I am a new rat owner, but this worked for me. if you're having problems with them peeing everywhere in their cage its because 1- they like to pee so they can smell if they have been in the place that they are in before. rats do not have good eye sight so the like to pee so they can figure out where they are. 2- they like to pee on smooth surfaces, I put a rock in my litter box and my rats started to only pee in their liter box. I think I saw a pee rock in your cage, so if its still not working for you try wetting he rock just a little, they will pee on it because they think it is a water source so they can find it again. they will eventually start peeing on it regularly after a couple of weeks. :)
I really appreciate the comment :) I have a pee rock in the litter box but they still seem to pee everywhere so I'll wet it and see what happens. I hope you're enjoying life as a new rat owner. Thanks a lot!
And your rats are the cutest! I always loved rats but evry day I learn more and more about them from your show! Thank you so much! Pls make more videos!
I highly recommend getting a thin clear shower curtain and taping it or push pinning it against the wall. I did this to protect the paint on my wall and it works so well and is also super easy to wipe down :)
I would recommend keeping a small amount of bedding to put after you clean, new bedding doesn’t have their sent so they will pee more and make you have to clean it more. But your rats are so cute! P.s you should get them a hammock rats love hammocks

I really like how honest you are with the "not so cute" part of owning rats. No matter how huge your cage is, they will kick out poop XD Regarding Sputniks: there is no such thing as too many of them ^^ at one point we had multiple Sputniks connected via bridges like a mini city for rats hanging from the cage roof. It was so cute watching them climb around in it :D I am really excited to see the new cage setup and the new furballs joining the group ^^
What you usually get on the walls is porphyrin that sprays when they sneeze, which is red but looks brown after it dries. Rats always secrete porphyrin from their nose and eyes and you can see it after they just woke up and didn't have time to clean it yet. If you see porphryn on the rat's nose/eyes very frequently, or they sneeze a lot, or make a noise when breathing that means they probably have a respiratory infection or some other health issue and you need to take them to the vet asap.
Just some advice. Get Facebook and join some rats friend groups and go on market place I found a double critter nation for $ 150. Anything the size of there head the rest of there body can fit thorough. But other wise the cage set up is wonderful. Keep up the great rat care.🐀❤️

@@alexandrastott honestly, u r doing amazing, I am so grateful to u for doing ur research, I’m a forever subscriber. I have had a grand total of 6 rats, currently have two boys right now, but for my first 4 i didn’t do as much research as I should have and it is a constant source of guilt for me. The only suggestion that I have for u other than the one I commented is that your current cage might be too small for 4 rats. Of course all natal female mammals get their periods and we all know from experience that all we want during that time of the month is to be alone, in our room, with the chocolate (I’m a trans man, so yes, I know the pain. Also don’t actually feed ur rats chocolate, it can actually be deadly for them, please do not do it). Anyway, I think a bigger cage might be good for them, female rats also REALLY like to run in wheels, so if u can get your hands on one of those they will love u forever, I swear. Just make sure that you get the sizing right or else it will bend their spine. Rat wheel should be at least 30 centimetres at their longest point, they r very big, so I recommend saucer wheels instead since they are horizontal and will take up less room but u can still make ur cage more fun 😜
Add a second litter box in the corner of the ledge near the hammocks/spacepods. Rats will get lazy an not go far to pee when they wake up so if u make it close an convenient ull have more of a chance of them usin it to pee in, especially with a pee stone. Also it helps if u dont do the whole cage at one time. For example do the beddin but not the hammocks, spacepods, hides, then a few days later do them but not the beddin. They want their spaces to smell like them, so when u clean everythin at once they feel the need to scent everythin by peein on all of it
Thank you so much! I've picked up a double critter nation cage & will get that all setup when I introduce my rats together- it is definitely an upgrade!
Oh when I introduced my 2 new boys I had a small cage. I put them in one that would fit in the critter nation. So I know not a lot of room for the babies but it was enough room for them for just a couple weeks or so. It had a shelf in it and I put toys, a hide and a hammock in it food and water too. When I got them home I put them in the small cage next to the big boy cage for a couple of days they could see and sniff each other but not touch. About 4 or 5 days of that then I put the small cage in the critter nation cage and watched close by to make sure they got along. I would leave them in there for a week or 2 depending on how they act and how comfortable you feel they are going to get along. Last I put them together in a tub with only a towel in it. Watched how they reacted to one another and if they are good in the tub I put them all back in the big cage together and supervise for a bit. Worked great for me. They would get used to each other without severely hurting one another. Good luck and best wishes.

