I never thought about it before, but he is a pretty good character. He knows he's just a chubby nerd, someone nobody would think twice about, and he tries to make something of that by infiltrating a place as its IT guy... takes everything with a chill attitude because careful study and planning only got him a tech degree and a boring job. why stress when you have a pretty easy task of stealing from a hugely incompetent, overblown theme park slash mad science lab? but then things go a tiny bit wrong here or there and we see liiiittle cracks in his calm.
The first scene with him in the movie leaves out one thing, in the book he was recording the conversation which is why he made sure to say Dodgson's name out loud he was planning on blackmailing him afterwards.
This channel always makes me wonder how many other incredible content creators there are on RUclips that I will never hear about because they’re sort of under the radar
I heard William Hootkins was the original choice for the role. Hootkins of course having played Jek Porkins in Star Wars, Major Eaton in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Lt. Eckhart in Batman '89.
I’m surprised why they haven’t included it in any other of the films. It has so much potential- but then I guess that’s why it’s appearance in the first film is so special. The sequels are mostly terrible anyway.
which would mean that frill is an intimidation display rather than a sexual one. I figured it was just more InGen splicing, he ended up a runt because they crammed his DNA full of frilled lizard. you notice he also lacks the crocodile-style notched jaw, instead having a simple lizardmouth.
@@KairuHakubi They tried to retcon their VERY inaccurate appearance using that as an excuse for the later films, but it always sounded like a weak excuse. 😂 Just like how they turned deinonychus into velociraprors, when the real raptors were closer to the size of a turkey.

There's a non-canonical Lego Jurrasic World cartoon series in which Dennis has a nephew, Danny Neidlemeyer. Dennis does eventually make an appearance as an old recorded video tape with clues to some sort of treasure he was looking for (did I say this was non-canonical?). Unfortunately, they didn't get Wayne Knight to reprise his role. There is also a Lego figure of Dennis, but it's only available in a really big set. I recommend checking it out. It's far superior to the movies it's a prequel to. And the "spitter" dinosaur has always been my favorite, too.
Nedry's motivation was better explained in the book. He was abused and blackmailed by Hammond to do his work, really heavy programing work, without all the details needed to do it. And then he was underpaid and blamed for the failures. He had several reasons to betray Hammond, not just greed. I never liked that part of Hammond-Nedry realtionship in the movie, it was like a lot was missing, until I read the book.
The scene with Denis and the Dilo is the most epic scene in the entire movie imo and more epic than the iconic t-rex intro with the two jeeps in the pouring rain.
I never understood why they focused in on the embryo canister getting buried in the mud, either. Same with Ned's first scene, where the camera focuses in on the shaving foam he scrapes off on his pie. I thought for sure they were setting up a Chekov's gun, but no...they were just really, really odd cinematography decisions. I can't help but feel like those were missed opportunities.
The canister buried in the mud was meant to emphasize that all of his scheming and planning was for nothing. I thought that was obvious. Also for people not to ask "Duh...where'd that canister go?"
Damn you're a great storyteller. I love the docs, I've watched all of them. I have a suggestion for a video, maybe something Steve Oedenkerk. I don't know if Kung Pow! is a cult classic, but the humor is not subtle at all. Haha. Keep up the stellar ideas!
I watched Jurassic Park a bunch as a kid, but what really made it have a special place in my heart was all the YTMNDs made about it. On top of that a dude at my school would take other kids' facebook photos and photoshop them into screencaps of Jurassic park. Seriously this movie was the beginning of a life of memes for me. Dennis, our lives are in your hands and you have butterfingers?
I like him too as a villain and he's very well played, I think Wayne Knight and Ariana Richards did the best acting jobs in this film. I also very much like the story of the Jurassic Park game, glad to see that it gets some love here.
I just watched this tonight. What a classic and the entire cast did well. As much as Wayne Knight’s character was conniving, I felt for his death, especially when he lost his glasses as I myself wear glasses. Another fantastic video.
I think Jurassic Park having interesting characters and a good script is really what has helped this film become so memorable and beloved over the years even more so than it's game-changing effects. Character and story are some of the most essential things that help make for a great movie. Hence why films like Avatar and or even the sequals to Jurassic may have great looking effects but aren't really talked about or revisted. Whereas this film is watched numerous times by people and still quoated to this very day.
