tricky but it really helps make a video more smooth!
I'm not an avid watcher of Scooby Doo but the fact that this Shaggy reminds me of Magnus Chase is kinda funny to me.

Shaggy's silhouette should always be rounded and/or some type of floofy in the head area imo

Honestly I like your changes especially your changes to Fred all my life i didnt think he was gay i mostly thought he was ace with a tying people up kink. And making him a mechanic is waaaay better than a football guy. Ive seen him break down over his van more times than even say anything about football. Over all i like the changes in his style and background that you made but i like the look of Velma more

I think keeping the recognizable silhouettes is definately a must. Or at least have them slowly morph into it over time.
I’m also just against race-swapping as a whole, i think its… yikes, i mean, think about it, what kind of message is it to give the white characters to black people only after its been milked dry? Its hand me downs, and its mainly due to hollywood being too much of a coward to take a chance on new projects without brand recognition as a whole.

Yeah, now that I'm looking at it again, I gave her a lot of earthy tones but she lacks that iconic red or maroonish color. But I used boxier shapes because squares usually = grounded characters. But, I don't have a problem with race swapping. I would prefer original stories with black and Queer characters. Still, sometimes it's nice to see a part of yourself in something you grew up with (ie. The new little mermaid movie) Unless it's something like Velma, race swapped or not, what's the point of representation if the characters are poorly written? Quick google search: Shaggy does like Anakin

Though the HCs sometimes make them a poly group, mainly with Fred's one line of 'it' Fred. But Freddy if we're dating' and later Shaggy proceeds to call him Freddy (and people point out the whole gang calls him that) but I love Velma and Daph bein a wlw couple, Shaggy being kinda dumb about romance (maybe aroace coded?) and Fred being a gay himbo.
My cousin made me watch just the first episode with him and ... My god I couldn't stand it LMFAO
It is sorta fun to watch a show for the sake of making fun of it with a friend though. Still couldn't make it past one episode but it was fun

I doesnt quite work with your time line, but, I love the idea that Daphne comes up to Shaggy to pet Scoob. Shaggy tries to start his fuckboi stuff, and then clocks that Daphe is head over heels for Velma and gives up. But Fred doesn't realise that and part of the reason he's tense with Shaggy is because he thinks that Shaggy is going to try and use Daphne and break her heart. Just a running joke of Fred and Velma being totally oblivious to Daphnes huge crush that everyone else can see really obviously.

This video was a treat, both in characterization/storytelling and with how the designs turned out! Maybe the fact that I’m also bi helps with that second bit though… you drew them all so pretty…
I remember watching the original Scooby Doo when I was younger, and then I started to watch a few of the movies, I loved all the characters given their unique traits but Shaggy and Fred were my favorites out of everyone and I hated how they massacre my baby Fred and Shaggy in Velma like.... I know that in the other adaptations Fred was a little bit of an airhead but he was an kind dude, but in this one, they gave him no liking points even after 'fixing' his character by making him read an book and for Shaggy, they constantly bring up that he doesn't smoke or does drugs, and they got rid of his love for food :( and like you mentioned the signs were there in the original

personally I think its sad that no ones redesigns of these characters keep daphne as asian, thats the one thing I liked ab velma as we need more rep. other than that, these are all great designs and ideas!

My personal way of gaging how much I like characters, is if I'm giving them headcanons and right off the bat, and I like the idea of Shaggy being trans, but thats cuz it's my headcanon in the show (franchise?) itself, not for any reason but he's my favorite, and I'm a trans man :3