So excitied to see new babies! And that you found a good breeder. When I got my rats I was lucky enough to get my pair of Siamese girls cause someone back out but immediately I went on a waiting list for two more I ended up having 9 in totally on mixed ages unfortunately with their short life span you don’t want your rat to be alone so some people start with a trio 🥰 I don’t know why but my gut feeling is maybe thinking you are gonna get double rexx ❤️
Omg that is so lucky! That is so fun, do you still have 9? I wish I started with at least 3 but I guess I can only work with what I have now. I'm so glad you made a guess, you'll have to see
For training, I would keep working on ‘around’ but try to fade out the lure, which basically means to make your finger less and less obvious until they are spinning with just a cue from your fingers. Shadow the Rat has a really good video on it here: ruclips.net/video/TOefgE79rjM/видео.html
Once your ratties get the basic tricks down, they'll be ready for any trick! 😂 I completely agree with you that rats tend to get happier/confident the more rats there are! ❤️❤️ Can't wait to see your future rats! 😁
Your rats are so cute. I have two of my own:) but one thing pls don’t use towels, the strings from the towels can cause them to choke on the strings but fleece works a lot better and it way more cozy. My girls go crazy over fleece :)
I’ve really loved watching your rattie videos , their set up is fab! I currently have 4 stinky boys. I would actually recommend taking out the plastic ledge as these attract pee more than anything, any ledge is like their preferred toilet area 😂 just thought I’d mention because it made a huge difference for me ! X
The ledge definitely accumulates so much pee, I find myself wiping it down daily. I'll need to find some things to fill the space. Thank you for pointing it out!
Hi my rats pee on my wall as well so I put a towel behind it so it gets on the towel not wall and this way u can just wash the towel instead of ruining ur walls
In my most recent video I actually bought some hammocks and rearranged the cage :) if you check it out, let me know what you think of the new cage setup! ruclips.net/video/c_yGBfhaIYY/видео.html
I've never tried giving mealworms to them but I know how great it would be for them. I should try that out, thank you! Where do you pick up mealworms, pet stores?
I wipe everything with that solution but I put the dog rope into the washing machine- I don't do this on a weekly basis. Is that the dog thingy you meant?
I have 3 wooden platforms in my cage. I'm looking for plastic platforms, because my rats like to pee on it and that's a problem with the wood - it absorbs the smell and I can't get rid of it no matter how often I wash it. Also, my rats are potty trained, but it mostly works for pooping. When it comes to pee, they do it anywhere.
Yea same here, I just can't find a good cleaning video for it, they say put it in the oven but how is that gonna remove the pee smell? It also has metal on it too
@@antivaxxnugs7859 High temperature should kill the bacteria, but it won't get rid of the smell. I wash it in a toilet disinfection. Still smells. Today I washed it in vinegar and boiling water. Urine smell seems to be gone. It smells like a vinegar a little, but it should vanish. So maybe I found a solution (temporarily). New platforms are needed for sure.
With my rats being litter trained it is only for the poo's as well- I haven't been able to figure out how to control them from peeing everywhere. I've learned that the rats will always just pee on the platforms, so it seems to just be better off without the platforms at all- this saves me a lot of the hassle
should I get rats I’ve been looking into it for a while now and after watching your videos makes me want them sooo much more. Can you do a video on tips that you’ve used while having rats? and btw I love your channel!!
I also want rats and have been researching for like a week. My parents are kinda on board but it they say yes I have to wait until we have been on vacation.

You can try teaching your rats paw! It’s very easy! You just need to get them to stand up and put your finger under one of their paws. Reward them and repeat!❤🎉🎉🎉😊
when you size up the cage which you should do very soon you should change the water bottles to water bowls they get more water like that and with the bottles they get dehydrated so please switch soon!!!!
