I was born in 1950 and lived the first six years in an Airstream. My dad bought it when he came back from the war and his family of 4 lived in it those six years as an Air Force family. We lived in El Rey trailer park near the Air Force base.
I remember watching this video at Eddy's Trailer sales in New Your in the very early 1970's. The video was shot for the 1969 model year (the new body style) and the 1969 Chevy used to set the world speed record of over 100 miles an hour for a standart passenger car towing a travel trailer had a big block (396). You can tell the trailers pictured are 1969/70 because the cabinet doors are not the tambor that started in 1971. They also have the spin-on water tank cap rather than the flap. Great!!!
That road test at the end was awesome! They forgot to mention that the old guy driving the car had 15 rum and cokes before accidentally driving off-road at the test track just to make sure it was safe for the times!
Get one! They're on ebay. If you want to get one that is a bit of a fixer upper you can do some remarkable things (you wont save a LOT of money doing it that way but you save some and have ton of fun in the process)
Actually, I was wrong as the tambor started in 1970 and not 1971. Still a great video. Anybody got the second one where they document the speed record? I remember watching that one with the video showing the car speedometer reading about 115 mph but the timing lights actally confirmed a little over 100 mph for the record.
Scott Anderson you ever see that movie "A Perfect World" with Kevin Costner and Clint Eastwood? There's an Airstream trailer being pulled by a 63 GMC pickup. real sharp set up. too bad it gets wrecked
Indeed. I'd seen that movie, although it's been a while since I'd seen it. So I cannot remember what was driven. All I remember is Clint Eastwood and Kevin Costner.
Under *no* circumstances should anyone cut corners when building something. You never know when someone's life might be at stake, and you want to be able to make it from point A to point B safely.
I took the plant tour in Jackson Center Ohio, there is actually a great deal of the original quality still in place. I know the people there still have a lot of commitment to their product. Went to the Houston RV show this last week. The sales men were whining about not having enough product to sell. The guy said he had sold his allotment out to July, so they ain't exactly making them like sausages!
While I like something that is light in weight, the less power needed to tow the trailer, the better, strength is also important. How much weight can a completed fuselage of an Airstream trailer hold before it buckles? If it buckles under the weight of a fully clothed 235lb adult, then it's no good.

Wonderful piece of history. Really captures the time period.

I love everything about an Airstream 😍

What an awesome video! Cool to look back on this history, especially since we are in the middle of renovating an airstream right now! 🙌
We have a 1962 Overlander & a 1984 excella rv. We love them both, never seen this video - Awesome
I love the narration "Can easily be lifted by this attractive but not obviously muscular young minx", lol!
Airstream trailers are a real piece of Americana
Cool information on the Airstream..
I love the old Airstreams-- but THAT was a FULL bath?? lol!
Fascinating! Thankyou!🚐🙋✌
13:50 Good lord.... "I forgot my bathing suit"
"It's okay, just strip down to your underwear."

its ahead of its time
great video
What a delightful video. Of its time but very interesting all the same. I just feek sorry for the guys with the fibreglass and no gloves lol
I've got a paladin (a rare English version)
My idea of a tow vehicle for an Airstream would be a 1966 Chevy C20. :)
Jason Carpp Amen. with a period correct Airstream
i tow my 1969 Airstream with my vintage 1969 Continental Mark III..... Stylin;...... sixties style!!!
Scott Anderson you ever see that movie "A Perfect World" with Kevin Costner and Clint Eastwood? There's an Airstream trailer being pulled by a 63 GMC pickup. real sharp set up. too bad it gets wrecked
Possibly. :)

Jason Carpp A very valid point.
How many of these construction techniques are still used in 2014?
Umm none...

16:22-18:29 I want that job
Who was the model in the bikini in the cold room?

Jason Carpp No that fat ass needs to go on a diet.
That would certainly help. But also shedding some clothes would help.
That trailer looked awesome, until they added the couch and colors.
What year was this?
i want one of those too
Timeless, classic and sexist! I miss the good old days.
yes they were wonderful-- IF you were the one who was sexist, rather the one on the receiving end....
Nothing sexist about this.
Building dreams.... or nightmares. My dream? Is a longer warranty. That 1 year warranty won't do.
FYI many Airstream dealers now offer Warranty for Life. No deductible either. Can use it at other AS dealers across the USA.
Men are amazing! We're like wild stallions!
Yes-- they both fart a lot
Que tesão estes AirStream como queria um mais no brasil impossível
Si mi amigo. Obrigado
Back when men were men and women were women.
At 60 MPH to took that POS Chevy a 1/2 mile to stop. LOL If was a Ford or a Dodge it would only have taken it a 1/4 mile or less .
Understand that many Airstreams have electric brakes. They work great when set up and maintained properly.
