  • TM-C3500 Blade Error.
This unit is one of many we have and has just recently come back from Epson from a full service to fix this and or head maintenance problem.
The unit is using genuine Epson paper but keeps on jamming on any length of run.
Maybe anybody out there can suggest why this issue keeps on occouring as we keep sending them back to Epson and for some reason they just jam!
Both the upper and lower blade are clean so it's not a adhesive build up issue, it's almost that you can hear the blade catching rather than slicing just before this jams.
Epson, I have uploaded this as no doubt when we contact you we will be told that we can't send you a video clip so pre-empted any objection so you can see what we are suffering

I found a fix that worked for me anyway. First off, allow me to also pounce the disgruntled train for Epson support. They were fast to reply to my online contact attempt however the rep was useless and only want me to send the unit in for eval. Despite attempting to get replacement aftermarket parts and perform the repair myself.
Anyway onto the issue. Our printer is only about 1.2 years old and only been in use for the last 3 months of the year we've own it. So warranty is expired, imagine that. Worse yet is we've only made about 600 labels at best. Label sizes range from 4x2 - 4x8 and in between. The cutting malfunction began about 100 cuts ago which was intermittent but frustrating as it's on a network so everyone would have to walk to the location to make sure the label actually printed because the error forces the user to cycle power which looses any other print jobs in the queue...
I digress. The bad cuts became more and more frequent. Im tech savvy so of course I'm immediately annoyed but curious what's going on.The actual fix was that I needed to scrape built up glue from the sheering edge under where the blade makes contact to the paper/label... I don't have photos but it will make sense if you pop the label cover open, you will see it. If your printer behaves like mine then the blade stays in the stuck position so you're able to make sense of what edge needs to be cleaned.
In my case, this adhesive/glue was transparent however scraped of well with a razor blade and there was way more than I'd expected from such few label jobs, IMO.I will leave my most of my opinions of Epson out but I will say this. After performing what is considered Preventative Maintenance that wasn't in the lengthy manual, the labeler hasn't malfunctioned since. Granted I've only cut 60 labels and only cleaned it just this week but the bad cuts when from 1 of 10 to 5 of 10 to 9 of 10 in a matter of weeks, (I;e, glue building up & solidifying).
My point for bringing this up is that there is no need to send the unit into Epson for service fees, shipping fees, down time etc. I was fortunate to find the fix and hope it maintains well. The reason I believe this malfunction occurs is that its essentially a safety feature. The blade is coming down and being obstructed by meeting a poor contact point causing it to fault or in other words, kill switch. I can only assume, (because Epson sure as heck doesn't educate me), that it's truly a safety type feature or at the least its a sensor that tells the motor to return to reset position and the blade to mechanically disengage.Happy to say I probably saved 40 bucks in shipping and 100 or more for a service call plus replacement parts etc for something that only needed to be cleaned. I would recommend maybe alcohol, goo-gone, acetone or something else to remove the built up adhesive if you're uncomfortable using a blade. I just had one on me so it was my nature to attack blade first. This is the longest YT post I've every made. I sure hope it helps someone else.

Hi James! We're having the same issue, also cleaned the blade from glue, but it's having the printing error 54 again. Did the fix work for you or you are experiencing the same issue still as well?

@@renegadeteaestate7528 since I cleaned the blade we havent had the issue again yet. Two of us primarily use the printer daily and we've continued the same volume of labels.
We joke about when it will happen again but so far so good.
If it does it again after the blade is cleaned then i personally would begin taking the head unit apart.
I know that sounds trouble some and time consuming but i refuse to pay for service fees that are likely to be half the cost of a new printer.
Do yours still make that same grinding noise or something else happens?

Hi James,,, did you experience the problem again or has yours resolved?

We have this issue (Error 54 and that ugly grinding noise) on EVERY cut when we use any PE media. Never had the issue when we use Epson Glossy 509mm continuous roll (33m long). I've cleaned the blade with HG sticker remover and doesn't improve the issue.
I think this relates to the gauge/thickness of the media; when I cut the PE with scissors there is more resistance, so it seems like a safety feature that's just a little bit too safe.

please let me know if you managed to resolve this issue as mine is doing the same thing! I thought it was a build up of glue

No, Epson are bloody useless, we have been so busy (otherwise I would have completely stripped it out) to work out the issue, if you remove the front panel and manually spin the tiny cog you can lower the upper blade which does get a gum build-up, that may cure the issue you have, we have switched to pre die punched peelable labels so they don't need to be cut with the cutter. Epson have failed with this product on support and issues with cleaning the upper blade, the problem we have is not a glue build-up for some reason the clutch cutting mechanism is set too low causing the machine to jam (IMO)

thank you for your prompt reply, I agree with you Epsom are lacking in after service. I love this machine when it works and hate it when it doesn't work as it's so difficult to get support resolving occasional issues. I'll try the cog spinning!

@@alisonderrick4491 if you have not dropped the upper blade down and cleaned it then that will probably be your problem, I will ask my manager to see if he can do a video on how to do it, we also refill the cartridges and reset the chips, saves us a FORTUNE in ink costs

I have the same problem. Seems it lasts me just over a year (out of warrantee) then I just have to buy a new one. If anyone has a suggestion for a better printer Im all ears! I do so many different labels that I just use the 4inch continuous.

good evening - did your manager have time to prepare a video showing the cleaning of the blade? I'm sure you're all very busy, but would appreciate knowing how to clean further. Ongoing jamming issues...............did you manage to resolve yours? @@@ciggyjuiceeliquids3108