I have a 2 water bottles and 2 water bowls in my cage and two of my girls really prefer the bottle and they get plenty of hydration :) I think it's best to just give them options
@@cattydolls307 they also get dirty from the inside so if u put a q-tip directly into where they drink you will see black bacteria if you’ve never cleaned. also a bird watering thing is perfect for them and clips on the cage if you are looking
I had a male rex dumbo that barely made it to one years old. He had arched back real bad. Never mated with a female I had him in with. He must have had health issues. Well anyway, I bought 2 female dumbo babies to go in with her being by herself. Usually a female her size or a single gets pinned down. The trio works out best for new introduction. Within a day they were all sleeping together in the same igloo. I had 2 in there just in case the older one wanted to get away.
Hey, im pretty sure towels aren't good at all for rats since they can chew on them and the towel strings become undone and they could choke on them or get tangled up in them.
Omg I don't think I'll ever own rats or hamsters but this is so interesting!! If I ever need to clean out a cage I now know how to lol! Yes sometimes training days are so good, and other times my dog doesn't even react to her name 😂 This seems like so much work, you are such a good mom! I'm glad the little babies have a clean and comfy home!
Well thank you for watching! It can be your little party trick and random bit of knowledge haha. It is quite a bit of work- like caring for most animals. But they are so cuteeee so of course it's worth it.
I really enjoy videos like this! I also have two rats, although they are boys with cute little dumbo ears 🥰 I'm thinking about getting two more a little later.
Hi! Your ratties are so cute and Beautiful just like you! But I would recommend putting a rock in your rats litter tray, because they like to pee on rocks;) I LOVVEEE how you did so much research! That really makes me happy! And you have a really good busy cage for them! Really good job! ❤️🥰
I also recommend instead of using a towel for your sputnik then use fleece, because rat feet can actually get stuck in the towels ( wich they actually also can in fleece, but the chance is bigger with a towel)
How often do you spot clean your cage (getting the pees and poos out) and often do you clean the items (ropes, wheel, sputniks, etc.) I hoping to get some rats but I'm worried things will get unsanitary before I notice they're dirty lol.
Trust me, I have 4 and you can smell them a mile away. You will know when to spot clean them. I roughly spot clean every other day or every day and clean the items every 4 days maybe. Don’t worry you will notice they’re dirty!
@@dazikb326 Thank you! I'm going to be keeping them in my garage (not connected to my house) since my parents don't want them stinking up the house. I'm probably just extra paranoid because they will be my first ever pets.
The bedding you are using is not good for them, it has dust in it, and that causes respiratory issues! I'm not being rude or anything! I just wanted to let you know! I use fleece, and it works really well!
Fleece is not a perfect alternative either as it has absolutely no ammonia control, which causes respiratory infections in rats. Using fleece means having to replace it every 2-3 days which is very time consuming. It also denies rats the ability to dig which is a natural behavior they should have access to
It took me a while to find a good bedding that doesn't cause too much dust. This one had great reviews and I really like it! It is the Kaytee Clean & Cozy small pet bedding - www.kaytee.com/all-products/small-animal/clean-cozy-white
Yes, I totally agree! I've been wanting some but wasn't sure the best place to pick them up. I saw a few on amazon but didn't know if they would be good quality. Do you have any recommendations for where to order some?
@@alexandrastott definitely etsy! ( adorakablepets) or you could honestly make some your self if you have a sewing machine, just some fleece blankets from dollar general will do and they’re only like 3 bucks! that’s what i do for my babies, it’s super easy
@@leigha2647 Okay got it, thank you!! I've never thought of checking out Dollarama for fleece so I'll be sure to take a look. I really appreciate it :)
I found with my rats that they really like peeing in a glass jar. I put a glass jar in as a hideout but they started peeing in it s that is their new litterbox.
Rather then another Sputnik try tu buy the bigger Sputnik. That bigger one is called Sputnik XL. I have it in my cage and my 4 rats love to sleep in it. (I do not know if you can buy Sputnik XL in your country, but in my country we have it) :)
Hiii I was wondering about getting rats and I was wondering if I should use towels as bedding?? Bc I have heard they might choke but if anyone recommends anything that would be appreciated ❤❤
Yes, I have three girls and we only use towels for bedding, we never use paper, bedding, or wood of any kind because it affects their respiratory system. It also encourage them to pee more because they can't tell the difference between the litter and the bedding and think it's all the same thing. Also, with good respect to the owner here she is not cleaning them nearly enough, they should be cleaned through their entire cage every day or every other day at the absolute most.
