I very much appreciate and respect the fact that Luke knows the difference between first looks/previews and reviews. All too often I see people opening boxes and giving so called reviews on things they just opened.
Nice pre review, price its self is on point, as with majority of all camping cear the smaller and lighter you go the more it will empty your wallet, that yellow though holy fig tree thats bright and you had it in the shade too, well any who my self i have the REI Alpine Bivy, thing when i bought it about 12 years or so ago i belive the price was around 200-300$ well worth the money in my honest opinion.
I'm with pmac124 on bivy's. I just don't like them. I'm a big kid and a bivy makes me fell like I'm in a coffin. I like to move around, unrestricted by anything so I'm going to stick with my wool blanket, a tarp or tent. But it does look like a good piece of equipment that bivy people should enjoy. Good preview :)
Wow! $270 is crazy for a bivy! I would rather get a Big Agnes for a couple more ounces and have the convenience of a tent. I guess it would make sense for mountaineers though as you mentioned. Thanks for the video Luke!
Luke how does this compare to the USMC bivy ? Nice video , I would watch a seam seal video ,if you made it . I'm not gonna tell you to make one that would be very rude .
No, you might be thinking about the First Light tent..that requires seam sealing because the seams are not taped. The Eldorado, Awahnee, I-Tent, etc. are seam taped and waterproof as is... The instructions say seam sealing the outer is their recommendation just for extra bomber protection on these tents.
Not a big deal if you film the seam sealing video, but I would like to know how much weight that would add. I have a mss bivy and love it. Not sure if the 5oz would be worth the purchase. I only use the bivy in the winter and really don't do a lot of longer distance hiking. Thanks for the video. (EDIT never mind after I heard the price.)
Never saw the appeal of bivys, I'd rather have a shelter I can move around in. Just in case it rains and I need to cook, also safety. Great vid though!
bivys are lighter than most tents, they are very discreet if you do stealth camping (not this yellow one), they can be use on every type of ground (like a freestanding tent), they can be use inside a tent when it's very cold or if there is a risk for your sleeping bag to get wet (like in a snow-cave or igloo). I have a freestanding tent and a very good bivy. I take the bivy with the tent in cold weather and I slept in it without a tent for one month in warmer season.
If you're watching this video in 2024, this particular item is discontinued. Instead, look at the Bipod Bivy by Black Diamond. Its pretty much this bivy, only greatly improved. I own it; it's great for emergency bivouac in the mountains.
This thing is hilarious! I literally laughed out loud at 3:28 watching you talk through this thing. I can't see myself in one of these things, way too claustrophobic for me. I just think for a pound more I would rather have a 2P tent with a great deal more room (e.g., Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2) and is already seam sealed. Great video as always, Luke!
How would you compare it to the Outdoor Research Advanced Bivvy? I know you briefly looked at it and that's the Bivvy I currently own and love. Is the material comparable to the Gore-Tex?
The Black Diamond Bipod Bivy has a standard tentpole-sized removable minipole instead of the wire. Its also seam-sealed. Its nearly exactly this bivy seen here, only improved. Has a bit of side zip as well, much easier to enter.
this bivy has been around longer than 10 years..i used to want one in like 2003 and before thatit was mfg under Bibler .. now there are better options IMO.. i.e. borah gear eVent bivy or MLD bivy or the OR helium bivy.
I use an Exped bivvy made of a PU bottom and an e-Vent top. Somewhat lighter at 600gr and by the looks of it, about just as spacious... 2.4m long, 95cm at the shoulders and 80cm at the feet. Packs away at 20x11cm... This Black D. looks solid, but why would they sell you a bag and not make it waterproof themselves? That's just rude... Especially at the price they charge. Anyway, love your channel, always a feel-good moment to watch you do your thing!
I can't understand the price when my surplus military one was 40$. 230$ extra for a bug mesh I could probably make one for 5$. I'm a cheap arse though haha
I agree with you though. For $270 you could find a Big Agnes tent or something similar for just a couple ounces more and have all the convenience of a tent! But I suppose it makes sense for mountaineers and the like
Waterproof? Not without seam sealing. You might as well have a $270 wet blanket. Much interested in seeing you seal as I have just made a big mess of things when I have tried it. The only sealer I find is water-based, and that junk runs all over the place. Why would anybody buy that thing when you can get a military Goretex one for less than 1/2 the price? For that price the thing should be taped, sealed, stapled, clipped, glued, and zip-tied everywhere. It should float like a kayak or take you into the sky if you fill it with helium. For that price you should be able to make a submarine out of it without it leaking a drop. $270? Did I hear that right? That's a car payment. They are nuts.
They have the Bipod Bivy now which is essentially the same thing but improved. It has a tentpole instead of a wire to lift the material off your face. I own it. Its great as an emergency shelter for winter hiking in the mountains.
I very much appreciate and respect the fact that Luke knows the difference between first looks/previews and reviews. All too often I see people opening boxes and giving so called reviews on things they just opened.
Yes please seam seal video! I remember your last vid on seam sealing a tarp. Great looking Bivy
I was waiting for you to stand up with the bivy on and dance while singing , "it's peanut butter jelly time!"🍌
hahahahahahahaha
Yes! Would love to see a video about how to seam seal it. Thanks, Luke! Your videos are awesome :)
A tie down point is a must for me. Otherwise, keep a large rock handy when answering a midnight call of nature on a windy ridge.
A seam seal video would be helpful. Thanks !
At that lofty price point it should be factory seam sealed.
seam seal video please mate ?
I would like to see the seam seal video
I am in favor of a seam seal video.
so I am
:)
Dittto!!!
Me too
Jup!

