I posted this on the original video but I think it bears repeating. Greenberg and Pyszczynski (1985) doesn't show what Kormantine claims it does and really isn't relevant to this discussion. The experiment was designed to test whether hearing a derogatory comment (the gamer word) about a black person affected white evaluations of the target's performance (in a debate in this example). In every case, the use of the term was clearly malicious and spoken publicly in front of perfect strangers. The circumstances between this test and Destiny's private jokes between close friends are nothing alike. And even if the situations were similar, I think we should be skeptical about the generalizibility of a lot of social psychological literature (particularly when the research on the topic is so limited and the sample sizes small, like with this paper). Hearing people like Kormantine cite a single paper on a relatively novel subject as though its findings constitute some divine law of human behavior is both painful and epistemologically illiterate.

I know this video is old now, and I’ve probably said it before, but I was perusing a bunch of lefty content a while back, and all I heard about Destiny was how bad he was. How he did a good job at shutting down alt-righters, but that he didn’t care about furthering a leftist agenda. And there was a lot of ad-hom attacks on him, and I ALMOST bought into them. I’m not active enough in social media to ever be involved in any kind of flame wars or anything, but I almost bought what I heard about Destiny hook, line and sinker. And then, I watched his debate with Non Compete. It was the first time I ever heard Destiny speak, and he just absolutely demolished Non Compete AND his wife in that debate. NC had no substantiated facts or anything to really back up his arguments, and Destiny had answers for everything. Not only that, but he had good, convincing arguments for all of his points. I started watching more of his videos, and I noticed that Destiny is pretty much always able to substantiate everything he says, and his viewpoints are actually grounded in reality. I wish I was able to put forth my own arguments as well as Destiny does, and I’ve become a huge fan. Fuck all the haters, Destiny, keep doing what you’re doing. That’s the end of my cool story. 😂👍🏻

Not only is that wrong, it's a whole level of cold, almost _un-human_ thing, I can think of.
TCt83067695 I think this is a really unfair way to phrase this whole thing. He’s not DESPERATELY clinging onto the need to say the Nword, he’s arguing whether or not it is morally wrong to express problematic languages in private. And by all accounts he’s right. There are arguments that this can bolster viewers and it was irresponsible to broadcast this view on a public platform as most people won’t understand the implication normalizing language in private does, but someone like destiny or anyone who has any social awareness should and could say whatever they want in private and not have it reach into their public life. He could’ve gone easier on trihex, but when your friend has gone to other bad faith political actors and is gaslight by their flawed arguments I can see why it would be hard to be charitable after that. Destiny is a cold person and he has be very open about that for a long time. And if you were curious, destiny and trihex were on good terms nowadays. The truth is destiny would’ve had to betray his worldview and essentially lie to himself and his friend. But hey that’s just my take
@@TCt83067695 so what’s the solution? Lie to him?? You’re not going to change how you feel, that’s not how that works. Excellent breakdown and analysis of this whole ordeal. In my opinion, this video is a fair and objective recap (with a few debatable exceptions). I'm not ashamed to say that I've watched all associated videos in their entirety, and this recap indeed captures the essence of what occurred. @Destiny -- I have to say that, following this whole "edgy comedy" drama, my personal opinion of you has changed substantially for the positive. It's not because you might say the N word in private. Frankly, that fact is irrelevant to me. What _really_ forced me to change my opinion about you was the fact that you're willing to _relentlessly_ defend your underlying principles from which your arguments and choices are derived. That's a powerful thing. For me, this "edgy comedy" ordeal proves, beyond any reasonable doubt, that you are an honest actor with sincere convictions. And please, don't take this the wrong way--but, until now, I wasn't sold on your character/integrity. I wasn't sure that _you_ believed what you were saying. Now, I am very confident that you _do_ mean what you say--and, if you're curious, I can tell you that the most compelling discussion in which I was "sold" on your authenticity was your discussion with your DT podcast cohost (I'm spacing on his name, my bad). It's often easy to resist pressure from those you don't give a shit about, but it's an entirely different thing when it's someone you're fond of. This was your friend, and you were more than prepared to sacrifice the friendship before sacrificing your principles--and you told that to his face. Hasan would frame that discussion as _"Destiny would rather abandon his friend than simply give up saying the N word,"_ but that's really *not* what this is all about. I recognize that. I'm confident that others will recognize that, as well. Keep up the good work.

