There are a lot of us, which includes all kinds of opinion, but I want to believe we all love their music.
Nightwish has extreme range in styles. You won't hear another Ghost Love Score because their mastermind on keyboards, Tuomas, is super creative.
You'll hear songs in style of jazz, music theater, metal, balad, symphonic metal, jig, folk... Variety is really not the problem.
How I view fandom? People who love varied, replayable music, who can find perfect song for whatever mood they find themselves in. Bandmembers are cool people who love interacting with each other and the audience. Composer and current singer are among the best in history of music (doesn't matter how pompous this sounds).

I think it should be said here that Floor Jansen, quite new in the band (about 10 months) in this concert, brought a new creative breath, re-interpreting the songs from the existing repertoire, recorded in the studio with the first 2 female singers, Tarja Turunen and Anette Olzon. You can see it as an evolution, in which the Past becomes the seeds of the Present.
I am glad that you had the patience and understanding to continue exploring in this direction, new subscriber here, in the hope that you will continue. I even suggest you to do some double reactions, first the studio version, then the live version (in the same reaction), you will be able to see the evolution more easily this way. I don't think you will have negative comments.
    All the best, from Romania!

Stick with what works for you. Nightwish are amazing live, thats why loads of people will say only do live versions. But Nightwish also release instrumental versions of their studio tracks if you look for them, so you can listen without vocals (if you wanted to!?). Ghost Love score is only song #13 of 15 on this concert, if you dive down this rabbit hole on the channel or in private, you'll find the keyboard player Tuomas is called The Metal Mozart for a good reason. Maybe for some of the shorter songs, you could do studio and live combined reviews? just an idea. Nightwish has been around since 1996, so they have a huge catalog of about 120 songs over three different singers, Floor being the latest. Gabriel follows all these channels when they review Nightwish for the first time and has an excellent live list, with links to follow so people dont get slowed down versions or not so good live recordings. Personally i'd love you to tackle "Seven Days to the Wolves" - studio is great, but the energy at the end of the live version from Wembley has to be seen to be believed. Great stuff, great review! Subscribed :) (PS - if you do The Poet and the Pendulum or The Greatest show on earth from Nighwish, please research the songs first, they will hit 10x harder if you know the meaning behind those songs... they are 14 and 24 minutes long those two, so maybe wait a while before tackling those until you know the band a bit more?)

Personally, I enjoy both the album versions and the live versions of Nightwish's songs. If you want to hear all the musical layers that build a Nightwish song, the best way to do so is to listen to the album version. The live versions are just the cherry on top. They are so good live, it's the full experience that blows you away. The same goes for the song I suggested before (The Greatest Show On Earth). The live version is fantastic, a spectacle. However, if you want to hear all the nuances, you need to listen to the album version. There is so much to take in, I think you'll love both the album and the live version.

Commenting before I even have seen the reaction: Back in 2004, when the album Once was released, I immediately loved the whole album, and Ghost Love Score found it's place as my personal No 1 for many years. I saw Nightwish on that tour, and the live version back then with the original singer Tarja convinced me, that it cannot become any better. For many years. That was until 2018, when I heard the version from Wacken 2013 for the first time. Me, a grown man of almost 50 years, cried like a baby.

There is nothing wrong with the studio version of this song. People who say that have started to listen to Nightwish after Floor came along. They are not used to either Tarja or Anette. But the live version with Floor is making this song even better. The fact is that Nightwish is a live band. They sound better live then in studio.

My thinking exactly, in terms of them being a live band. While their studio work is excellent, they clearly take it up a notch when feeding off the energy of a crowd. I also feel like a lot of their material has fallen victim to overproduction. It's just too polished for my liking. I've always had the utmost respect for artists that can bring it live, even if they music isn't to my taste. Also, IMO, if you suck live, then you suck, period. I too grew up on the artists of yesteryear who didn't have the advantages today's artists do. No pitch correcting software, no computers to generate a "band" sound, and my god, if you got caught lip syncing, you better start ducking because every beer cup in the place was about to get launched. I had the pleasure of seeing classics like Aerosmith, who are amazing live artists, to the mispleasure of....well, I won't name names, but suffice to say, I could have stayed home and put on a CD to hear the same thing, and saved a lot of money. Hell, even groups like the Backstreet Boys bother to sing live, so there's really no excuse other than lack of talent and/or consistency.

