  • It is not easy to pick a new metal detector. There is so many to choose from. Perhaps this will help you decide if you want to spend 160 dollars or 1500.
    I appogize for not supertuning the tejòn. It would go deeper in disc if setting it right.

    This is by far the best demonstration of how a detector will react to iron close to coins. "Great Job!"

    Good test. Had good results in UK with Laser Rapier, going VERY SLOWLY, with minimal discrim. Deep finds of Roman brooches, hammered Silver pennies & excellent sensitivity to tiny Silver, when a more expensive machine struggled to locate the signals. Just listen for those "awkward, scratchy, faint blips", & never ignore a faint signal that comes & goes, or you may miss that tiny, tiny Silver coin/fragment that is hiding within a miniscule lump of dirt. Best machine used in 14 years ? - XP Goldmaxx, no need for fancy meters, the audio & recovery are that good with a combination of low discrim settings, this machine is, IMO, unbeatable. Spent a day digging everything, on a Roman site, making notes of my interpretation of signal & what was actually found - iron of all shapes & sizes identified EVERY time. Amazing machine. This machine has never fooled me on large, deep iron, & is happy to signal the ropiest small Roman "grot", very close to large iron bolts etc. Tiny, "deep" Gold & Silver sound like a dustbin lid with this machine ( if you move slowly , use low discrim & accustom your ears to what the machine is indicating ).

    I dig everything because I like all relics not just coins. However, I have searched my own back yard multiple times with a couple expensive detectors like my Mine lab and Xp. Recently I bought a $28 antique fisher on ebay (so kids wouldn't break my good detectors )
    To my surprise the same little back yard that has been searched many times over I found 2 pennies, a dime, 2 nickels and an old pocket knife! Along with a few dozen nails and chain link parts. Things that my other 3 detectors never picked up.
    Different machines discriminate differently and read depths differently as you see in this video. Soil conditions also alter readings as well.
    I will say that my At pro is my favorite as far as settings and ease of use.
    Thanks for the reviews and tips! It's always interesting learning more about our hobby.

    Thank you sir for a demonstration well done. I have been detecting now for 3 years and still don't know everything my detector is saying to me. I skip over many potential targets because they don't make sense or are weak signals. Your example of a coin and a nail explains a lot. I started out using a Bounty Hunter Lone Star Pro. Now I have a BH Quick Draw Pro witb an elliptical coil. I have found many coins and a 14k ring and also a silver Rosie dime on a sandy fresh water beach with the BH LSP. That is to say one does not always need to buy an expensive machine to be successful. Though I would like to get my hands on a Gold Bug machine.

I wouldn't get anything less than this model as a beginner. Happy hunting. Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go get it.*

    Good test. Smart way to place the target. The take away for me is that really there is not much difference between a $250 machine and a $2500 machine, particularly once you tune your parameters and get experience with your settings. The basic metal detecting technology is the same - not much has changed in 40 years because not much can change. What distinguishes one cost from the other is how much you do on the reporting end. Bells and whistles. I find just as much as an ACE 150 as I do with AT Pro.

      Just bought my first detector, an AT Pro. My research showed that most of what I was paying for in the middle class of detectors was that waterproofness (is that a word?) of the AT Pro, and the DD coil. Otherwise, it's capabilities are likely similar to the Ace 250. But I'll definitely feel better not having to put a bag over it in Ohio weather.

      +Ben Simpson I have the Ace 250. One thing that is very handy with the AT Pro is the iron audio and the number on the screen can be handy -sometimes- but not always.

I have returned to the placed I hunted with the old $79.00 Tracker and there is nothing left to dig. It is about learning the machine you have. Dig everything until you learn what it is telling you. Let's make it clear. Back to the basic of Science and Technology. So it will more accurate and scientific.
    The most important of Metal detector is, "What Are You Looking For ?".
    No matter what brands it is. Just look at "Output Frequency" of those Detector.
    Here the keys of VLF frequency:
    1 Khz - 8 Khz = RELIC, ARTEFACT.
    9 Khz - 14 Khz = SILVER, COPPER
    15 Khz - 80 Khz = GOLD Nugget
    It's example of some VLF detector were value for money :
    1. Nokta Au Gold Finder (56 Khz).
    2. Fisher Gold Bug 2 (71Khz)
    3. Detect EDS Gold Catch (28Khz).
    4. Garret AT Gold (18Khz).
    5. Xp Deus (4, 8, 12, and 18Khz ).
    6. Tesoro Lobo (17.8Khz).
    7. Fisher CZ21 (5 Khz and 15 Khz)
    8. Teknetics G2 (19 Khz).
    9. Fisher CZ3D (5Khz and 15Khz).
    Etc.....
    All brands is good, all brand has it special ability depend on it .
    Happy hunting guys.
    Stay smart and Good Luck 🌍🚩