I absolutely loved him in the movie. Call me crazy, but he was my 4th favorite person in JP. First one being Alan, 2nd one, Malcolm, 3rd one, Hammond. i wish he hadn't died in the movie
One thing I never really noticed until you kind of pointed it out is that Nedry was generally eloquent and had no trouble speaking. The one time he wasn't eloquent, he was up to no good. That out-of-character moment is something that probably should have tipped off the other staff that something was up, but they never seemed to catch on.
Jurassic Park the game for ps3 was so amazing! Pretty cool that it deals with the embryos and it takes us back to the same location in the movie where Denis met his demise from the Dilo. All these years later the Jeep is still there with Denis laying dead inside of it and it's a spinetingling moment when the dilo jumps out of it.
Does anyone else here think Hammond is the actual villain in Jurassic Park? He’s directly and indirectly responsible for a lot of the bad that happens in the film, such as screwing over Dennis Nedry, neglecting proper OSHA compliancy around the park which puts nearly everyone at risk and clearly being greedy and uninterested in the well being of others.
In the novel they expand on his motives, and as a grownup, I even feel a small sympathy. Mild Spoilers: Hammond/Ingen kept all the project in secrecy so kept Nedry working "blindly" (brilliant pun later on) and after some inevitable bugs, they ordered some out of contract additions and modifications to the software without paying him, and even threatening to badmouth him to other companies to keep him on a leash. No wonder he was so fed up. Also his plan was to return to the control room and restore the systems after he delivered the embryos. As a kid, I always though he wanted to ditch the island with the "guy in the boat" and leave everyone to die. His death in the novel is brutal!
i never saw him as all that bad compared to everyone around him. he is no good guy, but i never thought he was the main one to blame. hammond and wu were the main bad guys to me with nedry as a catalyst.
In the book Hammond was absolute villain and willingly knew the park wasn’t in good condition. Dennis’ motive is less money but more getting back at Hammond for mistreating him.
Hats Off Entertainment I heard that Wayne Knight really wanted to reprise his role for a sequel, the idea being because of his weight he was too big of a meal and was left alive but missing a hand, eye ETC.
Thank you! I love Jurassic Park for the characters--more so than the dinosaurs to be honest. And Nedry is my absolute favorite character. I think he's fascinating, fun to watch, and I liked his story. Although he caused so much death, chaos, and destruction (including his own), he also had an understandable motive for doing what he did, although it was wrong--betraying InGen for Biosyn for money. I just think the novel did a better job explaining Nedry's financial situation than the movie did but the movie was my first love... Thanks for making this video!
This movie was a defining part of my childhood. I went to LA a couple years ago to ride the original JP ride at Universal before they revamped it to Jurassic World. I can't express strongly enough how much it felt like being transported into my 8 year old self's imagination. Sad that it's gone now.
If ignorering that some game use that scene later, in the movie you never see him die. So in some time line he is still on the island and looking for that canister, or he just got on the boat, half eating up, but now relaxing on a beach, without arms and legs.
hanscombe72 I loved Nedry! He showcased some of the best early 90s technology. There is I think an early apple Newton/think-pad pda on his desk. It was awesome that he was talking to digitised video with harbour master through his own screen and headset. That cool move synchronising the timer on his Casio databank watch with the timer for the security cameras. The silicon graphics computers. In an age where it was brilliant to see real video on a desktop computer his tech was awesome. I even had a desktop theme disc that had quotes that matched events on windows 95. “Some of the minor systems might go on and off but it’s nothing to worry about it’s just a simple thing”. Rest In Peace Dennis.
Me too. The shot of him trying to wipe the blinding venom from his eyes with the lightning flashing in the background gave me nightmares when I was a kid
When Nedry said " dont go cheap on me Dodson", he was the one being both greedy and cheap. Also Nedry 's character was shown to be abliar too. He lied and complained about his financial problems to Hammond and nobody else did. Apparently he was the only one having a problem with the salary.
The dinosaur was actually created by Spielberg himself. It is not a real dinosaur, but he wanted something like a cobra that spits "acid". I think it was a BBC One Radio interview.
Dilophosaurus was a real dinosaur, the frill and venomous spit were added to make her stand out...she's also not fully grown so that she wouldn't be as big as the Raptors.
One of the best movie experiences of my life was seeing JP on IMAX 3D for the 20th anniversary; you couldn't tell that it wasn't made for that format at all (it looked better then a lot of modern 3d movies anyway).
