  • WCBS 88 New York - NYC Blackout Coverage - February 6 1971 - Radio Aircheck
    WCBS Newsradio 880, a staple of New York City radio, has been delivering breaking news and information to listeners for decades.
    Known for its in-depth coverage of local, national, and international events, the station has played a vital role in keeping NY, NJ & Conn informed. WCBS had a team of experienced journalists and reporters, like Charles Osgood, Lou Adler, Art Athens, Jim Donnelly, Pat Parson, Ben Farnsworth, Don Swaim, Jeff Caplan, Wayne Cabot, and many others kept New Yorkers informed. The station's commitment to providing reliable and accurate news has made it a trusted source for countless New Yorkers from the station's launch in 1967, to its demise in 2024.
    On this aircheck, you'll hear WCBS covering the blackout of 1971, as New York City lost power for several hours. The station seemed to have dropped most advertising, and concentrated on coverage of the power outage.
    Feel free to check out some of the many other videos on the Ellis B Feaster's Radio Channel! Established in 2008! One of You Tube's oldest RADIO AIRCHECK MUSEUM with a NEW VIDEO posted daily at 3PM EST.
    After over 40 years working on the radio, I have recorded lots of radio airchecks, and many from my friends as well. You'll find audio of many radio personalities who have passed away. Lots radio recordings from the 1940s, through the 2010.
    We also talk about radio broadcasting. If you happen to have classic airchecks, maybe even of yourself on the air, we'd love to share it here! If you are on the radio, or do voiceovers for You Tube videos, I have tips to make your radio show or video voiceovers better!
    In addition to sharing audio from my 40 years in broadcasting, we also share videos about Travel & Cruising. I share tips on how I travel cheaply, so you can do it also!

    I can understand why they made this a big deal given their was a bigger blackout in 1965 and this was years before the chaos of 1977

      What would make sense in order to salvage at least the WCBS calls on AM Radio would be to move them to AM 1010 & swap the Classic Hits format on FM 101.1 with the news format on FM 92.3 with both FM's keeping their respective calls

      CBS-FM bills more in advertising $$$ than CBS AM does. Moving the FM’s successful format to another frequency literally does nothing and solves nothing. (And besides, the WCBS calls themselves were trademarked by CBS, and outside of Audacy, no one else can utilize them.)

    I was just shy of my 8th birthday when this happened. If_ I had the radio on at all on a Sunday night, it was probably tuned to WJRZ, a tin pot station from Hackensack that played country music. Yes, a country fan in Jersey in 1971. I was the family weirdo. I'm glad you posted this. When WCBS is doing satellite-driven sports talk and some major news event happens, listeners will be helpless. The only news station NYC has now is 1010WINS and their signal is a bad joke. WCBS had a signal that boomed down I95 clear to Florida. I found that out in 1991 when I lived in Pompano Beach.

      @@EllisFeaster - It should be noted that 1010 WINS' studios and offices, as of Sunday night, Feb. 7, 1971, were within the affected area of the blackout - at 90 Park Avenue (between 39th and 40th Streets), on the 19th floor. I have to presume that once the lights began to go out they promptly activated their backup generator? Also, would it be lucky if someone had a WINS aircheck from that night.

    • @SigmaRho2922
      @SigmaRho2922 18 дней назад

      This is more than just a format change. ESPN radio is changing its primary frequency from 1050 to 880. Therefore WCBS is considered to be a defunct station and WHSQ is a successor of 1050 rather than WCBS.