Also, that Mike from PA was correct in saying there is a distinction between the government not allowing protests by the Hong Kong people and Steven trying to compare that to the Google employee being fired for making an internal memo the leftist company didn't like. Steven trying to compare that to a citizenship protesting their GOVERNMENT is a joke.
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 How did that clip crush him? It's a very simple public-private relationship. Think about it. Is it safe to declare you're an antifa extremist at a trump rally? You do it better than many. Keep it up, dude. Cheers.
Maybe this isn't the right place to discuss it, but the violent video games and agression thing is somewhat complicated. While violence in games is linked to increased aggression, that aggression is fairly short-term in people who demonstrate normal levels of aggression. The effects seem to last longer for people who are already highly aggressive. Additionally, while more recent studies have done much better at controlling for these factors, a game's difficulty and a player losing in the game have also been isolated as factors for increasing aggression. For Destiny's purposes within that debate, these details change nothing, but I thought I'd offer some clarification for those who weren't aware of some of the finer details. I don't claim to be an authority on the issue, so I'm open to corrections.
Trihex pulling a complete 180 on this is really the worst part, and should be highlighted most. I believe the man was hurt, and I have sympathy for him, but it's incredibly irresponsible for him to behave the way he has about it.
Absolutely true. I really do believe it was people like Mike and Hasan that kept fucking him over. You could see it play out live in almost every episode of the DT podcast. Trihex spurts out a cringe talking point, Destiny smacks it down, Trihex says he needs to do more "homework" and comes back next week with more talking points from them. People say this removes agency from Trihex, but it was so obvious man lol.
I think I was most disappointed by the Serfs in this debate. He came off as really cringey and dishonest here. I've watched them for a while and I assumed they were generally good faith but now I'm really starting to question it.
i was at a kendrick lamar concert and i saw these black dudes getting lit with a white dude they probably diddnt know and they were waiting for him to say the n word and when he did everyone celebrated. one of the greatest scenes i will ever witness in my life.
I'm really grateful for people like Destiny and Contrapoints who are willing to unpack everything, even if it means calling out the bullshit of our friends, even if it means uncomfortable conversations. For the left to remain strong as a movement we need the hard truth-tellers to bring internal criticism to the floor. If leftist culture persists where outrage wins out every time then we'll crumble into a culture of silence, fear of asking questions, and gradually the average leftist has no idea why they believe the things they believe, they just know they have to. And then the far-right swoops in for a new recruitment drive using virtues of free expression, free speech (and btw how about them immigran- oh ok not yet? maybe later.) But at the end of the day the problems with the right are fundamental. The problems with the left are poor discourse and succumbing to the most outraged denominator. Destiny isn't going to renounce his philosophical attitudes about how we treat people and our economy because some leftists are insufferable. In the end we need representatives like Destiny to remind people you don't have to be a Hasan or a Kormantine to be on the left. You don't have to be a boring dumbass.
This is not sad at all.. this is real AF and is basically saying that you need to be real to yourself and face yourself. Most people don't even take a few seconds to think about who they really are.. most people are way more concerned with their reputation than their character.

Coming at this months later not knowing shit until i binged the drama. Seems like Destiny is arguing about edgy humor in general and the cases when it can and cannot be used. Everyone else meanwhile agrees that context means sometimes that humor is allowed, and when that is the case is unclear and differs between groups. What Destiny fails to grasp is that these people don’t have a problem with his vague philosophy on N word usage, they care specifically about Destiny using the N word. Destiny is a left leaning figure so saying he uses the N word frequently allows racists to use it and then point to Destiny’s arguments as absolving them. Destiny says the fact he keeps how he uses it a secret is what matters here, but its actually makes it worse. If Destiny clarified every use of the N word he did then it wouldnt be easy to use by others as an excuse, but by keeping it vague he is writing a blank check for others to quote his vague arguments.

Yes the people he called out needed to be called out for their inconsistencies.
But imagine losing a dear friend because you as a white man desperately wants to be able to say the n word.
If you have a solid worldview that leads to logical conclusions, your options are very limited in this situation. Either change yourself and your foundational principles entirely, or bite the bullet like destiny did and disagree with your friend.
Honestly, I don’t expect to agree with every friend I have 100%. Sure, this is a little more divisive than the average discussion but trihex acted like a child, especially when you look back only 2 weeks and see he supported destiny on the exact same view.

It's a very simple public-private relationship. Think about it. Is it safe to declare you're an antifa extremist at a trump rally? No. Is it safe to be one at home privately? Yes. Damn I cant believe this was spoiled for me.I already watched the whole thing on some other dude uploading ur VOD, and I thought it was you.

And then the far-right swoops in for a new recruitment drive using virtues of free expression, free speech (and btw how about them immigran- oh ok not yet? maybe later.)
But at the end of the day the problems with the right are fundamental.

I think that destiny has well thought out arguments and you can tell by how he talks that he typically cares or is serious. You seem like you're a fan of theirs and you don't like debates because it makes them look bad, but debates are important. It's a platform to give your opinions and see how they hold up against confrontation. Hiding in an echo chamber is likely indicative that your beliefs are as brittle as glass and you're afraid that they'll shatter when confronted.
