  • Intrepid Hippo at the Home of the Bounty Mutineers. Sailing solo across the Pacific from Ecuador to Tahiti in my 1972 Maxi 95, Hippolyta, I had the chance to stop at the Pitcairn Islands.
The 50-odd inhabitants are descended from the crew of Her Majesty's Armed Vessel Bounty, who mutinied during a mission to transport Tahitian breadfruit to the British Caribbean, in the late 18th Century. Under the leadership of Master's Mate Fletcher Christian, they set Captain Bligh and the loyal crew adrift in an open boat, which he then successfully navigated 3000 nautical miles to SE Asia. The mutineers continued to Pitcairn with various Tahitian wives and crew from Tahiti, burnt HMAV Bounty in the Bay and have lived there ever since.
After waiting offshore overnight, I was lucky enough to anchor in calm(ish) weather and head ashore on two consecutive days to explore. Pitcairn Islanders are hugely friendly people and their home is an isolated paradise.

Imagine how excited and relieved the Bounty mutineers were to have finally found their future home which was not where the charts of the day showed the island
    to be.

Great video of Pitcairn Island. I met Betty Christian when she visited Saba Island. Her daughter is the pharmacist on Saba. So I wanted to research the island. Your video shows what a beautiful island and friendly people. All of I think 50 people I've there. What a peaceful life they have. Thank you for sharing your adventure.

Hi Henry, it's great to see you put your first full length video out and to know how far you've come in 12 months since you set sail from Hornet. Si and I really enjoyed it and laughed about the secret we know about why you've got a curtain up as a toilet door when we saw it in the video! Congratulations on everything you've achieved so far. We're now in Tavira in the Algarve after setting sail from Gosport at the end off July and leaving the UK from Cawsand near Plymouth at the start August! Not long now before we're in the Med! Fair winds and calm seas!

On cruising dingys, we concluded best either: (i) go small (in our case, 10.5ft, air floor, 2.5hp motor OR; (ii) go with something that can plane (15hp engine, rigid floor, davits and/or crane, etc). We played around with intermediate sizes (6hp engine, 12ft) but concluded they give you neither simplicity nor power. Our small dingy can be deflated and stored below and our outboard can be lifted with one hand, so we are happy with our choice but, yes, we often hitch rides off bigger boats and sometimes cannot go ashore.

Aye mate, hard RIB tenders sole needs to be placed when the RIB is mostly deflated. Your not fighting the air in the tubes. I single hand a lot and found that method works.