      Antipeluru Coy,
      Minelab =
      BBS 1.5 - 25.5 kHz
      FBS 1.5 - 100 kHz
      I believe they have a base frequency though and run on harmonics which is still a great idea, I run 3 different machines, AT Pro, XP Deus & Minelab Sovereign. Each one has its pros and cons, but I look at them as tools of the trade. Since your comment XP have a new coil for the Deus which runs at 15 kHz, 30 kHz or 55 kHz, looks like they are trying to cover all areas!

      You're right bro. XP. They are trying to cover all areas with multi frequency.
      And i agree, they always had a base of frequency.

    Nice video and very informative,i think a lot of detectorist get trapped in the depth game,not realizing other more concerning factors when choosing a detector,the junk that's in most areas is challenging,i know you used iron as an example of maskng the good target because iron is on the bottom end of the metals spectrum,but pulltabs are another problem,i guess like many you must work an area over and over to clean out the junk before you start finding the good targets.

    I enjoyed watching your short film I found it of great content and contained very useful information which could help choose which particular machine is best suited to different detecting scenarios.
    I myself use the deus and tejon and I felt it's fair to say for reasons of balance when using the tejon in iron infested conditions I would never put the discrim above iron and for better accuracy I'd dig a few iffy signals and set the tejon for conditions on site it's possible with the aid of a small concentric coil to get the world's best iron see through with the tejon.
    Good luck and thanks for your films

    I still reccon the ACE 250 is the best price and performance deal if you want to spend under $1000 I sold my White when the ace came out as it was so superior...even against the XP range of detectors and at a fraction of the price...Not to mention the excellent one touch notch for unwanted targets...it couldn't be easier...with two different size heads for the ACE250 I can work anywhere even on wet sand...and the build quality is good too, nothing to go rusty like the torro's. nothing goes haywire and needs servicing...just turn on and start hunting ....for up to 36 hours continouse with 1500ma cells....now that's performance that won't break the bank...

      +Michel Jordaan
      Well actually yes, i would have an ace250 or even two of them and some change.
      Reason ? well, as well as selling detectors I serviced them too!! and the ones that keep coming in time over time for repairs or adjustment would certainly get excluded from my list of detectors that I would choose, and do buy...
      It's a fairly powerful detector and very easy to use, light and the batteries last ages, and has what must be the best notch system of all...scan, press the notch and it's done..and there is a visible reminder on the screen...I have also owned and used very complicated and expensive detectors that are hard to set-up and use correctly, that needs constant adjustments to soil changes etc. The ACE 250 works straight out the box !!!
      OK what don't I like about it...It could have done with a back light, and I have looked inside, there is little space to add a back light without cutting away at the plastic case. though it's easy to add a light in front of the screen that's not what I would prefer. So mine has none.
      When you buy the two head pack I would have liked a second lower pole so that the heads can remain taped to the pole. This is how I modified mine so that a head change is just unscrew the cable connector, slide out the pole and replace it with the second unit complete with smaller head and reconnect the wire. that takes me under 30 seconds. Keeping a correct one loop of the cable at the base of the stem means that changing head angles (when working in buildings to detect on floors and walls etc) wont fatigue the cable where it enters the head...the most common repair and one of the hardest is the cable failing where it enters the head. usually ends up as buying a new head that costs more than an ACE250 !!
      The AT pro is just the latest in this new design from garratt with more buttons, i have retired so no longer get to test them, but its from the same stable. so who wants to give me 1000 dollars so i can buy both and compare them?? or lend me one to test for a genuine honest report !!

