    9:39 The flutes on the "artistic side" do serve a practical purpose - they make for nice decorative wall hangers. 😉

    I was playing at a very informal jam Friday night. I brought in my flute, then discovered there was a another flute player in the room. She was interested in my 40 year old flute. She claimed that flutes were tuned differently back then, particularly in the right hand notes. She asked to play mine to demonstrate, and said, just as she thought, two notes were out of tune. I played a D scale on my flute, then up and down D to G and I couldn’t hear anything out of tune. She said that because of my familiarity with my instrument, I was automatically correcting to the correct pitch with my embouchure by ear. While I know there are variations between flutes, I haven’t heard of a shift in tuning in all new flutes. Have you? Was she thinking about flutes with split E?
    This woman was extremely high, by the way.

      This is a great comment and question. Actually, flutes weren't necessarily 'tuned different', but there were a couple of things that were changed to help flutes play more in tune more easily. For example, the head joints are different length nowadays. It's good though because we have more versatility (especially if we have to perform with another instrument who cannot tune quite right). Haha, was she 'high-level flutist' or like 'high'? Love it. She's kinda right.. and kinda not. Good conversation anyway. :) -Rebecca

    Hi next year i'll be taking my grade 8 abrsm exams. Do you recommend upgrading to an intermediate level flute? I am currently using a student level one. Is there any major difference in terms of sound quality that may get me more marks for the exam? Is the upgrade really worth it?

    • @LearnFluteOnline
      @LearnFluteOnline  6 лет назад

      Nope the flute can only play as well as you do, so the only way it could make a difference is if you feel that your flute is underperforming to your abilities. This is true for any flute as long as it is in perfect working condition. Good luck! ~Rebecca

    I started up as an alto sax player, then played mainly flute in college with acoustic guitar voice combos , now a tenor sax player rock and blues, but am drifting back into flute for celtic stuff. I just have my one flute that I got in 1975 for $100 and haven't put anything into it, except a lot of time. There was a time in college that I played about 8 hours a day. Recently I went into my local music store and tried some more expensive flutes. I liked a B foot because I could handle it, and maybe it's more the range of a sax. But the open holes were driving me crazy, and I put the plugs back in. I know they are supposed to sound brighter, but I'm from an era were everyone expected me to sound like Ian Anderson. How long would it take me to adjust to open keys? Too bad I couldn't try a split E flute because 3rd octave E has long been a barrier to me but then I easily go up to G or A. I always avoided 3rd E in improvising.

      Super question here about open-hole flutes. Actually, you can keep the plugs in forever if you'd like. There will be no difference in your sound. But, if you'd like to do a little more with slides and cool stuff (like Ian Anderson) then you'll want to take the plugs out one at a time. Focus on one finger position at a time. You can take months to go through this process.
      Also, I like to keep the last plug in because I have a crooked finger. Don't feel like you're having a problem if you decide to keep a plug or two in. It's totally fine. Many professionals are turning back to closed hole flutes nowadays. I have loads of sax players learning here at Learn Flute Online. We have been focusing on Irish music during this month of March. It's been fun! Come join us.

    I just rented (option to buy) a John Packer (JP) flute. Model# JP011. Do you know this brand? If I do buy it the price would probably be about $400.00. What do you think (especially about the quality as a beginner's flute). Thank you.

      Hi, oh I wish I was familiar with the John Packer brand. If it's new and you have a store backing you, then I would think it'll be just fine... If you keep it in really good condition. I show you specifically how to do this inside LearnFluteOnline.com. learnfluteonline.com/flute-knowledge-base/

    I have a Gemeinhardt flute.how would i know that the level of it? Is it beginner or intermediate

    • @LearnFluteOnline
      @LearnFluteOnline  4 года назад

      Search it for numbers. The model numbers are usually on a plate at the beginning of the mechanism on the body. The Gemeinhardt brand is a common 'band' brand, and are usually the student level. You can pick up other clues by checking to see if it has a B foot and open holes (if it does then it's most likely a higher model). Hope this helps. :) -Rebecca

    I don't mean to be obnoxious but you need to work on the pacing of your speech. The ratio of useful information from your words are dauntingly low. Like for example: "super super low" is unuseful piece of information. instead you should point out a price below x mount would be considered "super super low" and perhaps in your professional opinion, a beginner must avoid.
