Sailing Solo to Pitcairn: Intrepid Hippo

- Intrepid Hippo at the Home of the Bounty Mutineers. Sailing solo across the Pacific from Ecuador to Tahiti in my 1972 Maxi 95, Hippolyta, I had the chance to stop at the Pitcairn Islands.
The 50-odd inhabitants are descended from the crew of Her Majesty's Armed Vessel Bounty, who mutinied during a mission to transport Tahitian breadfruit to the British Caribbean, in the late 18th Century. Under the leadership of Master's Mate Fletcher Christian, they set Captain Bligh and the loyal crew adrift in an open boat, which he then successfully navigated 3000 nautical miles to SE Asia. The mutineers continued to Pitcairn with various Tahitian wives and crew from Tahiti, burnt HMAV Bounty in the Bay and have lived there ever since.
After waiting offshore overnight, I was lucky enough to anchor in calm(ish) weather and head ashore on two consecutive days to explore. Pitcairn Islanders are hugely friendly people and their home is an isolated paradise.

Great video! A very few sailing channels let us look at this tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Thank you for taking us with you! Greetings from November Germany!
Watching this is like being at a funeral
I solo sailed the Caribbean and man I sure wish I would have had a little help from time to time, doing stuff single handed can be rough
Great episode sailing very remote island in the South Pacific Greetings from tropical paradise island Kauai ,Hawaii. About 40 years living in paradise isolated island Kauai.
Imagine how excited and relieved the Bounty mutineers were to have finally found their future home which was not where the charts of the day showed the island
to be.
Great video sailing ⛵️ thanks for sharing. Absolutely beautiful island Pictarn 🏝 Greetings from beautiful tropical paradise island Kauai 🏝 Hawaii.
Best cruising video I’ve seen for ages. Inspirational. Thank you.
Absolutely amazing. The town that I live in was named after Robert Pitcairn. It’s a dream of mine to get there
It was so nice to meet you! Thank you for the visit! Great footage of our home! Safe journey and travels! - Torika
😂pedophile island thanks you for the positive publicity 🎉
Thank you! You too!
Pitcairn è selvaggia e meravigliosa.
Non mi stanco di ammirarla e di conoscerla.
Awww I like Ms T 🐢 ❤️
Great video. A piece of history in its own right.
Great video of Pitcairn Island. I met Betty Christian when she visited Saba Island. Her daughter is the pharmacist on Saba. So I wanted to research the island. Your video shows what a beautiful island and friendly people. All of I think 50 people I've there. What a peaceful life they have. Thank you for sharing your adventure.
I bet she is a descendant of Fletcher Christian . I think it may only be 44 people lol.
I guess you don’t much about Pitcairn Island…
Fantastic video - loved it! And congratulations on accomplishing a great solo passage
I adore what you are able to do!
Hi Henry, it's great to see you put your first full length video out and to know how far you've come in 12 months since you set sail from Hornet. Si and I really enjoyed it and laughed about the secret we know about why you've got a curtain up as a toilet door when we saw it in the video! Congratulations on everything you've achieved so far. We're now in Tavira in the Algarve after setting sail from Gosport at the end off July and leaving the UK from Cawsand near Plymouth at the start August! Not long now before we're in the Med! Fair winds and calm seas!
What an incredible journey. Fantastic!
On cruising dingys, we concluded best either: (i) go small (in our case, 10.5ft, air floor, 2.5hp motor OR; (ii) go with something that can plane (15hp engine, rigid floor, davits and/or crane, etc). We played around with intermediate sizes (6hp engine, 12ft) but concluded they give you neither simplicity nor power. Our small dingy can be deflated and stored below and our outboard can be lifted with one hand, so we are happy with our choice but, yes, we often hitch rides off bigger boats and sometimes cannot go ashore.
Hi, Im from Philippines. I love sailing videos, hoping someday I can sail around the world.
Wow beautiful small country in Pacific area.
Bravo 👏👏👏
Awesome adventure.
So well put together as a story.
Can’t wait to watch more.
Adventure On! 😊👍
Glad you enjoyed it. Working on the next one.
Good to see a new to me channel and Pitcairn. I'll look forward to your onward journey, thanks.
Wow. That was epic. Super lucky to get the conditions to anchor there. Well done on the video mate
Great video. I’m hoping you produce some more!
Excellent video thanks for sharing 👏👏👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Put the front panel in the dingy the hoist the nose up in the air, then u can put the other panels in
More cliff dives with drone
Great video!
Thanks!
Liked video just because it is crazy to sail all alone, I am scared of water
well done mate
Hydrovane is the best, loving ours.
Well done. Great video. Watching from Davao. Welcome here anytime
Whenever we can, we get picked up by a panga rather than use our little dingy. Beats getting rolled over!.
Soo lucky Brother! It's always been my dream, to go there for a month or two! I'm a dreamer!
Looks like an amazing fishing desto !! Look at all that reef structure , No real safe harbour is a bit of a bummer though. Would be a hard life living there though . I did not see any air access so if you got sick , you're buggered!
Yeah - I deffo would have jumped in with the speargun if I'd had a bit longer but lots of sharks too and with no dive buddy...
Aye mate, hard RIB tenders sole needs to be placed when the RIB is mostly deflated. Your not fighting the air in the tubes. I single hand a lot and found that method works.
Wow the first drone shot looked beautiful nice colors on the other side of the island. What country is that place in? I loved your video it just showed up on my you tube. I'll subscribe hope to see more of your videos soon. Stay safe young man God bless you watching from Roseville California USA.
Awsome videos. What size dinghy is that? I’ve got a 95 myself. Lovely boats.
Thanks for great video.