Because the Wacken version is so popular, the algorithm "boosts" reactions with that version, so Nightwish Army is more likely to get recommended Wacken reactions. Since GLS is normally the first reaction to the band, it generally means that RUclips almost accidentally recommends the beginning of a reactor's journey.
Similarly (or in contrast), video game "Let's Play" videos get the game finale or the "big twist" episodes boosted because more people tune in or skip ahead for those episodes. I watch a lot of Mass Effect playthroughs, and frequently I first discover somebody's playthrough when RUclips waits until they _finish the series_ before recommending the finale of Mass Effect 3, when I really would prefer they tell when a Let's Player is _beginning_ their ME journey.

No problem here with listening to the studio version then the live one as it makes for an interesting contrast.
There is a DVD produced from this concert so if you just want to listen to the music without the video, their live DVDs are so well produced, they can rival the studio versions in production values.
About the fanbase, well there are fans of Nightwish and there are fans of just a particular singer. Tarja Turunen left the band in 2005 in the midst of a very dramatic soap opera relationship ending and unfortunately 18 years later some of her fans still haven't quite gotten over it. There's always going to be some drama in the comments section when the studio version from one of the previous two singers is aired, vs. a Floor Jansen live performance, so learn to expect that.
About Floor Jansen, well there's still tons to discover. With a typical singer we hear one or two songs and we have pretty well heard most of what they have to offer. With Floor we have to go 20 or 30 songs deep and will still not have heard all she can do. She's referred to as the female Freddie Mercury. She is an expert storyteller and will shift her movements on stage to fit the song. In this performance, she was fairly static. In the 2018 performance of "I Want My Tears Back" she is dancing all over the stage. One thing to note is that she ranges from death metal growls and screams, to opera/classical/musical theatre. She can shift from a false cord growl to a belt or head voice -- on the same breath! She has currently released a pop album and she is currently touring while five months pregnant. Back in the fall she had breast cancer surgery and was back on stage within a few weeks. It's worth visiting her RUclips channel as there's lots of content worth viewing.
"Romanticide" and "Storytime" from the same concert is usually next on the agenda. If you want to listen to the album version first, be aware that "Romanticide" is with the first singer and "Storytime" is with the second one, Anette Olzon. At the Wacken concert Floor had only been with the band for 10 months so she was singing the discography of the previous two singers. Floor adds elements to the songs that don't exist in the album versions, .e.g. the entire vocal ending of Ghost Love Score.
The music written by Tuomas Holopainen for Floor tends to be more complex and challenging, so expect the later music to have a bit different feel.

Well summarized, I'd only add 2 things:
There are no two similar Nightwish songs, all of them has some unique quirk (others would say like "the rabbit hole has no bottom")
This song was written for Tarja Turunen, the first singer, you can check her interpretation from 2005, if you want. But the composer-keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen is a bit perfectionist, he's continuously changing the songs. For example the studio version of this song had less brasses, different sound engineering than this version. Interpretations of Tarja and Floor are also very different. It's not a coincidence that this version is more mature than the original and more people prefer this (the original is also good, just this one is better).

The thing about this version is what Floor added to the song. The song, as you said...YES was REALLY good. She changed it...and made it GREAT. What happens with GLS as it's composed, so both the studio version and her is 17 key changes back and forth between 5 different keys (D minor, F minor, F major, B flat minor, G Minor)...and throughout the song...you NEVER get a proper harmonic resolution V (or V7) to the tonic a SINGLE. PHRASE...Until the end. And that's what makes the end so satisfying. Toumas actually didn't put Chord V anywhere in there at all...until that last key change when you get a proper 5/1 (tonic) resolution 3 times. That makes that final section Awesome in the studio version. Then Floor got a hold of it. And she understood the musical theory behind it so clearly that she knew, as she did in early rehearsals, that it needed something ... BIG.
That a#/G♭ 5 she absolutely NUKES at the end isn't at all a different resolution. It's just different than what you're used to hearing.
You caught it. "she knows" "I get t now." You got it.