@@itsbree8001 good to know that things are working out for you; we use wood pellets in Tupperware for their litter box. You can get these usually from pet stores or also hardware stores in the fireplace section but just make sure those ones don't have any chemicals in them. We wipe down the cage daily by using unscented baby wipes, and this works really well. Once a week make sure you use an animal safe spray cleaner and wet rags to do it more thoroughly.
Okay thank you! I'll try to do that. I've seen that specific video and her other training videos and I'm always in awe!!
@@alexandrastott Yeah! I can’t understand how she does such complicated tricks! I have been able to teach my girls spin, but that’s really it.
Once your ratties get the basic tricks down, they'll be ready for any trick! 😂 I completely agree with you that rats tend to get happier/confident the more rats there are! ❤️❤️ Can't wait to see your future rats! 😁
Okay, thank you I'll keep that in mind. I just want them to have the happiest life ever :)
@@alexandrastott Your rats already look very happy! You're doing an amazing job taking care of them! Thank you for being an amazing rat owner! 🥰
Its cute, how exited u seem❤️
Hi my rats pee on my wall as well so I put a towel behind it so it gets on the towel not wall and this way u can just wash the towel instead of ruining ur walls
Great idea, thanks a lot!
I recommend a cozy hammock 😍🥰
In my most recent video I actually bought some hammocks and rearranged the cage :) if you check it out, let me know what you think of the new cage setup! ruclips.net/video/c_yGBfhaIYY/видео.html
Your rats are sooo adorable 🥺❤️
Thank you! They are growing SO FAST
Shadow the Rat has some really helpful training videos ;)
I've been watching some (that's how I saw the trick where the rat outs the ball through the hoop), thank you!
If you have the stomach for it a good protein treat is dried mealworms. They love them. And hard boiled eggs.
I've never tried giving mealworms to them but I know how great it would be for them. I should try that out, thank you! Where do you pick up mealworms, pet stores?
Your rats are growing on me! They're so cute!!
I'm so glad! Thank you :)
I have 3 rats, and two Sputniks, they tend to just squeeze into the one haha but they do occasionally use the other one. Hope this helped😂
How do you clean the dog thingy? also just wipe it with the water + vinegar solution? And how often?
I wipe everything with that solution but I put the dog rope into the washing machine- I don't do this on a weekly basis. Is that the dog thingy you meant?
@@alexandrastott ah yes the dog rope! thanks for your answer :)
I’m so happy for you!!! Such a great rat momma!!! I wanna come back as your pet rat LOL 🥰🐁
Thank you so much!!
Same problem.
@@alexandrastott Yeah, it would be better without the platforms.. But my rats like them and I don't know what to put there instead of it.
should I get rats I’ve been looking into it for a while now and after watching your videos makes me want them sooo much more. Can you do a video on tips that you’ve used while having rats? and btw I love your channel!!
What kind of bedding is that? I'm using carefresh it says 99.9 dust free but it's very dusty and I'm pretty sure my rats hate it
I'm excited for what's to come 🥳🥳🥳
Me too!!!
I'm getting 2 next week I'm so excited ! - UK
Wow that is so exciting!! Have you had rats before?
@@alexandrastott I haven’t , but I have been doing so much research for so long that it feels as if I’ve had 100 😅
you inspired me to get rats and now i get to get some
Yay, that is such great news!!
What cage is this?
I want rats so bad😭 I have been doing research but I feel like I should wait until im older because it seems like a lot of work
I also want rats and have been researching for like a week. My parents are kinda on board but it they say yes I have to wait until we have been on vacation.
same here! but im getting one male when i come back from summer camp. his name is going to be Basil and im soooo happy!!!
@@sagey.wagey101 you need to get at least two rats, they are social animals and need friends!!
@@LordLuciferKråka OH OK! i was told males could get into fights with other males about space AND ( should of said this before im soo sry) its a mouse not a rat i suck at reading im sry for worrying you
@@LordLuciferKråka yes thats me too lol
@@bellapretto9581 I do use two 'Coop Cups' that hook onto the bars, and I clean the inside of the tube with a straw cleaning brush once a week
Do they pee when you take them out and play with them? Also do they kick bedding out onto the floors?
mine do
I really enjoy videos like this! I also have two rats, although they are boys with cute little dumbo ears 🥰 I'm thinking about getting two more a little later.
