      Hopefully we can commit to doing one long form video a month. They take a LOT more time to do than the shorts but we are learning and slowly maybe getting better at it. Shorts are also terrible for conveying any useful, lasting information but have been pretty good at getting on folks’ radars.

    French self-defence manuals from the 1890s-1930s include the "edge up" grip for knife fighting- they say it is done so the blade cannot easily be grabbed from you, as you can simply slice upwards into the adversary's hand as they reach for it. I was taught the same for Bowie knife in the Keating/Comtech system.

      Yeah I remember seeing some video clip with James Williams, and he also pointed out the issue with guards catching on things-fouling up the draw? It was a while ago when I watched it, so my memory is foggy. Anyways, the good news-we should have another batch in March, and maybe another in April. I have no idea if it will become popular-in the past several years, the fixed blade market seems geared towards the short stuff.

      @@LitQueen3we should have another batch in March. Truth in advertising: It’s a 3/16” thick spine, so the edge angle is going to be significantly stouter than a typical butcher knife. The thinner spines and higher bevels on butcher knives will be better at slicing.

    with the extreme curve this knife could be used to thrust upwards and curve under the ribs and easily reach vital organs in a grapple.

    • @wingardwearables
      @wingardwearables  5 месяцев назад

      Definitely. Also we did some simple stab tests-a cardboard witness panel was placed over an archery target (tightly compressed foam00designed to catch arrows-including tipped with broadheads). In hammer grip, if your wrist is locked firmly, the extreme curve of that “trailing point” results in a pretty large entry wound. Measured off the cardboard, it was about 3 inches wide-that would be pretty devastating against the abdomen.

    It's always a pleasure too see you post a new video, you don't do tests very often, because some people make that their whole thing, but when you do do it it is very well thought out and it is a breath of fresh air.
    There is a lot of thoughtful applications, and I may have an idea that might fix that draw knife second handle problem.
    I do really like the draw knife concept because it may not be the perfect blade for it, but when you need a draw knife, it's in a situation where you can take anything that you can get and whatever you will make will be a million times better than just carving a block of wood sticking the blade into it and then tying some bark around it like I've seen before.
    My idea would be a corded system with a modified wrap-around type sheath.
    Imagine a 12-in piece of paracord, and you have a piece of folded over leather, It may not need to be made out of leather, but something flexible enough that I can go already over the sheath as if it is part of it, maybe some type of thinner weather-rated polypropylene, for simplicity purposes I would say marine grade.
    It would be like one of those laundry clips except very long and flat, very similar in shape to a credit card, it would "click" over the main sheath and it shouldn't be more than a centimeter or a fraction of a centimeter thick, and it would barely impede if done correctly, were the cord comes in is it would attach to the handle using that bulge as a stopper, and it would either have a groupier texture like... Now that I think about it there is this very cheap but very dependable Kevlar kite string that is so tough that you can use it to cut wood and that abrasive surface could be really good for gripping, and how it could be done is the cordage could provide tension keeping that secondary clip-on sheath constantly tensioned onto the blade so that way it would have a preference for not slipping, to change the angle of the tension there could be a little sliver of an edge, kind of like a thumbnail on the side of it to that the cordage could slip into to either put the tensioning higher or lower, similar to a bandsaw on the pioneer trail.
    You would unclip it and then clip it, the part with the tip goes into would be designed to be solid while the rest of it is unfoldable, maybe taking advantage of the inherent flexibility of polypropylene or other high impact plastics, and it would be flexible enough to go around the normal sheath while still being thin enough to do so, but it would be rigid enough to be clipped onto the end of the knife blade and that cordage could very easily be used for other purposes if you were to use that Kevlar kite string which you can find on Amazon, and all you'd have to do is wrap it around the handle to get a very thin and barely noticeable layer. Or, if you want to go the extra mile it can also be wrapped around the grip for the extra bit of physical retention if it doesn't get in the way but that just depends on how you tie it.

    • @wingardwearables
      @wingardwearables  5 месяцев назад +1

      I think I am correctly envisioning your idea, and that is pretty darn clever. I will need to survey materials-I don’t know if I can source a metal clip that’s the perfect size, but it may be possible to improvise or make one for prototyping purposes.

    Once you get some testing done... I'm sure a kukri could be adapted to that carry style! I'm thinking like a smaller Salyani kukri which is naturally/historically not as wide would work perfect. I'm imagining a kukri sheath where the upper half has an open back so that you could push the spine of the kukri outwards then draw to the side. 80 grit sandpaper on that micarta is very gripping also. That the beautiful thing about micarta.

    • @wingardwearables
      @wingardwearables  5 месяцев назад

      There may be customers that choose to “roughen” the handle scales for additional grip. If we did a rougher sanded finish, it would be grippier and save us a lot of time, but the color would be grey, not black, and it would change over time as the user gripped it or wore it-imparting the natural oils of the skin into the handle-that can wind up looking kinda blotchy/greasy, depending on what the handle is exposed to. So for this blade, we wanted the black paper micarta to actually look black and stay relatively stable in appearance. The grip profile is roughly contoured then it’s oiled and hand sanded pretty darn smooth-that takes a lot of time but looks great. All of that is done before I hand file the grooves.

      So I wear an over shirt in this video to conceal the Stingray Tomahawk that’s under my arm. But under that I am wearing a sweat shirt and belt-less sweatpants. The Love Handle is comfortable to carry and concealable just wearing boxer briefs and a t-shirt but I didn’t feel bold enough to go pant less on video. The already small audience would dwindle down even further.
      I found long, rigid knives, especially with wider blades, to be both challenging to conceal across a wide range of wardrobe selections, and also too uncomfortable for me-especially when bending or lunging or sitting. But I think some body shapes could pull it off better than others.
      Years ago there were a few videos that showed conceal carrying big bowie knives-still floating around on RUclips. I think most of the concepts were simple, elegant sheath designs with frogs to catch on waistband or belt. Depending on the size of the person, the handle could protrude quite a bit, but with enough covering garment (or in some cases, an untucked t-shirt coupled with significant body mass protruding above the belt), then it could be concealed. But I think the issue comes down to carry comfort. One of the very few people I know who conceal carries big bowie knives is a slim man up in Canada. Wears some bulky covering garments (hey, it’s cold up there) and this conceals the protruding handle, and when I asked him about whether or not it was comfortable to carry, he told me that frankly it was not comfortable to all. He felt he needed to carry it (primarily unplanned encounters with large land predators) and he just got used to the daily discomfort. Same with big kitchen knives-many criminals conceal carry them-often without sheaths, tucked at angles into the belt and lots of baggy covering garment on top. It conceals. Just not safe or comfortable. Doesn’t allow full range of motion.

    Love this design and it might actually work for everyday carry. I love the design of the tomahawks but there's no way I could stick those down my pant leg and do anything I need to do during the day other than just walk. To be fair I have never tried one but I have taken a wooden dowel that's a lot skinnier of the same length and put it in my waist to see how well I could move and it doesn't work out very well if you have to climb or lift your leg high. And appendix carry is definitely out on those, the handle would be hitting my balls all day. The Quill is bad ass though.

    • @wingardwearables
      @wingardwearables  5 месяцев назад +1

      The tomahawks work, but pant height, pant tightness, and belt tightness must be “dialed in” for the tomahawk to move with your body, even bigger leg/thigh motions like kicks or lunges are fine. Recommend checking out a video where we go over these factors and other carry tips.
