THIS is something I've been asking for YEARS. Back when I was 13, I sent a compromizing image to a real life "friend" because I was pressured into doing so. I deleted my Discord account expecting everything I wrote and posted to be deleted and scraped off their database/CDN... But, to my surprise, it wasn't. My "friend" still had the link to that compromised image (this was years before links expired) and there was quite literally nothing I could do to delete that image. I lived in fucking torment for a few years because he, along with other people, would constantly threaten me with sending the link to that image to other people in my IRL circles. It was hell on earth. I tried everything from Support to asking around and nobody could help me with removing that image as "Deleted Users can't have any more data removed from them".
It's completely fucking unacceptable that Discord gets away with just "anonimizing" messages. Actual bullshit. My condoleances to anybody who has ever been affected by this. My sincerest middle finger to discord.

I feel like there should be a law that requires companies to expose a seperate button cluster in their UI that allows synchronous deleting of your data, no 14 day wait period, no "when we get around to it", it should be able to insta-delete your account, all your messages, and your media as fast as the server API allows. I don't care if it causes outages, fail-safe is better than reliably dangerous.

@@supercellex4D Well at least remove it from view as quickly as possible. Actually deleting the data from the servers can take a bit for multiple reasons, for one some places have laws requiring data be kept for so long after deletion, 2nd deleting a lot of data at once can put a very high load on the database & storage servers, 3rd even once your data is deleted from the live servers, most all services are always making backups & it could be a while till all those backups are cleared. What most of these companies do is when you delete something it's just putting a flag on it in the database that it's been deleted so it doesn't show for other users, then over time whenever they both legally & physically can, the data is removed.

GDPR only applies to PII that they collect, GDPRs data request isn't a right it's a request. If they believe they need the data (for a necessary length of time), they can keep it. Discord messages do not always fall under GDPR. This is important because this usually translates to: if discord looks through all your messages, they can find the 1 message that falls outside of GDPR and deny your request - other companies have done this - Instead of refusing that part, they refuse the entire request.

I mean they could keep it in there Logs as an deleted Message for Police etc. but give the Users the Possibility to delete there Messages on an Server that they got no change of deleting it them self. Even the online forum from the discord support is not doing anything to help you.

It was annoying to me as well.
I remember when I created my own server, I used channels to exchange private messages (one channel per person).
And used a moderator bot along with my scripts to delete all messages in that channel when needed. When someone needed to message me in private, I would invite them to the server, create an exclusive channel, and shared the command with them to delete the chat history (so either of us could delete all messages when needed).
This is no longer necessary, as Telegram provides this functionality and more.

The way i know it stays is because i was an underage kid on discord that got their account banned and i share a server with that account on my alt and EVERYTHING is still there and there is no way you can get rid of it all, it would be the same for dms too and every other server.

Protecting yourself is first and foremost your own responsibility. Dont send compromising images of yourself to people you dont know, dont share account information, dont share locations. You should assume everyone you meet has ill intentions until they prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are fine. And if you're underage you shouldn't even be on discord honestly but that wont stop anyone.

But I ultimately believe that the only reason why discord is being allowed this is because of the governments (mainly in the US) had not bothered stopping them. Just to take the other side for a second, why is it discord’s job to fix a problem you created? Discord and literally every other online site that has the capability of sending messages to others ALWAYS tell you to NEVER send your personal information over them. It’s internet safety 101. Those things you want deleted should never have been sent to begin with. Just because you trust the person you’re messaging doesn’t mean you shouldn’t listen to discord when they say not to do it. It’s like a teacher telling you not to run in the halls at school, you decide to do it anyway, then you hit your head against a wall and complain to the teacher that they need to put giant foam pads against the walls so it won’t happen again. The person who is best at protecting your privacy is yourself. If you yourself wave away that privacy, that’s on you.

Because nobody wants to stop and think of the consequences of their actions before they do them. Its always "do now, worry later".
Somehow we've forgotten the significance of the things we put online potentially being there forever. I don't think this means Discord should do nothing at all, but if people don't stop sending personal details online, anything Discord does won't matter because the abusers will just save the incriminating info some other way.

Uh, question. Doesn't this also allow criminals to destroy evidence?