I'm also upgrading their cage to a DCN😊
That is so exciting! I'm also upgrading my cage and thinking of getting 2 more. Haha we're on the same track together!
Watching you clean the cage and play with them just makes me want rats so bad 😂☺
Awww, do you have nay pets currently? They have made such great pets honestly!
@@alexandrastott yes i currently have 2 guinea pigs 1 hedgehog and 2 hamsters so i certainly dont need anymore 😆
That water bottle is so big and beautiful!! Where do you get it? I've never seen one like it before
It came with a set of 2 and a stand holder from Walmart or pet value I believe. It was sold as a dish for cat food but I use it for the rats.
Hey sis here watching ! I'm intrigued lol
Thank you angel!
Hi! Your ratties are so cute and Beautiful just like you! But I would recommend putting a rock in your rats litter tray, because they like to pee on rocks;) I LOVVEEE how you did so much research! That really makes me happy! And you have a really good busy cage for them! Really good job! ❤️🥰
Ohhh, I saw you already have a rock in;) sry ❤️
I also recommend instead of using a towel for your sputnik then use fleece, because rat feet can actually get stuck in the towels ( wich they actually also can in fleece, but the chance is bigger with a towel)
you should do a rat training video
Prolly was inpatient too get em too🙌🏽
I love your cage! PS I loved the vid and I subed
Aww thank you so much! Let me know if you have any video suggestions you'd like to see from me :)
OMG 😳 I can’t believe you actually saw my comment AND responded 😱😱
@@rats4ever962 Of course, I'm so appreciative that you took the time to leave me a kind comment! It's the least I can do❤️
What is the bedding you are using?
Paper bedding
You’re such a great mama!
Well thank you!!
@@kooby122 That sounds like a great idea! I’m sure you will be fine but just in case Good Luck!
@@dazikb326 Thank you so much!
It also denies rats the ability to dig which is a natural behavior they should have access to
what bedding do you use? it looks so soft!
It took me a while to find a good bedding that doesn't cause too much dust. This one had great reviews and I really like it! It is the Kaytee Clean & Cozy small pet bedding - www.kaytee.com/all-products/small-animal/clean-cozy-white
Perhaps you can hang some cute beach towels on the walls around the cage. I think it would be a big help.
ive heard putting a small smooth stone in the liter tray can help them pee there mostly
you should definitely get some more soft fleece hammocks! but i love love love your active layout
You are a sweet person Alexandra, cute rats
That is so kind, thank you!!
When they're on your bed do they poop and pee?
Washrags have loops that they get they get their feet caught in.
i have hamsters and what i do to potty train them it i put the bedding with pee on it in the litter box. my new one was potty trained in 4 days!
That is such a good idea, thank you so much!!
To help with the rats peeing every where you could put a stone in the litter tray which they pee on
She does have one
What is a pee stone? I have rats and have never heard of them before
Hi, your rats are beautiful. What kind of vinegar do you use? Thank you
Can you make rats jump??
what’s that piece of cloth or fabric in the rat hides?
im doing the same trick! your rats are awesome
Oh thank you, I'll definitely look into the XL!

Wow, very far away from Canada. Thank you for watching :)
Thankyou for sharing ❤️
Thank you for watching :)
Is it me or do you have the smaller space pod which is designed for mice, hamsters, and gerbils?
it doesn’t matter the whole cage probably didn’t even show a rat 😐. like who gives af
they dont pee in the litter box because peeing on stuff for a rat is how they mark it so it makes them more comfortable :)
I just got my rat remy yesterday 🤪
Make sure you have at least two they will get extremely lonely
You can teach them stay and walk ?
How old do rats get?
1.5 to3.5 years
Rats live up to 3 years
I've heard of putting a smooth rock in the cage and the rat will more likely pee on that rather than any place else.
@@NotoriousBroadcastsOk thank u so much yes now that I have them I use blankets and fleece so thanks so much!!
@@NotoriousBroadcasts Yes my rats are very happy with their cage and I do clean out there cage twice a week!!
I recommend getting dust free paper bedding for them, or at least giving the a dig box with soil/coc soil as they burrow.
You're rats are so well behaved free roaming 🙇🏽♂️🤧
They have started to be able to 'escape' and get everywhere lol. I really need to keep a close eye on them lately.