3:00 to 3:15 you mention he has to get to the dock on time. A lot of people don't realise, Nedry isn't trying to escape. He's not turned everything off, and then fleeing, saying "f*ck you" to all the people he's abandoned. He's actually heading to the dock, to deliver the can of embryos to a boat worker... and was then going to go back to the control room and 'be a hero' so to speak, by getting everything up and running again. Nobody would have been wise to what he'd done with a can of embryos, he probably would have told everyone that it was a glitch with the system having to compile while it was running a debug program... and he'd have gotten rich through BioSyn... and would be the go-to guy to fix the park... all at the same time. He's a faulted villain. He does silly things, because he was dumped upon by Hammond, and ends up paying the ultimate price. --- This brings me to another point of the movie. Hammond constantly spouting "Spared no expense" He clearly has. In every aspect of the park. Fences that are inadequate if they lose power. Not properly paying the one and only person who can work the computers. The computer system being inadequate as well, as shown by Nedry when he talks about how much processing is needed to keep the park running... and the fact that the system also needs to shut down various safety aspects of the park, just so it can run other programs. No locks on the doors of the vehicles. Also the vehicles have accessible windows, even when they are going through the Dilophosaur Compound. This alone would be dozens, if not hundreds, of lawsuits PER DAY, if the park had ever opened to the public. Muldoon, "the main Raptor Guy"... not knowing anything about Raptors apart from what he'd learned in his couple months of being around them (his death scene proves this after Grant's set-up at the beginning). Muldoon had worked safari, sure... but knew nothing about Dinosaurs. A storm breaks out, so they abandon the island, leaving only a skeleton crew... WHILST THERE ARE VISITORS ON THE ISLAND. So basically they are winging the safety protocols as they go. The shotguns and weapons being underpowered, as proven when Grant shoots at a Raptor, and it makes what is basically a couple scratches in the glass in the control room. Also with safety procedures... the system gets shut off, turning off everything, including every single fence in the park... and the fuse box (lol) is situated at the opposite end of the complex. Meaning, if there ever was a power cut, someone would have to go out into the park, without any safety systems in place, to turn the power back on. Having the fuse box nearby, would eliminate risk. But no... planning the layout of the complex and control room, also had no expense thrown at it. Ellie throws this at Hammond in their ice-cream scene... "It's all an illusion!" The real antagonist is Hammond. In the book he was an asshole. In the movie, he's misguided and egotistical, disguised as a friendly, bearded old man with aspirations.
Personally, my favorite fact is that despite being fat and selfish, he was not lazy nor helpless in a crisis. He was dangerously capable and more unlucky than incompetent.
Joe, I could watch your videos all night. In fact, that's exactly what I'm doing!
In the novel Dennis Nedry’s death was more violent then in the movie.
I love your voice, your calmness, your videos.
I heard William Hootkins was the original choice for the role. Hootkins of course having played Jek Porkins in Star Wars, Major Eaton in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Lt. Eckhart in Batman '89.
Supposedly, the dilophosaurus in the film is a baby. A full grown dilophosaurus is 23 feet tall. I would love to see an adult.
@@WobblesandBean I believe the initial idea was deinonychus and they just said velociraptor SOUNDS better, so they went with it. Plus they wanted to be able to have humans in costumes. This does not bother me.
Another great video! Really loving your stuff dude
What I find funny is Hammonds catch phrase is "Spared no expense" but when it came to Nedry it seems he spared as much expense as he could.
Hammond was the *real* villain. He stiffed his employees.
Well that discrepancy largely seem to be because they changed Hammonds character from the book where he was a real scumbag, but kept the scenario largely intact as otherwise we wouldn't have much left of the plot.
We don't know what he was paid in the movie
He spent no expense in the official tours and aesthetics. Technical specs and security? Pfft. Typical miser.
Great videos, can't get enough
"Kind of an asshole" - 'Irreverent' feels like a better descriptor. Best character in the series imo.
I really did like his character as well. He played the part so well and I can’t see anyone else play it
Wayne Knight is a funny actor and it's possible other actors could've pulled off the role. John Goodman would've been a good choice. What's funny is when I first saw Billy Madison I thought it was Wayne Knight playing the role of principal Anderson and it does look like him but he was played by Josh Mostel.
Honestly a lot of the more memorable parts of Jurassic Park come from before shit even hits the fan, especially Nedry's scenes.
Nedry is not greedy, he just wants to be paid for the work he is forced to do for free because Hammond actually IS greedy and screwed him over.
