Honest to God, I used to dance to this song when I was a teenager and it has been one of my favorite songs of all time, but I had never read all the lyrics. Wow! I am crying reading them! I am very much into spirituality and this song (to me, at least), talks about the freedom that we are all seeking, especially now, of a place that is far away from here, where beings of other kinds have been seeking for us too (alien brothers and sisters, maybe?), where we will have a life review (heaven?) and we will be happy forever! Beautiful song and beautiful lyrics!
This song has meaning to me in my real life, but what it resonated with most directly was one of my characters in my stories. He feels all alone, trapped in an abusive situation and like he has to fight every day just to survive. There's no time or space for him to express anything in his soul, but he secretly longs for such an expression. Another character, a spirit, takes him away to meet the spirits of people in the past who were just like him. They welcome him as one of them, and tell him that many of the unique things he does are part of their culture, the culture of the people that are like they are. The people he never knew existed. As soon as he learns that there is such a people, and that his own existence makes sense, he turns around and realizes his whole life up until this moment was not random and baffling. It was all preparation for his life as one of them, a glorious life in which his abuser will have no power over him. It may be a story, but all stories that I write are taken from real life. A moment when you realize that you are not alone, when you find where you fit in the world and what you are, when everything suddenly makes sense and you realize what your whole life was leading up to. That moment is real. It comes at different times in the life of different people, but it is real. And there's no need for Heaven - it happens right here.
