  • Gary Walsh makes a triumphant return to the podcast! Being a second-timer, Tony Hale gets into the thick of it with Matt and Tim and admits he wasn’t always aware what was going on in the show. He also reveals how the script sometimes made him feel uncomfortable and had to trust that it would turn out well…and it did. The gents had so much fun recapping we had to make it into two parts! The second part will drop next Tuesday.
SYNOPSIS: At an economic summit in Detroit, Selina's staff and her family are peeved by the presence of her new personal trainer, Ray. Meanwhile, Jonah and Mike negotiate a photo-op with Selina and Maddox. After an anti-gun rumor is spread, Selina goes to a gun show while in Detroit, but isn't happy when her daughter takes the spotlight after saving her from a protester.

The episode they are reviewing is one of my all-time favorites. The tension/relationship between Selena and Minna was everything.

Listening to these three discuss the episodes is fantastic, and it is what it must have been like listening to John, Ringo, and Paul discuss the Abbey Road album.

I didn't realize until now that the gun violence moment about Emily la Fuente returns when they go to the gun show without any character thinking about it or mentioning it. And the fact that no one thinks about the connection is the point. Pretty dark and spot on. Subtle.

As someone who dabbled in the world of professional acting for a few teenage years, about 6 years ago, and then, for whatever reason, decided that to get a normal job, I just really appreciate this podcast. It’s really eye-opening, it takes me back, makes me cry, and makes me happy. You guys really relay what you do well.
So well, I miss it a lot.
Also Tony Hale is amazing and please let him come back. I’ll watch 20 Episodes of him. He’s so great.
    Love You guys!

Reid aka Dan was so intense as campaign manager and we see it in the Alicia episode. He did an amazing job of building his character to that place.
Even hiring the trainer in this episode was so insane but a good idea on paper. Lol

My fave Dan as Campaign Manager moment is when Amy finds Dan in a hallway screaming into into the phone.
Amy asks who he talking to, and Dan says no one.
He was practicing yelling on the phone to someone. Batshit crazy

If a director can’t articulate what they want from the actor’s performance that’s on them.

5:01 I’ve watched this ep a few times (I’ve seen all eps a few times, major fan), and this conversation about male directors screaming still annoys me, so I’m going to post the comment that’s been running through my brain for 12 months.
Tim’s perspective that he’s not intimidated by a man yelling is all well and good. But the notion that it’s fine for someone in a position of authority to yell aggressively at their subordinates because they are just “communicating loudly” is, in my humble opinion, such a male privilege thing to say.
Do you think a woman director would be able to scream at the crew like that and continue to get hired? What about a woman of colour director? Would everyone go along as say she’s just “communicating loudly”?
Women in positions of authority in the workplace (any workplace) can’t even use a stern tone of voice without triggering eyerolls and comments about PMS. Not to mention the reductive and racist stereotypes about the “Angry Black Woman”…
Women have been conditioned to constantly regulate their emotions for the ease of those around them. This director has breezed through life with so much privilege that he doesn’t have to exercise any emotional regulation at work. Like a child, he will scream when he wants to scream, call names, curse when he doesn’t get his way.
If you are responsible enough to be hired for what I’m sure is a multi-million dollar Hollywood project, you can be responsible for your own words, emotions, and your treatment of others.
From watching so many hours of this pod, I know Tim and Matt, are kind, reflective people. So if either of you see this, I hope you can see my POV, and take this with the spirit that is intended. (Note; I know neither Tim or Matt are responsible for the actions of the director).
To be clear, it’s the spirit that we should all be striving to consider experiences of others, and do what we can as individuals to build better work, social, and domestic environments.
Thank you for the hours of entertainment. Much love. Gina ❤