I watched Jurassic park for the first time recently and I thought Hammond was the actual villain of the movie.
I gotta say, your channel is best thing RUclips has sent me in months. So happy the podcast is going well, and I can't wait to follow where your content goes. Keep it up!
Thanks for the support!
Last time i was this early, Jurassic Park was still a well written franchise
I'm so glad someone said it!
Great Goonies reference! I never would have realized it on my own. Great Job!
Ominous quoite: "When you control the mail, you control.. information"
“Dotson, Dotson..we’ve got Dotson here!! See, nobody cares” Lol one of my favorite lines from a movie
That laugh tho.. Also thank you for including the Butterfinger bit, probably my most often quoted line from the whole film.
I like him too as a villain and he's very well played, I think Wayne Knight and Ariana Richards did the best acting jobs in this film. I also very much like the story of the Jurassic Park game, glad to see that it gets some love here.
Totally agree. The sequels had no memorable characters. It's nice how well laid out these characters even though some have very little screen time.
Well, there was Peter Postlethwaite's character. I found his 'Peter, if you want me to run your little camping trip' speech very memorable.
I just started going through your stuff you got me busy. I want to watch it all. Good work
Thanks for watching!
Great video. Dennis Nedry was played perfectly by Wayne Knight.
There is so much more to the character than most people know. Look up Klayton Fioriti. He goes in-depth to a lot of Jurassic Park stuff.
Awesome awesome video. Jurassic Park it's a legendary film and I love how you focused it down to one character.
"Life finds a way" to show me how our Mr. Knight portrayed a greedy Dinosaur DNA grabber in the unique "Jurassic Park". Stay safe and keep it up!
Regardless of who he plays Wayne knight will always be Dennis Nedry to me.
It was more obvious in the book, where he is conveyed far more unsympathetically and is killed by his own dreams in the end.
He was great as Micro in Punisher War zone, but I fondly remember Jurassic Park in the cinema as a kid
Uh uh uh, you didn't say the magic word
Your vids are so great, keep up the good work.
I had that action figure and it was way too skinny; it looked NOTHING like Wayne Knight.
Absolutely brilliant video. I sometimes forget that Newman and nedry are played by the same actor- he does it so well.
i never saw him as all that bad compared to everyone around him. he is no good guy, but i never thought he was the main one to blame. hammond and wu were the main bad guys to me with nedry as a catalyst.
Wayne Knight has been a favorite of mine since he was on the Edge, on fox. Great show
Joe, could you make a mini documentary (almost) Cult of The Full Monty? It's a very good movie!!
Denis nedrys death in the book is gory, violent and masterful in Crichton's hands, you just cannot pull away from it.
Wow that connection with the goonies just blew my mind.
"We spared no expense." - John.

I loved Nedry!
When I was little this scene scared the shit out of me.. much more than the Trex one!!!
The cutaway leaves it to your imagination.
Me too. The shot of him trying to wipe the blinding venom from his eyes with the lightning flashing in the background gave me nightmares when I was a kid
I had that action figure, and the Jeep. His character is also why I always wanted one of those Silicon Graphics computers
Wayne Knight is a joy to watch in anything, I'd literally watch him eat cereal.
One of the best movie experiences of my life was seeing JP on IMAX 3D for the 20th anniversary; you couldn't tell that it wasn't made for that format at all (it looked better then a lot of modern 3d movies anyway).
This was Wayne Knight's greatest work
Dennis Nedry is alive
I think he's a favourite because everybody knows a Dennis Nedry xP
HELLOOOOO NEWMAN!!!
Dennis Nedry returns in the new movie, and we find out that he survived. If It accessed, It would be fantastic and brilliant. A surprise for everyone
Yes, he is alive!❤😊 Yeah😊! Yeah!😊 Dennis Nedry is aliveeeeeeeee
---
This brings me to another point of the movie.
Hammond constantly spouting "Spared no expense"
He clearly has.
"It's all an illusion!"
The real antagonist is Hammond.
In the book he was an asshole.
In the movie, he's misguided and egotistical, disguised as a friendly, bearded old man with aspirations.
He has one of the best laughs ever 😂 "I'm gonna run you over when I come back down." 🤣😅
Ah Ah Ah, you didn’t say the magic words!
I'm surprised that you didn't comment on the can of Jolt Cola in his hand during his reveal in the Control Room