showing a way to seam seal would be beneficial for certain
Hi Luke, I would appreciate a video showing you sealing the seams of the bivy.
Thanks, Paul
Maybe you can put in an air mattress and partially blow it up so that the bivy is stretched enough to expose the seams that need to be sealed
Would like to see how you seam seal the bivvi please.
Excellent video Luke!
Wow! $270 is crazy for a bivy! I would rather get a Big Agnes for a couple more ounces and have the convenience of a tent. I guess it would make sense for mountaineers though as you mentioned. Thanks for the video Luke!
Yep, would appreciate the seam seal vid..Cheers
HI ! LUKE
YES I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HOW TO SEEM SEAL THE BIVY. PLEASE!
Would this be ok if you're a little claustrophobic?
Luke how does this compare to the USMC bivy ? Nice video , I would watch a seam seal video ,if you made it . I'm not gonna tell you to make one that would be very rude .
just a heads-up about the USMC bivy: it only works for people up to 6' tall. I found out the hard way. Most reviews don't mention it.
Thanks , not a problem I have , being too tall . I am 5' . But they do make a tall version of the USMC bivy .
yeah please do a video of the seam sealing
You got it, I should get around to doing that next week now that the weather has improved. - Luke
The BD taped tent seams are waterproof without seam sealing. They just recommend seam seal for extra protection.
They are not waterproof without the seam sealing; taped seams will help but they will leak. - Luke

luke is right i own 2 bd shelters including this biv and the eld. and they both have to be seam sealed. bd includes the sealer with the package
I'd like to see the seam seal vid.
Would like to see how you seam seal it, for sure!
It looks rather large when packed up. Could it pack down into a smaller bag or is the wire limiting the pack size?
please show how you seem seal it
Sure thing. Coming up soon. - Luke
My mss was 90 bucks ... Nanner Nannet Nanner. Yes the weight .
Not a big deal if you film the seam sealing video, but I would like to know how much weight that would add. I have a mss bivy and love it. Not sure if the 5oz would be worth the purchase. Interested in the seam seal video, would you use this alone or with a sleeping bag?
Never saw the appeal of bivys, I'd rather have a shelter I can move around in. Just in case it rains and I need to cook, also safety. Great vid though!

Good review. Thanks!
weather looks good there 4 that 👍
show the seam seal good to learn any trick you may have... thanks
I've been experimenting with a way to fill it so that it can be seam sealed easily and I think I have found a good method. Coming soon. - Luke
Seam seal video would be great!
This thing is hilarious! I literally laughed out loud at 3:28 watching you talk through this thing. I can't see myself in one of these things, way too claustrophobic for me. yes brother Luke make a seam seal vid, thanks.
A seam seal video would be cool, Thanks
Anyone know what size/type of wire is in this thing?
The Black Diamond Bipod Bivy has a standard tentpole-sized removable minipole instead of the wire. Its also seam-sealed. Its nearly exactly this bivy seen here, only improved. Has a bit of side zip as well, much easier to enter.
lets see the seam sealing!

cool switch up with the music
Seam seal video please!

Perfect next video. I was wondering.
Looks pretty durable thanks for the share ✌🏽️🙌🏽
would like to see the seamseal video. nice bivy and keep up the good info vids!
Great video friend
The fastest and easy way to seam seal it turn it inside out and spray the seams with Flex Seal
does it come in camo??
Nope.
Yellow and Green, that's it brother. - Luke
If you are searching for a nice camo hooped bivvy I recommend you the Dutch Army one.
You have to do a camp adventure where you use a Bivy Instead of a tent
morning brother Luke.
Good Morning Joseph! How are you doing buddy? - Luke
you should try your bivys with a coolmax cocoon between the bivy and the sleeping bag. It makes a huge difference reducing condensation.
I can't understand the price when my surplus military one was 40$. 230$ extra for a bug mesh I could probably make one for 5$. I'm a cheap arse though haha

$270 without factory seam sealing??? The Snugpak SF Bivvi sorts that problem out. Plus, it has a centre zipper... for less then $100
Look at that. Free standing too!
Awesome!!
At almost 2 pounds, I think you can go with more spacious tents.
Waterproof? Not without seam sealing. You might as well have a $270 wet blanket. Much interested in seeing you seal as I have just made a big mess of things when I have tried it. Seam seal the thing in the back of "MOOSE"
@3:21 its become self aware!!!!! ;)
Why would a bag that protect you from the elements need a bag put it in
"It can always be BIGGER" ...lol that is what she ... ah never mind.
No such thing as a "Ta'hon of space"
bear burrito
un fortunatly this bivy isn`t available anymore
They have the Bipod Bivy now which is essentially the same thing but improved. It has a tentpole instead of a wire to lift the material off your face. I own it. Its great as an emergency shelter for winter hiking in the mountains.
looks like a body bag lol
