Let us appreciate that there is stock video footage of two masked lab technicians twiddling their fingers maniacally behind a containment unit window. I mean, why would anyone (other than HAI) ever need something like that? Who thinks up these stock footage concepts?
I assume it's used by anti-science RUclipsrs. Which it turns out it actually a highly profitable venture.
Yeah that one stuck me as odd too.
Stock footage is a wild industry. Just film or photograph yourself doing anything and you can sell it to a stock footage house. I've sold a few that you would think nobody has any use for but I've made enough money to buy beers from it before 🤷🏻♂️
You know nothing, there are so much of wtf ridiculous stock footage. Google for "Crazy funny man eating and drinking on the toilet in bathroom" for example.
I don't think it's odd. It seems straight from a B-grade medical thriller/horror movie.
That last bit was important.
You need to order microbes, especially pathogens, through a lab, institute or university protocol. You can`t just buy stuff to use in your research, it has to be proper, with a written consent and some other items.
Also for the top tiers of infection agents, you`re supposed to provide proof of how each vial or batch was thoroughly used and dispatched. Live vials can`t just be lost. Also, word spreads fast if you work with pathogens, and you`re on a watchlist if deemed untrustworthy and subjected to body searches to prevent exfil events.
On top of that, there are places that, if an order seems suspicious, will ask the provided institution for confirmation of the order, and if it`s a fake order from impersonators, the shipment will contain a shitty dead yeast to make sure the live pathogens wouldn`t be successfully used in malicious events because shipping fake stuff is better than not shipping anything at all.
It's difficult enough to order an innocuous chemical from a reputable chemical supply house without authenticating yourself as an institution. 😂
This video is the perfect marketing trick. First create an anxiety that anyone can buy the plague online and then cure it at the end of the video (Which was very interesting so no reason to skip)
@@bsadewitz Institute of Virology. I've seen this one before!
Maybe I assumed too much intelligence in youtube commenters but it was pretty much super obvious it was tongue in cheek that you couldnt amazon prime the plague
What if you revive the dead yeast and make it infectious and drug resistant what would happen then?
You know it is a good video when Amy takes one for the team.
WAIT I HAVEN'T WATCHED THE VIDEO YET WDYM??? 😭
Amy, how many government watchlists did this put you on for the rest of your life, and is Sam paying you enough for this? :P

I ordered a deadly disease at my house and it spreaded throughout the whole neighborhood. I now have to face two life sentences in prison.
nice
Ok
Luckily it won't be too long with the deadly disease
😋
This is a weird Plague Inc. Scenario
I love how the recent episodes feature some of the HAI staff. Really sets this channel apart and gives it personality
Staph?
The inclusion of "Amy" has taken this channel to new heights.
Yes the HAI videos feature HAI stuff
@@benjaminhoyt1421 It's probably just Sam's twisted way of telling us that he finally has a girlfriend. But I'm not even mad, it's amazing.
I've seen that stock footage of three men and a woman standing in front ofa flip chart so often that I don't think "There are 4 scientists" rather I think "There are 4 actors, wearing white coats, looking really awkward pretending to discuss something written on the flipchart"
exactly how i feel sbout this stock footage haha
2:35 ?
You should make a follow-up video about how one would go about legally shipping the bubonic plague. I'll confess to already knowing the basics myself (a good search term is "Infectious substance category A"), but people are often surprised by the kinds of things you can just ship through FedEx or UPS.
You can ship it through the USPS too. They also ship some live animals, from bees to scorpions to emu chicks to adult eagles. Even many drugs can be shipped. No alcohol though lol.
@EebstertheGreat Yeah wasn't Stompy the Emu shipped to Alveus?
Samples that can be shipped at room temperature would generally be shipped using FedEx or the like. Samples that need to be shipped at lower temperature would be shipped using other more specialist services, from my experience
And some poor seasonal worker with more labor abuses than an immigrant in NY in 1950 will be the one handling it. I once got chemically tear-gassed by something breaking in a container, and my boss being too much of a dick to care until they stepped in and nearly fainted.
"Ferb, I know what we're going to do today!"
Aren't you too young to order a bubonic plague?
Why yes. Yes I am.

