  • You know that you can actually go and visit Harry Potter's Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Keep in mind, it's not as cinematically magical as it is on screen. Although most props from all eight Harry Potter movies can be viewed at the Warner Brothers Studio or Harry Potter Studio in Leavesden, some of them are in totally different locations and you can actually visit them. So, join us and let's take a tour.
First, Christ Church College served as the setting for many Harry Potter scenes, particularly the Hogwarts entrance. The staircase was used to film the famous entrance scene where Professor McGonagall first meets Harry, Ron, Hermione, and all first-year students. Here you can also see Hogwarts' dining hall. It's not the real one though; they copied and rebuilt this hall somewhere else, but still you can see the resemblance.
Our next stop is the restricted Hogwarts Library section. It is, in fact, located at the Bodleian Library, in Duke Humfrey's Library, which is also at the University of Oxford. It's restricted in real life too, and you have to pay for a private tour to get inside. Don't forget to visit Divinity School; this location was used as the infirmary room in the Philosopher's Stone movie. The same place where Ron has a dance lesson with Professor McGonagall. While still at this university, you don't want to miss a chance to go to New College at Central Oxford, which was also filmed in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, specifically the cloister and the courtyard.

Next, Harry Potter's first broomstick-flying lesson scenes were shot at the outer bailey area of Alnwick Castle in Northumberland. Northumberland is basically England's northernmost county. Around 300 miles or 480 km away from Oxford. Take a note of how similar that gate is. The inner courtyards and baileys were used to depict the daily activities of Hogwarts students and staff. The outer bailey is the place where Harry Potter learns the Quidditch rules too.
Remember when Ron's eat slug curse backfired at Hogwarts' quad courtyard? It was filmed at the Garth inside Durham Cathedral. You'll be surprised to learn that this cathedral was also used in the filming of Avengers: Endgame. The Nave appears in the scene in which Thor and Rocket travel back in time to visit Asgard.
Gloucester Cathedral is also a good place to visit. Gloucester Cathedral was used for a number of shots in the Harry Potter movie franchise, largely for Hogwarts corridors. For example, it was used for the first time for new Gryffindors to walk down Hogwarts corridors.
For another Hogwarts classroom experience, you can go to Lacock Abbey, a small village in Wiltshire, west of London. Try exploring this village; you'll notice some spots here were actually set in many Harry Potter films, including Hogwarts' corridor and classroom, and that one room where Harry Potter discovers the Mirror of Erised.
If you want to go to Hogsmeade train station in real life, it is actually located at Goathland Station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Of course, you might as well visit more places around this beautiful county, including the town and the breath-taking scenery there.
You know you can visit Hagrid's hut in Glencoe, Scotland. Hiding on the hills above Torren Lochan in Clachaig Gully. Well, the hut is gone now, but you can still enjoy the scenery. While you're there, you should consider visiting other places such as Victoria Street in Edinburgh, the Glenfinnan Viaduct to see the Jacobite steam train, and Loch Shiel Highland.
