My grandfather was taking a colonel to a meeting near the front when he passed his brother as he marched to the front line. The two of them waved at each other. Thousands of individual unknown acts were responsible for the overall success in the Ardennes. Yet one major aspect, which was barely mentioned, was the extreme gas shortage facing the Germans. A huge aspect of the attack was to seize gas depots set up in Belgium, which thankfully never occurred due to hundreds, if not thousands, of delaying actions performed by small groups of soldiers. Upon retreat, the Germans simply walked away from tanks, trucks and basically anything requiring gas. Multitudes retreated on foot. The fact of the Allied supply chain - with obvious hiccups - was one of the decisive factors in this victory. In addition, owning the skies and the ability of the common soldier to take and make critical stands at the most incredible time of needs, all added to this turn around of events.

I wonder how those who served in the PACIFIC Theatre felt about BANZAI charges and kamikaze air attacks when the Ardennes Offensive is called "the greatest pitch battle"???
Probably the same as anyone else who served on any of WWII's battle fields. The only "greatest battle" is the one you would be fighting at any given moment.
Maybe he was referring to the fact that it was the largest battle as far as men and equipment involved . Anyone who has studied WW 2 knows that the Banzai attacks were some of the greatest battles fought anywhere. Guadalcanal , Saipan , Okinawa, and there were others as well .
This quote in the film is attrbuted to General Patton. Not so. “Brave Rifles! Veterans! You have been baptized in fire and blood and come out steel.” These were the words spoken by Gen. Winfield Scott at the sight of men of the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen after the bloody battle at Chapultepec in August 1847.
Well, since the producers snubbed General Patton's unparalleled feat of getting to Bastogne in such a timely and organized manner to save the day, I guess they had to throw him a bone of some kind.
That Austrian Corporal underestimated the Brits too. And the Russians. Hell, he underestimated everybody. That goes with believing your own propaganda!
I appreciate a good propaganda piece as much as the next person .. and I agree there is no honor in killing prisoners .. but good lord .. **grin** .. where is Walter Cronkite when we need him ..
Would be a good film if the announcer would stop telling the lie that Hitler alone was responsible for WW2. He had the full throated support of the German people.
Back then, war propaganda was at least still worth watching. Today, topics like incubators or weapons of mass destruction no longer make it possible to produce real hero films; the government has to fly planes into skyscrapers to create the right tension.
@@gordonlandreth9550 Never heard of "operation Northwooods"? The only documented fact of planned US military terror upon its own population to justify the invasion of Cuba. As for the 9/11, there is no definite proof of government involvement, but the Bush II regime endorsed the attacks as being of foreign origin, to justify the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq. There are so many discrepancies and holes in the official narrative, and it simply is not born out by known facts. *Pentagon panties* have been expelled by Afghan guerillas after 20 years of struggle, and Iraq is ruled by a US Shia puppet regime, but the 9/11 controversy had not subsided. Brave Rifles? 12000 yankees surrenderd as soon as the Germans showed up? Germans ran out fuel, then the Yanks called in air power to win it. The Yanks deserted in droves in the Hurtgen forest around the same time. One German was worth 10 Yankees.
The Germans effectively lost the battle in the first four days when the "elite" SS panzer army couldn't push through the Elsenborn ridge. Read Steven Zaloga's "Smashing Hitler's Panzers". Jerry lost this battle on tactical terms, running out of fuel just came later.
Dunkirk 1940? Crete 1941? USSR 1941? In Operation Citadel/Kursk Germany inflicted losses of at least 2 to 1 in every category, but still a huge victory for the Red Army.

It isn't a contest.
This quote in the film is attrbuted to General Patton. Not so.
“Brave Rifles! Veterans! You have been baptized in fire and blood and come out steel.”
These were the words spoken by Gen.

The German field-marshal Walther Model said the Germans' Ardennes Offensive was the worst-organised German offensive of the war.

That Austrian Corporal underestimated the Brits too. And the Russians.
Hell, he underestimated everybody. That goes with believing your own propaganda!

Would be a good film if the announcer would stop telling the lie that Hitler alone was responsible for WW2. He had the full throated support of the German people.
Isn’t Sacramento the Capital of CA? Glad we won the war.
This film does not mention the Third Army who fought in the battle.
“What is the capital of California? They better answer San Francisco.” The heck? San Francisco is wrong. 😆
Back then, war propaganda was at least still worth watching. Today, topics like incubators or weapons of mass destruction no longer make it possible to produce real hero films; the government has to fly planes into skyscrapers to create the right tension.
Your avatar explains all that needs to be known about you.
It seems odd they would do that , you might want double check .

The "Greatest Generation?" Only in the East, in the One theater of the War that was the Only they had a Right to be in . . . as they Actually Did Officially Declare War on the U.S. at least 6 days prior, about Dec.1st as verified by a cable sent to Washington, D.C. from an Australian Intelligence Agency Warning of a Huge Japanese Naval Flotilla headed East toward Hawaii . . . but that 'Immediate Attention' report went missing like the two from the Japanese Emperor sent the same time and same day 2 or 3 days before or were buried under the stack of "Inbox" important, 'Read Immediately' set up on FDR's desk by his Aide (Harry Hopkins(?)), yeah, the Pacific Theater against the Japanese NOT in Europe where once again the British, American and most of the French and other (Men of the Stone Club who were 'All In' on it too) were Suckered into another War Against Germany.
Hitler and the German Reich were a Blessing for Western Civilization but that was All Hidden Away, with a Little Help from their Friends in the Publishing Houses, Banks, Royals . . . by those who were the First to openly Declare their "Holy War" Against Germany in 1933 Not '39' and bought, bribed, threatened and blackmailed etc, what became the "All-Lies" as that little Club of men: Roosevelt, Churchill, de Gaulle and Stalin whose 'Club' title would suggest tough, rugged Men who built Castles and Thick Stone Walls but actually built None at all but Germany went 'All In' to try and Save Europe and Only wanted to make sure the Bolshevik's didn't Occupy & Corrupt one more foot of Europe with Hitler still pleading a "Appeal to Reason" in 1940 when the BEF, French and Belgiun Troops of almost 400,000 were spared by Germany at Dunkirk till June 26 when Humanities Traitor Winston Churchill showed his appreciation for Hitler's humaitarian gesture with the reply to his latest "Plea for Peace" with: "Nothing but Complete UnConditional Surrender would be accepted by her Majety" which achieved the desired and expected response by the which was an Immediate resumption of the Panzer Corp's. advance to the Beach and World War Two was Officially Under Way and that began the clock ticking toward the End of the British Empire, Germany with Half of Europe under Soviet Control, Patton Murdered because he Couldn't Keep his mouth Shut and the NWO almost has achieved it's World Communist Goal and the World IS In Real Trouble!!

Brave Rifles? 12000 yankees surrenderd as soon as the Germans showed up? Germans ran out fuel, then the Yanks called in air power to win it. The Yanks deserted in droves in the Hurtgen forest around the same time. One German was worth 10 Yankees.
Who won?
The Germans effectively lost the battle in the first four days when the "elite" SS panzer army couldn't push through the Elsenborn ridge. Read Steven Zaloga's "Smashing Hitler's Panzers". Jerry lost this battle on tactical terms, running out of fuel just came later.
