Making a Cherry Blossom Aquaterrarium

  • Spring in Japan is known for the blooming of cherry blossoms. Cherry blossom viewing, or hanami, is a traditional Japanese celebration of this beautiful sight.
The blooming period is only for a very short one to two weeks.
Because of the short blooming period, cherry blossoms are thought to be symbolic of the concept that “nothing is permanent”.

      Jade Baxter
I figured the stuff from this video
clearish glue stuff (sometimes looks black when on foam) is silicone, the netting is mosquito netting, regular prices of black foam, masking tape.

I know that’s not all the ingredients but it is some of them

The rocks look like ohko stone or seiryu stone.
The dirt-like mixture looks like LECA and peat moss or coir? and the third ingredient is undoubted long fiber sphagnum moss.
I can't say for sure beyond that, but most of the ingredients are common in the aquarium and vivarium hobbies, especially aquariums.

if you try this, search for a silicone that does not contain fungicide otherwise it will kill your plants (especially moss)

    • @JamesThomas-qd7hp
      @JamesThomas-qd7hp 4 года назад +51

i think that most of the moss will survive. The cherry blossom itself (i think) should be removed because there isn't much space for the roots to grow around as well as the lack of soil around it. I may be wrong because they cut the clip after putting the cherry blossom in, but it looks like they pulled it out of a kokedama which itself has media within it but has to be showered/submerged periodically. if the plant is getting water, it should be able to survive. living long might be a different story. the plant itself wants to grow larger, but if restricted can be maintained and kept small. the roots can also be trimmed periodically (a technique done in Bonsai). i would assume the build is temporary, lasting maybe two or three years at most before it needs an overhaul. I could be wrong, and if i am, please don't hesitate to say so!

The only thing is that to really thrive bonsai need to live outdoors like real trees. Check out Heron Bonsai here on RUclips. Peter Chan is no nonsense and very beginner friendly! He even has videos on bonsai for free (things you can harvest from your own yard or kind neighbors). I'd never seen anyone take holly sprouts, from bird droppings, or oak saplings and turn them into bonsai but they were great!

But i don't know if its working or healthy for the plants, moss.
Also you could try some normal brown clay powder from a reptile shop images.app.goo.gl/tj8ppk9MDExUFMN58
Or "Hypertufa" (i don't know the englisch translation) its a mixture between portland cement (3parts), turf moss or cocos substrate (4parts) and perlite (5parts) images.app.goo.gl/PYGwUJQi8GAuTHMx9

I think the sakura should've been smaller and MUCH higher up, the composition looks kind of uncomfortable. The sakura is way too big for this. It's a cool experiment but sakuras don't go so well with aquariums, it would take a very specific composition for it to work well. Cool video though, the setup was cool otherwise.

I don't like this one as much as other's he has made. Don't get me wrong it's a wonderful piece but not my preference. With the bonsai I would have liked to see a wider tank. I also found it unusual that he didn't make the area where the bonsai was removable so it makes re-potting/root care easier. I wish he'd make one of these with fish. That would be stunning. I've been thinking of trying to make something like this myself but on a bigger scale and with fish.