    • @colinmartin2974
      @colinmartin2974 8 лет назад +2

      Just to add a little more info, I have looked at the AT PRO revues... does not really do anything that you can't do with the ace 250 except go underwater. Completely !!! Ok that means that they are competing against other submersible detectors that usually cost a lot...but it wont do anything on dry land that you can't do with their ace250...and at such a price difference !! well it's only the people that want to search underwater that will pay for these and at still a very competitive for a wet machine. The only problem that they have created is the use of those crappy battery holders...They had avoided using them on the ace and 250 model by having a fixed battery tray ( so that means REMOVE BATTERYS when not in use or stick to rechargeable accus) that gave no problems ever.. I have left mine ready to go with quality rechargeable's in for over a year and not had a problem, in fact they were still charged enough for a days detecting!!!
      Despite being waterproof the removable battery holders on the AT PRO WILL cause problems as they have done in absolutely every other make of detector !!! So if you are staying on dry land or beaches (even going into 2ft of water) the ACE250 still is the best deal and detector for the money.
      You would be mad to buy anything else,,,

    • @osmia3561
      @osmia3561 8 лет назад

      +colin martin Ok but for an axample, at my local beach there are lots and lots of small pieces rusted iron, from wreckage i guess. It gives awsome bleeps but all over the screen on my ATpro. With my coinmaster(whites) it reads them very good but you cant determine if its crap or not. Mainly because you can hear how long the beeps are you can hear if its a coin or a piece of scrap. BUT thats only on pro mode not the standard ring tones like the ace. And what you said, the pro is waterproof so rain or anything cant stop me. Depth wise its not much of a difference. If you want to dig it all the ace is the way to go. But after a while you want more options to play around with. The only issue ive had was a broken armrest when i was pounding it trough the water..

    used the 1000 dollar machinesand the 250 dollar ones too.
    except for nugget hunting or wet salt sand hunting or water hunting only , you will do fine with a 250 one for allround land hunting .
    and you will have the same amount of fun , potential treasure ,and reliability.

    A theory to one of your last statements on why you find at least as much with the cheaper detectors is maybe that (and I have seen this time and time again) most of the good targets are (not) always going to be out of the range of the cheaper detectors and will be well within their detection depth range so Watchara, I think you're onto something with the cheaper vs. expensive (deeper) detector theory. When I have found 1940s American silver Mercury dimes at just 3", this proves my point about a lot of older sites and (FOR) using very affordable detectors (at) these sites. Soil density can dictate how deep any given coin or other objects will can sink too. This is proven by soil scientists around the world (and) by archeologists. By the way those deeper targets that people dig and dig and dig for (may) just be deep trash. Has happened to me and my MD partner on more than one occasion. Out of curiosity, I decided to keep digging and tough it out (until) I find the source of the signal no matter how hard the soil or how deep it is, a number of times. Turns out that it's often times just a deeply buried piece of trash, (especially) if the signal gets wider and wider with a pinpointer as you go deeper. Now in a house yard, you might better dig these till you find the target and dig up all of them really deep. Why?? It (might) be a cache of old coins or jewelry but may normally be purposely buried in the back yard. (Sometimes) I've heard of caches being found in the front yards too though.

It only has 1 nob that is also the on off switch. I only used it once but I did find a penny on the surface of the dirt in a park where I got the machine. I really want to go out and find stuff more but just was too embarrassed to be seen waving the dector around. Even knowing there is a lot of cool stuff to be found. I'd like to see the same test with DD coils instead of concentric vs DD, the concentric is ok on depth but fails on contaminated ground, you would need the narrow magnetic field that the DD generates to pick up the good signal from the bad.

    Don't forget Watchara. The deeper the detector, the deeper the detection to larger pieces of junk like beer/soda cans at least two feet deep on the beach and with the deeper detectors, they will peg appx. 10-12" deep pieces of shredded or flattened cans at some sites in regular to highly-mineralized soils. Point is, often times flattened/shredded cans will sound like good targets even with a detector with a display and/or blistering depth capability. The i.d. detector's interpretive interface can (often) be fooled as well as the user by the good sound of the very deep trash target. My Tejon will give a false-positive beep on a very deep, larger piece of trash. So there's a (BIG) case to be made in favor of a much less powerful detector at these sites such as a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV. Not a hotrod (8.5" tops on a quarter) and no i.d. screen but (VERY) easy to set up (and) it won't be over-reactive to, nor will it even be able to detect deep trash for that matter so basically, these weaker detectors will beep on the things you manually set it to find and not have to be going after, and wasting time, trying to dig deep trash. I had (MOST) of my luck at average sites using this machine when I got back into detecting a couple of years ago. I first started back in 1989. Never had any performance issues with any of the non screen-i.d. BH's that I've owned/used for that matter. They're VERY versatile without being over hyped on the sensitivity. Take care! Ps; the Deus is (not) as deep as the Tejon with the 10x12" DD coil. The Tejon 10x12" DD can go 13" on a quarter in good soil and would easily find the 7" coin with gobs of power to spare even at 'S Cap' discrimination. The Deus, about 9.5". With the Ace 150 detecting the smaller copper coin and i.d.'ing it as iron, that will throw a (lot) of people off in iron infested sites and after digging a lot of iron at those kind of sites, many people will begin to ignore the iron i.d. since they know it will most of the time (be) iron. (So) (ALL) the old small copper coins that fall into the range of conduction like you used will be ignored by the users of these types of machines. Many manual turn-knob non-i.d. detectors would have detected that coin while (STILL) ignoring most iron except for large iron. (That's) EXACTLY why I don't like screen-type detectors. MOST analog detectors have better recovery speed than the cheaper screen detectors.