Tarja was the first singer. Great voice, but every song was operatic. That's too much. She has a great solo career. Floor can sing any style, has mountains of charisma, she can sing, growling do opera in the same song! The fans love her! Annette, the second singer has a beautiful poppy voice, and has a great solo career too. You wouldn't see Tarja or Annette windmill either. She smiles as does the whole band. They're actually having fun on the stage! Tuomas the keyboardist is the mastermind who composes the music and lyrics. 82ooo people there this night!

Thing about Floor Jansen as a vocalist is how EMOTIONALLY involved she makes you.
She is a vocal nerd, by the way.
I take nothing away from Tarja, a great singer. (Notice the difference in how i describe them), but she doesn't invoke the emersive emotional involvement. Floor is able to do so effortlessly.
This, I feel, is the difference.
I agree with you on the total experience emersion of the album. It's obvious the coral component has been toned down in the live as Floor actually sings some of what was coral on the album and didn't include (or was equally mixed with) Tarja.
I'm a nerd like yourself and appreciate what you are bringing to the table.

Don't worry about the fanbase. Most of them are very friendly and intelligent, but there are some fanatics with specific opinions. Mostly because some singer or version means a lot to them and sometimes they feel offended about those feelings that you could not know. Any song from this concert would be a perfect next one. Live they bring something extra. Seeing them live is an incredible experience and has always been.

Okay, serious now. I'm a Hardrock & Metal fan for about 50 years now. There was a lot of rubbish bands, but also too a few outstanding bands. And Nightwish is of course one of them. And of course "Ghost Love Score" is one of the most requested Songs to react. There must be a reason for that.
Maybe it's the history of this song in 2012 and 2013, when Floor Jansen kicked in for Anette Olzon just in the middle of a world tour. It was clear, that she steps in for Anette while touring (because of Anettes pregnancy), but the change was a little sooner than planned. So she had to learn the setlist a little bit earlyer than expected, mostly in the plane or - while touring - in the tourbus. And then there was this song called "Ghost Love Score", wich was her favorite song. She would die for singing it. So she and the guys develop the Floor-version of that song. While touring!
And yes, we all followed the tour on RUclips (Mobile phone cams, you know), and whenever a new song kicked in the setlist, it was partytime!
And when the first version of GLS was presented, well, the rest is history. It literally blows everyone away!
It's nice to see, that the fans celebrating the song. Sometimes i'm a little amused by the enthusiasm, the fans shows, but, seriously, i can't judge them, because i'm the same Fanboy sometimes... 😉

On the other hand, I enjoyed your review of the album because only listening feels like reading a book. If you ever want to get the feeling of reading a book while listening😂, go under the shower while listening to Revamp, Floor’s previous band, I’m addicted to that voice. Start with “No honey for the damned” and you will bleed forever❤
This last one will be understood by the Nightwish army as the lines you can see the audience singing (not Floor) are:
My fall will be for you - My fall will be for you My love will be in you You were the one to cut me So I’ll bleed forever

    Greetings.
First, "the crowd knows what's coming."
    No, they had no idea.
You see, singer Floor Jansen (yan•sen) took over vocals in the middle of their tour on October 1st 2012 in Seattle, Washington.
Anette Olzon was fired and that's who the fans were expecting to see.
For the remainder of the tour which lasted until September 2013, every Nightwish fan got a very awesome and unexpected surprise.
After this reaction, wouldn't you agree?
The last belts in the song aren't even on the studio album because Floor put them there while doing sound checks one day in South America, and the band decided they would end the song that way since.
Yes, Nightwish used the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London's The Metro Voices, and Young Musicians Children's Choir since their first album and the tracks are used as backing tracks.
Floor has made those songs better than the studio albums.
She is one of the most versatile singers you will ever hear.
She is classically trained and took musical theater.
This video is more of an introduction to Floor Jansen as it is Nightwish, but welcome to symphonic metal nonetheless.
You're going to love this journey. The rabbit hole goes deep, so buckle up and enjoy the ride.
Hope you stick with the Nightwish reactions.
Gabriel should be here, follow his lead.
Thank you for the video, reaction and comments. Stay safe and stay blessed.

