I hired a professional organizer to help me put my whole house (1250 sq ft) together after move. I had so much stuff coming from my larger house. By the time she was done, I had my sewing room, kitchen, and master closet put together and beautiful. It all cost me $800. I used my own containers and we got rid of a lot of stuff.

I’ve done this with a decorator and what helped with the cost the most was just choosing cheaper products than what she recommended. So I got the layout and links to products but knew I could get the same thing for a fraction of the cost at tjmaxx or Walmart or target. So I think it’s totally worth it and you can save money by just getting cheaper look a like products !!!

I have been working with an organizer for years and together we have accomplished a lot. I was a prolific shopper for many years but never got rid of anything so I was overflowing with stuff. I don't buy like I used to and I know where things belong and I put them away when not in use. It is wonderful to feel proud of your space and not embarrassed to have people come over. I highly recommend using an organizer if you have trouble getting motivated or just don't know where to start.

We moved into our current house on February 2021. I STILL have boxes to unpack. We’ve moved a lot and I’ve have the house unpacked, photos on the walls, everything where it goes easily! I am absolutely flummoxed with this house! It hasn’t helped one wit that my wonderful, dear husband has “helped” when I’ve had to travel! I hired a professional organizer for $95 an hour, with a three hour minimum. The only thing I needed her for was paperwork. It took about five hours because I had about six bankers boxes of documents going back years, and a lot of it was very emotional stuff. There’s an organization that certifies professional organizers who deal with people with hoarding problems and she not only organized my things, the way she worked trained me in organizing myself. I have had about one file drawer of paperwork at any one time and I’ve never regretted it.

It's understandable, but try to think organically and naturally, there are zones in every kitchen and in time it will all make sense to you. For example when we do kitchens dinner plates drinkware salad bowls Etc are always placed as close as possible through the sink and the dishwasher, most people do that naturally. The same goes for the other zones in your kitchen, for example in your cooking Zone which would be where your stove is you would Place spices, condiments, spatulas and kitchen tools, baking trays Etc all of those things you need handy when cooking including oven mints. In your prepping a Zone which is where you prep food you would need foils Ziploc bags kitchen tools knives Tupperware Etc, if you have kids and you have the space you can make a kids zone, usually it's on the lower cabinet so the kids could be independent, we usually put their kids plates and bowls drink bottles and snacks that they are allowed to access themselves. Depending on the layout of your kitchen near the stove you would also have the pots and pans area. The appliances that do not leave on your counter are usually place this close as possible to your prep area, items that are used less often like for holidays for example, or applying shoes that you use once in a while I usually placed in the least accessible areas either in the back of deep cabinet or on upper shelves that are harder to reach. Basically the best way to do it is think accessibility, whatever you use most has to be in your Prime real estate area, whatever you use less goes up high or behind other items. Create zones based on the way you work in your kitchen. Keep likes with likes, and Corral small items in containers. Things like pasta boxes or peanut butter jars don't need a container they stand on your own, but things like pouches and other items that may fall or make a mess are better kept in containers and it doesn't have to be expensive ones. Also if you have a very deep cabinet especially for spices you would do better if they were contained so that you can pull the whole container out and pick the spices that you need versus having to move all of the spices to get what's in the back. As you start to live and use your kitchen you will find the way that works best for you but I hope this couple of tips helped. :-)

A playroom seems a lot easier to organize than a new kitchen. $200 for a kitchen organizing map seems well worth it to me, but that’s also because a well-functioning kitchen makes life easier. For a lot of jobs, it’s just nice to have an extra set of hands to make the work go more quickly.

Kallie, do you think this process would be more beneficial during your kitchen remodel? My husband and I are currently building our forever home and I'm wondering if I should look into this service before we order cabinets so we can get the most out of our space? I feel like I'm a pretty good organizer too (especially when it comes to my kitchen), but this intrigues me. I'm really liking the idea that the organizer knows what product would fit my stuff and space. Finding the right size is the most painful part of the process IMO. I also don't have anything other than a Walmart near by so buying products is a huge pain. Thanks!

I’m a kitchen designer and I would 100% recommend having someone, whether it be an organizer or a kitchen designer, help you with the process of designing the space to best function for you. An organizer may be a less expensive option, but a good kitchen designer can help you design your cabinetry to accommodate your needs. Or you may want to use a combination of the 2.

My husband has been a cabinet maker for 50 years. He’s built us new kitchens in 3 houses during those years. One thing I learned a long time ago, if you can afford to buy or have made frameless cabinets, you will get 33% more useable space. The cabinets are also stronger than face frame cabinets. Last year he built our final one. This one has as many drawers as I could get in my space. I mean, lots of BIG drawers. 9 of them. And I bake quite a bit so I have a cabinet with a lift for my Kitchenaid mixer. 3 of my drawers right next to it are 42” wide and hold all my baking stuff. There are professional kitchen organizers that can help design your kitchen and then an organizer can help with organizing your stuff. We spent 4 years designing our new kitchen before we built any of it. I had lived with the existing kitchen for 14 years and knew what I wanted and needed by the time my husband began fabricating. Good luck!

