This was a fun and interesting video Eric, and educational as well. Love the gentle care you provide to those calves, and the cows as well. Thank you for going out of your way to make this special video.
Perfect Timing, I just starting showing my kids (4&6) your videos and how much hard work goes into getting the milk they drink. They love the videos but especially love the videos with the Calves.
I really enjoyed watching about your calves - also how you get the milk and clean up afterwards - I must say I am really impressed at how clean things are around the barn and in the kitchen area. Great job!!!
We feed some whole milk and top it off with milk replacer to the amount we need, mixed in a milk taxi. We used to use buckets, but just switched to 4qt bottles and a bottle washer for cleaning them to reduce labor. Feeding around 40 calves right now.
We went from feeding 2 litres 3 times a day to 3 litres 3 times per day and saw huge benefits for the calves. Also we only feeding using bottles because we want the calves suckling so that they produce a lot of saliva.
So excited, Eric!! I received my long sleeved tee and my hoodie today!! I love my 10th Generation Dairyman goodies. I bought them in burgundy. They are excellent quality and I love how soft they are. Now I can tell even more folks about your site!! Great job!!
This was my job aged 6 till I was 19. I loved every single minute! Very similar system; pas milk in bottle, then bucket, then water. We also had feed with Jelly babies and other sweeties in, I’d wash them in the parlour and eat them myself...!
When I saw this was about the bottle Calves I couldn't click fast enough. I would be in big trouble, playing with calves all day they are soo cute. You guys do amazing work. Thanks for sharing!
@@davidwhite8767 Billions of human babies, probably you as well, were/are bottle fed. Go take up that cause since you obviously know nothing about dairy farming.
I only feed my calves on bottle for about 3 days. Then they get switched over to the automatic feeding system which is like a bottle. You have a nice calf barn. Plenty of ventilation. Great video!
Look who it is. 😀😀 I've been following Eric about the same time I started following your family. It's been interesting to see some of the differences between dairy farms. Both of your farms are very hard working!
Really enjoy ur video’s !!!! Amazing how u guys do everything!!!! Man there’s a lot of work to b done every day at ur dairy farm WOW blown away seems like u never hav time for anything? Always doing something!!!! Awesome work !!!!
As always, loved the video. Nice seeing the young ones and progression. Again, I really appreciate your hard work and the way you care for your animals, it comes through on your videos.
Great video on calf rearing mate . I bottle feed my calfs for 4 weeks then for 6 weeks on a teat bucket then for 2 weeks one feed a day with lots of calf cake. 😎👌👍
Eric... thanks for showing us non farmers what it daily takes to make the business run . It’s been really educational and fun to see your daily journey.Blessing s to you and your family. Wi .
Technically I think it is better to feed bottle, something about the groves in there throat, but it takes longer too, so depends on how many calved you got and how you value/manage your time
Thanks for the inspiration!! I want to be a farmer when I grow up. And this is great. I can't wait for the next video when I finish this one. Thanks Eric
We use replacer to feed our calves with bottles the whole way through. We find it’s easier to makes sure the calves get consistent meal sizes. We use 3 and 4 quart bottles depending on age. We also found that we can maintain proper feeding temperature while feeding calves in hutches. Let me know if you would like to know more.
In sweden we mainly feed the calves from, i dont know what to call it, nipple-buckets, maybe. Like a bucket with a nipple, like on your bottles, on the side. I guess it's the more natural way for the calf to drink milk, and the bucket is a bit more rational than the bottle, especially if you have some sort of milk taxi when you can just fill the bucket from the top instead of srewing the lid on the bottle on and off. I also noticed that you feed the calves a quite low amount of milk compared to what im used to, but you do get big, good looking, cows, so you must be doing something right.
A very rewarding job feeding calves, we do it similar to you do Erik and its nice to see how you feed your calves. They have a nice shine on there skin. They are thriving well and well looked after. Interesting video Erik.
It's good you talked about the calves. Also we like how y'all handle the livestock. Not yelling and whistling so much. They seem like good behavior around you and your team.
Thank You for making time to share your videos with viewers who never saw the inside a dairy farm. Please keep them coming " you could show mess-ups/poop accidents so everyone see's it's not a bed of rose's working with live animals " .
