  • Published on Apr 17, 2026
  • This Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, NPR Music celebrates artists from all corners of Latinidad with an 'El Tiny' takeover.
    Anamaria Sayre | October 13, 2025
As Gloria Estefan embarks on a 50-year retrospective of her career, this Tiny Desk takes on the same tone, heart and air of reflection. After all, the pioneering vision, authentic insistence and undeniably captivating rhythms of Estefan created the path for Spanish-language music to thrive in the U.S.
In the 1980s, Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine proved to a broader audience that Latin American sounds are so magnetic and our souls so on fire that the rhythm at some point did get everyone. At the Tiny Desk, their level of artistic savvy shines brighter than ever. In spotlighting Cuban percussion and the gorgeously refined vocal acumen of the hailed pop star, this set gives space for the mountainous musicianship of forever hits and Latino cultural staples like "Rhythm is Gonna Get You" and "Conga."
This joyous performance is another example of what many of us have always known to be true: Gloria Estefan transcends borders, unites communities and gets people on the dance floor.

I’ve worked with this beautiful woman for 47 years, we were both practically kids. The joy has been a constant over all the years while the music has changed and I’ve grown to understand it more personally. She and the Sound Machine are the perfect guest for Tiny Desk; her generosity of spirit belongs in everyone’s home, up close and personal. Gloria and Emilio are living legends, and I’m so proud and glad they make Miami their home.

He was even part of the Broadway show Get On Our Feet and has worked with her on so many songs, as well as worked with so many other artists!! I’m so proud of all his work and influence in the music that I listen to daily ❤️❤️❤️ Bien contenta de ti Tío Teddy!

Sept of 1985, I left northern Maine to start college at the University of Miami. I arrived to my dorm in Coral Gables, got my few belongings up to my room on the top floor of Mahoney Hall, and plugged in my boom box. When I turned it on, the very first notes I heard were the first notes of this new exciting song I'd never heard: Conga. I thought, "I'm gonna like it here." And I did. Very much. Thanks, Gloria and company for all the music. ❤

Me encanta Gloria Estefan. Whether you speak Spanish or not when she sings in Spanish it cuts to your very soul. Getting to hear her sing "Mi Tierra," which has to be up there as one of the best songs of all time, in this context is absolutely incredible, wish she had done the whole thing.

As a young child, I was riding the car with my dad, listening to the radio. I look out the side window and see the sun setting. I start pleading with him, " Please dad, we have to get to home. The sun is almost down. It's coming for me." My confused father asks, "What's coming for you, mija?" I whisper so it can't hear me, "The Rhythm". My amused father asks me what I think a rhythm is. " The lady on the radio said the rhythm is going to get me tonight, and it's almost night time. I think it's some kind of boogeyman or something, but I don't want to stick around here and find out." My dad had to pull over he was laughing so hard.
It's hilarious to hear Gloria herself confirm that the Rhythm is in fact a boogieman.

I, half Dutch, Half Turkish dreamy 13 year old girl living in Istanbul, I remember going to Scheveningen in the Netherlands knowing Gloria had been there, sadly in a wheelchair, but she had been there. I remember walking up and down the sea side promenade, feeling her energy. I was a fan without ever knowing I was a fan up until that moment. I listened to her songs and she was and IS this megastar. Her donating millions into medical research after her accident, that says so much about her true self. Thank you Gloria!

Believe it or not, the Netflix movie Vivo is what brought Gloria back into my musical consciousness. I’ve heard the classics but grew a new appreciation for her. Clicked so fast on this video. Lemme get my dancing shoes.

Good enough. Younger generations always find these great artists in one way or the other. It's beautiful.

I grew up with my mom listening to Gloria...this music was always in our house. My favorite album of hers, "Mi Tierra." I know all the songs and lyrics :) Used to study her CD insert :)

I randomly dance all the time . At least once weekly when I get a strange look I say “ this is what Gloria was talking about, the rhythm got me” 😂 That song was out when I was little. I always thought she was so gorgeous and such an icon.

Nostalgia y mucho nervio de ver a mi heroina casi sin voz. La vida nos pasa la cuenta a todos sin excepción, aún así disfrute mucho los recuerdos.
