  • The FASTEST Ways To Advance Your Career in Commercial Real Estate // The term “pay your dues” was a phrase that I heard over and over again at the start of my career, and to be honest with you, these words always rubbed me the wrong way.
Career growth is not linear and definitely isn't the same for everyone, and just because you have a certain number of years of experience under your belt doesn't necessarily mean anything about what you know or what you can do.
So if you have trouble nodding your head when someone tells you to "wait your turn", and you want to proactively do the things necessary to accelerate your career growth, in this video, let’s walk through 3 things that I’ve seen help real estate professionals vastly outperform their peers (in a very short period of time), and the things that you can do in your own career to set yourself up to do the same.

What are some things you've seen people do to get ahead quickly in the industry?

Quality of experience is arguably more important than quantity of experience-starting out at larger firms in larger markets, working on heavier deal volume, working on larger, more complex deals, etc. is a can help accelerate your skill set etc more quickly.

Oh, you forgot to include the government route, particularly with a Federal government agency like GSA, they have a real estate division that does the management, leasing, and selling of government-owned real estate. HUD Housing and Urban Development is another avenue for commercial residential multi-family. Now working with HUD and the GSA will limit you to a salary but it's a good strategy for building your network and you can earn while you learn. State and local municipalities have opportunities in the affordable housing niche market and they team up with non profits for multi-family developments. You might not get a chance to work deals for other asset classes like retail and industrial but this still may be a great start.

I work at a small acquisitions firm in SF and it's going great. However our workweeks are just 40 hours, and my work comes from the deals we get under contract, so the 80 hour workweek is a little unrealistic for me.

WOW! Let me start off by saying that as a 23 year old analyst, this is incredible to hear. I work for a smaller sized firm with excellent, experienced leadership and the responsibilities are beginning to pile up. Long weeks ahoy!

Dude… I’m working at HFF/JLL right now as my first job out of college and you could not be more right!! My only worry is I’m on the debt side, and if in the long term I know I want to be on the buy side, am I at a disadvantage? I like that I can work on all product types in all markets but the experience is not 1-1

Hey Justin, I am a college student working towards a career in cre. Currently, I am trying to figure out what I need to do to land a internship within cre. Do you have any recommendations? A video on this would be super helpful to not only me, but tons of other college students as well.

Hey Justin! Loving your content, much appreciated.
Question for you: do I HAVE to get a finance degree to become an acquisition analyst?
Currently working as a leasing agent but want to move up in the property management company I’m in. Considering just getting certificates and going through your academy.