Our calves get a bucket with a teat the whole milk period. With a teat the calves drink small bits and they will digest it better and it keeps them from getting diarrhea. Greetings from a Dutch farmer :)
Ever thought about checking out a MILK TAXI? The NYFarm Girls farm use it for calves instead of your scoop and they say they've had great success with calf health.
Giving them the bottle, whole way untill they are off milk. It's supposed to be better because they drink slower and more spittle and enzyme mixes with the milk
Back in 1966-1975, feeding calves was part of my job too. We did not have bottles. We had pails with a nipple on them. We also would try to get them to drink out of the pail (without nipple) as soon as possible. If I remember correctly,.....they were usually drinking out of the pail (no nipple) within a few weeks.
In the old days we would keep the calf with the mother in separate pens from the rest of the milking cows. We did this because newly freshened cow's milk is not to be used for human consumption because of all the colestrum in the milk. After a week we would put the freshened cow back in the regular rotation and and bottle feed the calves. We had a small herd so managing the herd was not a big challenge. I really enjoy seeing the calves. I made my dad angry because I was always trying turn the calves into pets. Bull calves didn't hang around long because we would take them to the auction barn after several weeks. As usual, Eric, you produced a very enjoyable post.
I really admire how well you clean things. You’re very professional and take pride in your work and how you care for your animals. Keep up the awesome work!
You don't even realize that you are way more intelligent than your years. Your ethics and caring for your animals needs to be commended Eric. Stay safe and Merry Christmas from Cape Cod
We keep the calves with a big round drum that has about 20 teats. It’s a great job when they get older you can just throw in the 10 gallons in and leave them at it
We feed all calves on bottles. They say that buckets r faster but not as healthy because they are drinking too much at a time. When calves are young it’s better for them to drink slower. But buckets are a lot faster
Eric you never cease to amaze me your animals are well taken care of everything is washed and clean this is such a good operation thanks for the video 👍🇺🇸 .P. S. On my farm we did not raise cows lots and lots of chickens .
Your farm's future lives in the calf barn. Agree with you that feeding and care "can't be taken lightly." We had galvanized pails with a nipple and a hook on them. We could use the hook to hang the pail on the side of the pen, rather than to hand hold a bottle. The calf could suckle while we used the eating time to clean each calf's pen. Just another way to do the same thing that you do. One of the most successful farmers I knew did all the calf feeding himself. He wanted to know each calf was healthy and well cared for, it paid off in low mortality and great growth. That then translated into high production cows. You are of the same mind. Nice.
If my memory hasn’t completely failed me, I think we bottle fed raw milk for the first 3 or 4 weeks and then transitioned them milk replacer in buckets until they were weaned. This was 45 years ago though, and we sold the farm when I was 13 after my dad had back surgery and couldn’t farm anymore. I do remember one particular ornery calf. She liked to keep pulling the bottle closer and closer to the ground. I bent over and just followed her down when she decided to bring her head up fast. She broke my nose.

I miss feeding my babies, I always got them on a bucket as soon as I could, but as you said, a super important job to raise calves and sometimes its hard
I feed calves 1 + 1/4 bottles until about 4 weeks old, and about 1/3 of a bucket of milk to the older ones until they are about 2.5 to 3 months old (both the bottles and 1/3 of a bucket are the same amount of milk). They all get about 3/4" of calf-grower grain feed in one bucket, a full bucket of water, and a handful of hay. We feed them this twice a day.
Oh, Lord, that's an interesting question and it'd be interesting to see if he can answer but tough to see how. He's 10th generation - that's going back some. My mother's family were dairy farmers since 1600s here in America and as far back as can trace in England before that. I doubt there's anyway of knowing. But I'll love it if he is able to.

Chris,
That is such a great idea! Especially if y'all are in the city and your kids are at the perfect age for this info. 😀👍
If you attach milk bottle sleeves to you rail fencing, you just pop the milk bottles into the sleeves and the calf's feed themselves.
Excellent job on your calf housing, feeding and daily care. Raising tomorrow's assets today.