Yes I have hired both good and bad organizers. Both came to my home and thankfully worked with what I had. Idea was to take away items I no longer wanted or could use. Got good suggestions. The bad one didn't listen to my needs, placed items to be taken away in their box before we discussed the items. I saw this and caught the items before they left the house. When an organizer comes to your home expect to pay more, but they do any heavy lifting so you don't have to and haul away donation stuff. Always watch what is going on. The good organizer took photos of every item leaving the house. With in two or three days sent the photos and donation receipts. I will hire again after my remodeling is completed.

It would be great to have the plan, then do a section at a time as I could afford it, as Kallie mentioned as a possibility. One advantage of this approach would be tackling a big job in smaller chunks. Not many people would be starting with a totally empty space, so that would make it feel more manageable, not just budget-wise but energy-wise as well. I also imagine you could also find alternatives for some of the items on the supply list that are more budget-friendly and match as far as dimensions and general looks.

Nicely done! Would love to have you include how long it took you to organize everything in total. Organizing takes a LOT longer than most realize, as does figuring out what container should go into each space, shopping, tetrising things into place, etc.. When an organizer does pantries or kitchens for people in person, it takes 1-2 days, depending on the current condition, of course (new like yours takes less time) so the organizer's time is a much higher cost than what you paid. Your kitchen looks beautiful!

I have wondered what it would entail to hire a professional organizer. This is super helpful!

This was a pretty sweet video! Loved that you did this for urself! I hav never used a professional bt one day with a newer bigger kitchen i surely will! For now i am just living thru swooning at all the useful perfection of others kitchens :) i would use a pro in addition to the kitchen for kids room and playroom as well! Could use their keen senses for study area and playroom for sure!

Before watching this video, I'd never have considered hiring an organise. Like you, I'm just finishing a massive kitchen redesign, so I'm tempted. In addition, my bedroom is a complete train wreck, and now I'm thinking about that, too. Thanks for doing the experiment for us!

How interesting! It would have been nice to do this when we redid our kitchen. The cabinets were different and it was overwhelming with all this blank space to figure out what should go where. I like the virtual idea. At this point I'd consider it for our master closet. It is big, with little pre-existing storage.

I’d love to have a professional organizer do our closets. My husband and I share a fairly small master closet. The kids both have those sliding door, awkward closets where there’s a ton of dead space you can’t access easily due to the door orientation. I have no idea what to do in there except stack bins in the dead space.

I still think I would want someone to come help in person and I would also need to throw out a bunch of stuff before hand. I would want the option to buy organizing stuff from somewhere cheaper.

So interesting! I compare it to hiring a decorator for a walk through, or a landscaper. I've learned...both can save you money in the long run, help you not make regrettable mistakes.

i did the same thing recently, hired a Konmari certified professional!
it really speed things up for me, and worth it. i have been an impulse shopper & hoarder for years and 2yrs ago i started decluttering and watching your youtube videos (along with many other minimalist, konmari and decluttering videos) but my progress was really slow...

p.s. it was about usd50/hour, she quoted me 20hours initially, but i was able to do it in 12hours because i DIYed a lot in between the sessions and completed her "homework" on my own :p

Did you look into built-in solutions? I feel like 50% of organizing is making up for poor designs. I have bought SO many organizational things over the years, I probably would've saved money if I had paid upfront for a custom kitchen cabinet design. Of course there are some things that still need to be purchased like food containers and the like, but something I love about older homes is that they have a lot of built in features like knife racks, lazy susans, pull-out utensil holders, custom inserts for pans, etc.

The place I need to have organized the most is the homeschooling stuff. I have 5 kids spread out 13 years, so I literally have materials for every grade! I wonder what I could accomplish with an entire day and $1000 worth of cubes or adjustable bookshelves…. I still have to overcome the procrastination issue though.

Me *is a near extreme minimalist* .... I have a junk box?
My clothes all have their own homes, I always make sure my shirts are hung, I pull the hanger from the shirt I'm wearing that day and put it in front, short to long to long sleeve. My pants go in the order I will wear them that week...
Books are in size order. Cups in size order, and I got my ear plugs (earrings) and crystals all organized in containers from JoAnns.
That's it. That's all I got. That's my stuff. Besides my computer.
Ooh and I keep a bujo to write down my numbers.

Thank you for the video. It was very helpful and it actually convinced me to hire a professional for organizing when it’s time to do it.
I have one question: I see that this was done very recently and so, I am not sure if you have started to get a sense of how functional it is in a day to day life. I would really like to see a follow up video with your experience for couple of months.
Functionality, something that I spend more time trying to organize in a way that I have the most used stuff very handy which is necessary for quick access of things (in kitchen), especially as you have little time to cook with kids at home.
Thank you for the video again.
    I really like your videos😃

Well I'm pretty sure we would need the whole house organized tbh 😅 but I think it's the kitchen that's causing the most headache. We don't have much storage there and are a family of 5... The biggest problems I have are the cupboards highest up directly under the ceiling, because I don't reach it easily so I don't want to put things there that we need often or are heavy, and the corner cabinet because everything just gets shoved in there and it's a mess.