As a microbiologist who purchased ATCC bacterial cultures (ATCC the American equivalent of NCTC) I loved seeing this!
Would love to see the script approval emails with the prepared meals sponsor addressing the bacteria collection he's developing.
I hope the Oxford Staph is handled well by the Oxford Staff.
imagine if you could just order this by giving Cambridge as the address then stand in the entrance with a lab coat to intercept the package
Places like that definitely thought that through, usually as hazmat couriers are the only ones that can carry etiological agents (and for those wondering, “biohazard” and “etiological” are treated as different by postal services: some biohazards can be mailed, but never an etiological) and any facility legally allowed to work with such deadly agents (BSL3 minimum) tends to have excellent physical security, including Ram-proof car stops and fencing
This has probably happened once
I love how we put VAT on bacterium, a tax that was original created for luxuries.
nowadays it's easier to list the things we don't put VAT on sadly
Ah yes, the luxury of *checks notes* QCing for lifesaving tests and researching for lifesaving interventions
Evil villains have it so easy these days, back in my day we had to steal the plagues in great heists but all they have to do is some minor identity theft
For Staphylococcus the last part is pronounced with a hard “k”. So it’d be pronounced: “staff-eh-low cock-us” not “staff-eh lo-oh-ko-is”. I only say this because I was personally corrected on this pronunciation by my microbiology professor. Several times. 😃
Love your videos!
it might be an infection only Big Bird can catch
Everyone I know pronounces Pseudomonas aeruginosa differently
Can you rewrite that in IPA? I can't figure out the fauxnetics.
@anglaismoyen how do you know the word phonetics without knowing how to spell it???
@Philip Hunt-Bull it's a portmanteau of faux and phonetics, I think

And... the whole video was about deadly bacteria shipped to your door. 😂
After watching Hai for a long time recently I feel like Amy deserves a gift basket and a huge thank you
I live in Colorado, where all the prairie dogs carry bubonic plague. I could scoop one off the road, throw it in a Ziploc bag, and ship it to you. I'm pretty sure it's as legal to ship as a frozen steak... unless the post office doesn't like shipping plague for some crazy reason.
I think you need to say what kind of meat is and if it's contaminated and what's use it is for.
So "plague infected meat" won't pass the controls.
Not to mention, you risk infection yourself and you don't want that
Half as Interesting’s outside correspondent Amy might be the greatest addition to this channel since its conception.
If you try and order from one of these facilities, they always check the "to" address first, and if you're not an established institute or university, you can count on the FBI showing up to your house
You truly can order anything online!
Where did Sam get stock footage of scientists putting their fingers together?! 😂

Apparently Ben helped out getting samples as well, as those are *definitely* his pants in some shots, like getting the shoe sample at 5:19.

I thought Sam lived in colorado, we have bubonic plague in our prairie dog populations
Curious that the entire video is about the UK biobank when the US has a similar on e, the ATCC. Although it's a non-profit rather than state run, it should still save you on shipping!
I'm having serious problems processing this comment. Like. There are in fact people that live in the UK. They don't save on shipping. There are also people that live in the 6 2/3 other continents of neither UK nor US. Many countries probably have something like this it's literally just an example.
What is the purpose of this comment. Why is the choice of that example "curious". What would've been achieved by using the ATCC. Just. I'd be really curious about the thought process behind this comment because I am honestly struggling to understand what it is trying to say.
@@justarandomgothamite5466 Speaking as a British person I would assume they mean if the American version, the ATCC, is cheaper and presumably more accessible to Americans it is therefore more accessible to more people (because America has a larger population) thus is more relevant generally?
Probably because of the historical factoids?
@@justarandomgothamite5466Because an american youtuber tried to purchase from them and had to lie about his location to get as far as he did? I wonder if they would even ship to a country with an equivalent company without a good reason.

We gotta get Amy on jet lagged
The lister institute was named for the astronaut Dave Lister who carried an outstanding number of diseases.
I love the new making Amy do dumb things meme.
It's easy to remember because of morphology. Staphylo- just means in a clump, and -coccus (plural cocci) means round shape.
Did anyone else see the "biohasard waste" at 5:32
Yes.
Yes, they really are starting their own collection😂
I’m convinced Sam just wants friends on the many watch lists he is on
Amy is becoming my favorite character in the HAI Cinematic universe, sorry ben you've been dethroned
There are similar websites where you can buy small amounts of controlled drugs like methamphetamine for the purposes of calibrating testing machines. The samples are tiny though, like under 1 milligram. I got as far as adding meth, PCP and heroin to my basket and clicking checkout but stopped there. I don't know if there are further security checks (probably).
3:50 "So uh, honey, you know I work with bacteria right...."
And
I'm not surprised you need some certification to get these nasty bugs considering the world we live in where people will use almost ANYTHING as a weapon. I could imagine if someone wanted to get revenge on someone or where hired to kill someone, they could just get some nasty disease and expose their target to it (which would probably be stupid as they'd most likely expose themselves to the pathogen as well)
Stuff like this is best left to professionals that know what they're doing and how to handle these nasty things.
We should let Amy do the narration for an episode.
Or at least be a guest on a season of Jet Lag!
0:20 is it just me, or did the video request we give it a thumbs down at 0:20?
i’m ordering this straight to my school
We did this bacteria collection thing in my biology class. My group went to the central boys bathroom. It was so disgusting and resistant to antibiotics that we were told not to open the Petri dish.

So that's where comic book super villains buy all of those viruses for their master plans.
If you live in and around Denver, getting bubonic plague is easy; just go near a prairie dog colony and see what happens.
Amy is the best lol she does everything

Welcome to the Snack Zone!

Just a lil fun fact, if you want to register a new species you need to deposit that type of bacteria in at least two of these collections around the world