    interesting test ...thank-you for showing. i run a deus and its not the magic machine that everyone thinks it is. but it is a very good detector and will cope with most situations out there but you need to learn the machine to get the best out of it.

    I use a Deus for my primary machine and White's Dual Field for the beach; Be interesting to compare PI machines in a similar manner but perhaps more geared to depth and signal quality.

    Buy old used cheap metal detectors and use it as body .Make your own coil and simple circuit to control it. I saw a lot of plans DIY on the net that are simple and anyone can make. Never hunted for metals but my son wants to play with it and go hunting. So started to look on products-the one I like are pricey so I ll make him something.

    What is the price difference in the Ace 150, and the 250? I bet Garrett aint to happy about the fact that they both perform alike, as the detector companies like to charge you $$$ by the depth/capability of the machine.And the fact that I don't see anybody swinging a detector around anywhere(And I have lived in 16 states), you would think the detectors would be cheaper. The prices they put on the detectors are INSANE. It is like they want the machine more than we do.

      I really want the AT Pro because of the way it tells you by number, whether you are digging aluminum or a silver coin, as most cheaper units will just give a silver signal, and I end up digging a aluminum can.

      I am looking at getting my first machine. It was going to be the AT Gold until I heard it was no good in salt water, which I plan on using it about 10-20% of the time. I had minelabs and they are not for beginners. I did not have a good time with those and I found nothing.
      But I think you should ask diffrent people and try out a few diffrent one´s before you buy an expensive model.
      Go for a cheap MD first. They do ok. I promise. You will not miss anything.

    • @woodcarvertom5373
      @woodcarvertom5373  8 лет назад

      +Patrick O'Connor Yes, I got me a Deus. It is very good. But if you are buying your very first metal detector you could just as well buy a 100 dollars Bounty Hunter or what ever. You will find lots of stuff and have fun.
      Like I say in the film - I find just as much with my budget MD. But when I am hunting in places that is very trashy, the deus or Tejón is better.

    • @pgo301
      @pgo301 8 лет назад

      +Watchara Makmee As I've already stated I'll want and need something with a descent reputation and reliability. So I'm not wanting to save any money at the cost of reliability and quality. Certainly there must be a model that meets the range of say $600 or $700.

    • @woodcarvertom5373
      @woodcarvertom5373  8 лет назад

      +Patrick O'Connor Well, there is nothing flimsy about most budget detectors. Not more than the 700 dollars ones.
      They are built with from the same stuff. If you only have 4 hours of metal detecting you will be better of with a simple to use MD.
      My first metal detector was a high end Minelab. I did not understand it and I nerver had any fun with it. I found a beer can. Nothing more in hours of use. I think you should not worry to much about your choise. Most metal detectors from 150 dollars and up are great. Some walmart Bounty Hunters for less than 100 are very good.
      But if you want more, many people go with Garrett AT Pro or Gold. Waterproof and deep and fast. I like that one too.

    • @pgo301
      @pgo301 8 лет назад

      +Watchara Makmee OK, I was really liking the XP Deus because of it's weight and wireless capability plus the breakdown to fit in a suitcase. But I'm certain they all can be broken down into a suitcase. SO, the Garrett Ace 350 looks really inviting and offers great depth, which is important for detecting in land that probably has deeper relics than the United States grounds. This is very important. Plus I don't want to spend too much time learning a sophisticated machine while on a vacation and then loosing that valuable time learning. Thank You for taking the time to explain your reasoning and educating me on the machines. Happy to know also that most machine coils offer nearly the same capabilities.