Okay, after watching fully both this and the review video, can I say thankyou for taking such a considered view of both versions of the song. Its not often that we hear good, honest feedback both about the song and clear, concise analysis at the same time. Only the good vocal coach reactions tend to give that and I'd say this is up there with them. Secondly, thankyou for shaking off all the BS around the replies to the first review video and giving this version its chance to shine. Both are good, both are worthy of anyone's time to listen to/watch them, they stand shoulder to shoulder as a moment in Nightwish history. Finally you mentioned the great concerts you've watched in the past and imho Nightwish Wacken 2013 is up there with the best. The stars aligned that night to create a spectacle few will ever surpass, especially given that Floor had only been with the band for around 10 months (and wasn't even a confirmed full time member at the time) and not one single song had been written for her vocals, she had to adapt and hone every single one to her voice. Even if you don't react to any more songs on your channel, Wacken 2013 in its entirety is well worth a watch just for your own enjoyment, it really is that good.

This is only ten months into Floor Jansen joining Nightwish mid tour. One of the first performances in Europe as she joined in the USA leg of tour taking over from the second singer who didn't perform this as she had a different vocal style. Most of the 82,000 crowd had never heard Floor sing with Nightwish. 15 songs and she nails every one that she sings by both previous singers. The studio version that you heard featured the predominantly operatic Tarja Turunen so does not have the variety of vocal styles. As you watch more of this concert you might appreciate how much Floor brought to Nightwish.

Totally understand your prospective and opinion. As I said to my comment to the original song video, Nightwish is one of the few bands in this world that sounds amazing live. Maybe even better than the album, due to the musicality, tightness and energy that they provide. That didn't happen from day one back in 1996 when they've formed. In my opinion that developed through years and mainly the last 10 when they hired the female G.O.A.T. Floor Jansen. Head voice, chest voice, growling, belting, operatic style, rock, pop, death metal, even Disney songs in seven different languages. Her stage performance, her humble character, her creativity launched the band to an other level. All Nightwish army would be more than excited to enjoy a full journey with you, because your knowledge, your vibe and positive energy is amazing. If you wish to do that (maybe once every week or two weeks) the absolute best way is to follow the general's Gabriel list. If you are interested only to see 4-5 songs you have to pick some masterpieces of the band such as:
The greatest show on earth (with the scientist Richard Dawkins)
The poet and the pendulum, Song of myself and maybe the incredible cover of the phantom of the opera. Since you don't really know the band, I strongly suggest you dive fully in this huge rabbit hole. Tuomas Holopainen (keyboard) is a composer that gonna inspire you and give you new perspectives and angles in creativity and songwriting. The choice is yours of course. Thank you for your great reaction and analysis. Greetings from Nightwish army Greece department 🇬🇷 🤘

This is the first of the trilogy of Magnum Opuses. Poet and the Pendulum is the second and is concerning the loss of the first singer due to internal strife and the fallout from the community. Finally, The Greatest Show on Earth. I know how you feel about live performances, but you really need to see the live versions with Floor. Nightwish is odd in that the majority of times, the live versions are better than the studio versions. There is an energy that adds different dimension. There have been three singers: Tarja--the original--very operatic, Annette--second singer--more popular rock vocals, and Floor-latest singer and the instrument that Tuomas has always needed--who does pretty much whatever she wants. We call her a Metal Valkyrie :)

Floor is the third female lead singer in Nightwish and the only one who can perform this song like this. The song is old, and especially after Floor joined the band they have been developing it further. And because Floor is one of the most versatile singers I know, she can perform live parts that were originally on backing track and give different parts colors the previous singers could not do (or at least do all those styles).
If there was a studio version done the way it was performed here it might be a good version to listen, but there's no such version. And it would be pointless because there's nothing to improve here. They can pull off all the tricks on stage that they could in studio. Part of this is of course due to the excellent sound engineering both on part of the Wacken festival and the Nightwish crew.

