I’ve been in the Haunt industry most of my life.. I currently run a large Haunted House out of my home, and plan on bringing it to a building this upcoming season. Everything you said about how haunted houses should be inviting of cameras for business/promotion is extremely true, especially now because of the insane reach social media brings to them. Many haunt owners have been in the industry for a long long time, and they aren’t used to people wanting to record everything, I will say many haunts are switching to being more inviting of people recording/the media pass option though which is great. A few reasons why some don’t allow it still are… They don’t change enough year to year and keep the general rooms/scares the same. This means any footage from the previous year watched by new guests spoils the secrets. The most well known and admired haunts change enough that this shouldn’t matter though. Another reason being small portions of the haunt the owner doesn’t want getting revealed, even with media passes. Usually with a media pass, the pass holder still is given a set of rules and sometimes is specifically told not to record a certain scare/section because it is unique to that haunt only. These haunts don’t want general public recording because they don’t want to have to lay out those rules to every single person/have someone record it even after being told not to. Media pass holders usually have to get the video reviewed by the owner in this case just to be sure they didn’t capture anything unwanted. Actors are also taught to react different to cameras in some instances, for example in a scare that usually targets the second/third person in the group, that actor has to be notified if a camera is coming through so they can switch up their timing in order to scare the first person (the camera) Still though, everything you said about how recording would only help the business was correct, I allow everyone to record through my whole experience because I change enough each year + I understand how big of a help it is to the business. And denying someone with a following as large as you is definitely a mistake on their part, that could’ve been great promotion for them especially because of your initial positive look at the haunt. Anyways, hope this helps everyone understand a bit of why they were so strict about it, not sure why they didn’t mind the people recording on their phones though, kind of ironic lol Ps.
