Keep up the amazing work and you'll be recognized one day by even the mainstream media out there.
Been really enjoying your videos. Will take issue with one thing here. Surely, shooting above league average on a massive volume of very long 3's, is actually a really encouraging sign. I don't really buy the idea that he's shooting from there because he can't take 2 steps forward without getting his shot blocked . He shoots from there to force the defence to step up to him on every possession. Also, shooting 35% from 3, in his rookie and college season, at high volume, is great. It'd be great even if he wasn't jacking up half of those shots from 30 feet. But considering that the half of those shots are very deep 3's, I don't see how you could infer that he's not a good shooter from those numbers. He's taking 6 attempts per game as the primary scorer on a bad team. He's not shooting 35% on 1.2 corner shots. He only needs to improve a tiny amount in terms of accuracy and shot selection and he could be an absolute nightmare. I'm worried that he'll never be effective going to the basket. I'm worried he'll always be a liability on defence. But the shooting concerns seem overblown at this point.
It seems like he went into the video wanting to make the point that Trae's size was an issue, and twisted a lot of supporting evidence to do so. For example, he makes the claim that Trae's inconsistent passing and deep 3s are a result of him being undersized, but does not give any evidence to back those claims up.
If there is anything consistent its that Trae is going to be a deep threat shooter in the next decade given more time to hone in on his very elite shooting talent. And he is using it to try force defenders to get to him and at the same time create more spacing. Currently John Collins is looking to be the future benefactor as he is already pretty good finishing off lobs, attacking the rim and improving his jumpshot. We'll have to wait and see if Trae gets more star quality teammates to work off his spacing and gravity.
What he's trying to say is that he's only shooting a little above league average from that deep, when it would only take a second to take a single dribble in for a better more efficient shot. They aren't actual concerns for his shooting, but his basketball IQ and taking more intelligent shots
You can see how excited he gets every time he throws a lob to Collins. Notice how as Collins slams it in, Young does a little hop of his own @ 0:571:07 and 1:12

Re Trae's propensity to take really deep 3s: Have you read Tom Haberstroh's recent piece about how deep 3s have been more likely to lead to an offensive rebound? One of the craziest nuggets to me was that since 2012 teams have rebounded over 50% of 3s taken from 34-35 feet. Do you think there's anything to that trend and could it make taking deeper 3s worthwhile even if it hurts your percentage?

He’s definitely a better playmaker than curry, curry is really good but he likes to do risky flashy passes were trae just likes to get the job done. things that trae has to do to get better is, work on his handle, offensive consistency, shot selection and stop chasing steph curry but rather worrying about being the best trae young he could be, that could be for better or worse it all depends on how bad trae wants it and I’m not the type of player to put a ceiling on shorter players. Tre got that Manu(hair) phase going on early.
Trae is fine he’s a hell of a rookie and it only gets better from here, he always has some of the best court vision in the league and when I saw him play his playmaking stood out the most to me it’s so elite not too many player jump out the gun passing like that and it’s been pretty overlooked by him. Trae isn’t athletic but he has very high offensive iq he just has to keep working on his game there’s been way too many undersized players that dominated their position at one point to bring that up
Looking at this video 2 years later when Trae Young is an all star starter and one of the best points Gaurds in the league 😂
Everything he said is true, what are you trying to say?
Did you attend the MIT Sloan Analytics Conference?
Yes! Did you?
Thinking Basketball Oh man, I wish I could have but I honestly didn’t even know about it before Nate Duncan mentioned it on his pod. Now I’m sitting here re-watching the panels on RUclips (and shaking my head at Daryl Morey‘s takes on soccer)😂 Did you appear on any panels or were you just there as a spectator?
No panels - maybe one day!
Thinking Basketball That’s unfortunate. Don’t know if that’s in your plans but I’d actually really love it if you talked about your MIT Sloan experiences on the podcast.
I think you should have highlighted that he may think throwing up deep 3 makes more room for his passing off the drive... which it does