  • @Erfedwe
    @Erfedwe Год назад +3

Great reaction. I am glad you came back to revisit this song. I hope you decide to continue your Nightwish journey!
A few thoughts regarding your comments:
The reason the Wacken 2013 version is held in such high regard is due to the amazing performance, but also the audio and video quality. There are many phenomenal NW performances, but not as many that are as well recorded. Wembley 2015, Tampere 2015, and Buenos Aires 2019 are all awesome as well. From the Tarja error, the End of an Era recording from 2005 is a must.
I would agree that this is not the best live performance of all time, but to be far, this is not even the best live performance by Nightwish. In my opinion, it barely makes the top 10 of NW performances. It is a great sampler platter as to what NW can do, and it serves as a great introduction to the band, but there are better and more epic songs and performance. As I mentioned on your previous video, I have been to several hundred concerts (including Pink Floyd, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Jethro Tull, Santana, Sting, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Grateful Dead, and many others). I have also seen Nightwish live and would put their live show up against anyone.
Lastly, there are times when there is no contest between the studio version and the live version no matter how good the studio version is. Some live performances are simply iconic and become so much more. Examples would be Queen We are the Champions at Live Aid, Janis Joplin Ball and Chain at Monterey, Joe Cocker A Little Help From my Friends at Woodstock, Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb at Earl's Court, Metallica Enter Sandman in Moscow. All great studio songs with absolutely incomparable live versions.
I personally like the comparison between studio and live versions and think it is a cool concept for a reaction/analysis video. I listen to a lot of NW studio recordings. In part, because I have the NW channel added in Pandora and the studio versions are usually what gets played. There are songs that are better suited to each of the 3 lead singers and there are often cool differences in the studio versus live recordings.

Nightwish is always a better experience live. The biggest reason is that Floor, although she sings songs from the previous 7 albums, was not with the band at that time so you would hear the first or second Nightwish singer. The first was operatic and the second was poppy. The first one was your previous listen. They were good, but I prefer Floor. I actually prefer Floor over any other female singer because I have found no one that can match her versatility, power and pitch perfect vocals. She added her own touches to this song including the multi-genre approach, the crowd interaction and of course, that spectacular ending. A little side note. Floor does not sing in a falsetto voice. That is her normal (modal) voice. Her range is C3 to F6 not counting the growling that she has done on a few songs. I enjoyed your commentary and I was also one of those who skipped your previous listen because it was a studio version without Floor. Videos are much more entertaining and you can tell who can really sing without voice enhancements. A lot of bands and singers can't pull it off. 😊🤘 "Storytime" from the same concert would be a nice one for a next reaction and you would get to experience the Dutch Windmill. ruclips.net/video/pvkYwOJZONU/видео.html

I've been listening to Nightwish since the early 2000's, and grew up with mostly studio recordings (with some live), and appreciate it all. The vast majority of reactors seem to go straight to the 2013 performance and never touch the studio stuff, so I really appreciate it when reactors listen to multiple versions, or even just a different version from the most popular amongst the loudest of the fans. People have different tastes and preferences, and want different things from the music, and that's a-okay. It's not a "mistake" or a "disservice" to listen to a different version.

I get what you say about studio versions, but this band is meant to be seen and experienced LIVE. Every song is different yet you know it is them. Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth are amazing compositions that I think you'd enjoy. I think you would enjoy most of them but these two are the other diamonds of the triple crown in my opinion. (Do the live versions) ;)

I first fell in love with the studio version of this song when it came out. But this live version brought it to a whole other level.

2:50 - "Only real fans have never heard the studio version" 😂😂
The intro alone earned a subscription. Thank you for appreciating great music without bothering to pander to the most extreme end of the fanbase. They can enjoy it in their own way, and you in yours.

I really loved both nightwish videos. May I suggest you guys look into Ayreon - the day that the world breaks down I think you guys will have a lot of fun analysing the song

Nightwish is great in studio. But live they are just mindblowing. They keep perfecting and improving after the studio versions.

Hello! Nightwish Army, Midwest USA here. Nightwish is one of the few bands I prefer to hear live. I generally prefer studio productions even with bands as great as Led Zeppelin. But Nightwish....the live captures something. There's magic there. The lead vocalist here is the newest one, Floor Jansen, who is quite possibly one of the greatest voices working today. Gabriel has the Lore and the List, and if he didn't show up on your previous video, he may show up here. I would encourage you to keep looking at the live performances. But you really can't go wrong with a band this great. Keep going! You'll catch on. I have faith in you.

As a Symphonic metal fan i discovered nightwish back in 2005 but it didn't grab me as other bands like HAGGARD or Therion so I didn't consume it up until the reaction scene started and I got to see Floor now with them, I knew her from After forever i went to see them live at Circo Volador. when they where starting

Yes, I think it would be cool to do the studio or lyric versions of their songs then the live versions. A bit different approach than other channels.
    I love this band.
