Politics is the name of the culprit. Ganguly was close to Dalmia and Greg Chappel was specifically brought by Ganguly to imporve the fitness quality of Indian players including himself. BCCI regime changed and new Chairman wanted Ganguly to go away. Made media leaks, created rifts between captain and coach and then captain was fired.
Same thing happened in Kumble and Kohli controversy. Kumble fought with BCCI to increase salary of support staffs and reserved players in central contracts. BCCI made leaks in media pressured Kohli to either behave or leave. Kumble and Kohli are still amicable.
Ganguly and Kohli controversy. Ravi Shastri was replaced by Dravid by Ganguly and without asking Kohli. Kohli was not playing well under captaincy pressure so when he told BCCI to be relieved from T20 after worldcup. Kholi was asked to focus ofln test cricket and give up on whiteball altogether. Kholi did not take this well and fought with BCCI. BCCI forced Ganguly take the call to releive him and so he did. When Ganguly wanted players welfare, he was relieved because all these political netas and their son want is power and money. Players are just commodities for them.

At the national level any sport is a professional sport. And if people like Greg Chappell treat teams like school kids then no one will tolerate. Our players have accomplished much more than Chappell. He can suggest minor adjustments based on his experience. But he cannot ill treat anyone and no person with self respect will allow that. And our players were and are extremely good in their skills and they have every right to hold their self respect.

Don’t know how old you are to remember the details of the era. To cast a judgement on the players is so dumb. These same players were finalists in World Cup before Greg became their coach. It seems that you didn’t pay much attention to manager talking to media about players. What remains private then? Australia also had disaster coaches - Justin Langer was one driven out. Shane Warne’s nemesis John Buchanan hasn’t come to your mind that he was driven out from Kolkata Knights Riders after getting them to sixth position. Buchanan was the mgr who had won ashes, world cups, champions trophy but he like Greg, had a typical Aussi coaching manual of rattling players. Though, his like Greg’s justification was to push players out of their comfort zone. Besides, Greg wanted to unsettle captain led cohesion as then players will always go to captain rather then to him. So, he removed Ganguli as he was not scoring enough runs. Now he could plant his captain on the team Dravid. For a while, Dravid was seen as stooge and guy who played for coach rather than india. You have to ask which teaching method is more rewarding- one who encourages or one who criticises. Being a parent , I tried second method of criticising my sons while teaching them and saw myself failing as the sons only shone under someone else who encouraged them with softer approach. Every situation demands different things. India’s situation is vastly different as there is more media focus on cricket and players here. So, you have to be very circumspect before media.

@@elamcyril no, it is not big headedness of players as same players reached to the final of World Cup under John Write and it is not nostalgia clouding people’s judgment as Greg Chappell had an agenda to make himself supreme. He didn’t establish rapport to take the maximum out of players. He was forcing his judgment. If you ignore the intellect of the player and think you are better judge than every player, then player won’t be convinced. At the heart of coaching, one needs to convince the player rather than letting them feel forced. John write excelled in that and so also Gary Kirsten while the players almost remained the same.

The difference between Australian & Indian style of plying are
      1. Fearless playing or playing without fear to lose.
      2. Playing within the limitation of pitch with skill and team work.
      3. Assured compactness of the team.
We should not divide our opinions rather than work on real flaws.
When Greg was in the help, Australia never won the WC. It was the Allen Border who started to make things happen. Greg was selected as coach and never wanted to be confined himself to the coaching so setting narratives.

Chappel didn't want Sachin & Sehwag? Where the hell does that come from? Chappel absolutely wanted them & but he wanted to do things differently with them, like he wanted Sehwag to move his feet more while practicing so he would be better in overseas swinging conditions, Sehwag straight up arrogantly refused, it is admitted by Sehwag himself "proudly" in an interview He wanted Sachin to take the middle order no4 spot so the Indian middle order would be even stronger in ODIs. Sachin was showing unwillingness to do that.
Also yes in terms of fitness he wanted them to improve, there's nothing wrong with that. Most of those seniors just wanted an yes man & didn't like someone ruffling their feathers.
Truth is most of those older players had as much ego & stubbornness as someone like VK would have in modern time, but nostalgia has painted those guys over the years as some egoless & selfless saints.

@@elamcyril U need to read the autobiography of SACHIN TENDULKAR where he clearly mentioned that before 2007 world cup CHAPPEL even went to his house to offer him captaincy but SACHIN clearly refused. SACHIN very rarely comment on any controversial topic but he always tried to adapt himself in any role for team's success and he took a millions of criticism on him without any reaction. But a toletant person him also could not bare CHAPPEL's doubt about senior cricketers commitment. In fact, even in AUSTRALIA, CHAPPEL's own country, great cricketers like STEVE WAUGH and few others were completely against CHAPPELs theory. CHAPPEL actually could have been better used in sports science rather than as a coach. He had great knowledge about the game but his experimental theory on each and every match did not allowed any player to settle down. Why should an all time great opener like SACHIN was asked to bat on middle order inspite of middle order batsman like RAHUL, LAKSHMAN, YUVRAJ was there and why a naturally attacking batsman like SEHWAG was asked to stop his natural game. Buit still SACHIN left his ego and batted on middle order for few matches and SEHWAG tried to change his natural game to an extent but it created disaster. Players line SACHIN, GANGULY, SEHWAG lost their natural game. Even for GANGULY, CHAPPEL thought he had nothing left. But GANGULY made a historical come back and proved CHAPPEL completely wrong. I think CHAPPEL even more than winning matches tried to satisfy his own experimental attitude. Again. fitness is an very important aspect of the game which is used to coupe up with hard work physically but success comes through talent and efficiency.

Starting from Jhonty Rhodes, Azhar, Ponting, Yuvraj, Kaif and Ravindra Jadeja , everybody had or has similar technic. Momentum and squatting position, with balance is the most important aspect of a good close-in fielder. What makes Kaif different is his momentum building brought him almost at 15 - 20 yards from the batsman yet he emerged as a fielder wo saved atleast 10 runs a match. Apart from his contributions towards the wickets 10 runs a match is a huge deal.

No team prior to WC2003 except the mighty West-Indies in 75 and 79 had a continous winning streak till the final and India was the first one along with Australia facing facing them in WC2003 Final. Eventhough we lost the final, the team was a strong and confident team eyeing for the next one to win and posed a threat to Australia's hattrick in 2007. Greg Chappel came in 2005 with the mission to breach this confidence and the team spirit and he suceeded completely to do so within his tenure of 2 yrs demolishing the indian cricket. The result was visible in WC2007 which no indian would like to recall.

It sounds like Chappell was a bit too dominating as a coach and a bit of egoistic person. He was trying to focus more on the strengths of each player as opposed to their weaknesses. Maybe because he didn't like the attitude of players in that team who were running high on confidence at that time. He probably saw their self-confidence more on the arrogance side, and hence he used to find mistakes in their strengths.
