Yes, that has became more true as the years go by, but my aunt, who moved from Finland to Sweden in the late 70s says that some Swedes do look down on Finnish Swedish people. Maybe it has to do with when in the 70s many Finns moved to Sweden to work and behaved a little differently than Swedes, I don't know.
As cute as Skarsgård makes him sound, the reality is that the the king is basically a former jet-set playboy who when he was younger made no effort to appear as anything but a rich privileged white man who had never had to think about money. But I guess that's where you can see the Jante Law in action: The Swedish people only warmed a bit to him once he seemingly slowed down, married a flight attendant (of course), had a family and grew a bit older.
It's all a sham to charm the international community into looking the other way when they try to take more of Denmark. I see what he's all about.. Underneath that annoying handsome Swedish smile.
@Paul Berevoescu Well Israel has a massive housing crisis, exploding costs of living and massive youth unemployment. Those things tend to turn those few people who are fortunate into dicks in most countries. That and all the people from the former Soviet Union who basically behave like they do everywhere, once they got some money. And it's not very humble.
Today, I got an email from my professor saying that I had won an award for writing the best exam. The Swedish part of me was like "I didn't deserve this. My exam wasn't that good. This is so weird", but the Asian side of me was like *take a picture and send it to all my friends*

This is very true! My Danish grandmother also had this attitude. It's perfectly fine to feel pride and a sense of accomplishment, but don't let it go to your head or take out your pride on others. Humility is a necessary part of your thinking. Valuable trait that allows for real empathy and the ability to meet others where they are without comparison
@NorthernLights ofDemons the origins are European but these modern times they've not much else n common with European culture and people (sadly). USA does really need to learn Jantelag as a code of conduct. Humbleness is a great quality.
@NorthernLights ofDemons yes Jantelov (sorry I made a mistake 😊) I am Italian, and I do really love the whole European culture and historical/social background and appreciate the quality of other countries. I can tell north Europeans are more disciplined (I myself had a very disciplined upbringing, favouring culture and education) and it is a good thing; I really like this Jantelov way of thinking. I wish more countries would be like this....but society nowdays seems to give space only to mediocrity, via the social medias and things in general... and American "culture" (I won't call it culture btw) is totally messed up. They export bullsh*t and I personally don't want any of it in Europe.
As an Australian, This is hysterical watching a Swede try to explain modesty to an American. I am laughing SO hard right now!!!!! We call it "tall poppy syndrome" Down Under :)
I think a lot of Americans do understand. Not all of us are arrogant. He just takes his modesty to a whole new level, where in the interview it kind of comes off as shame.
Agreed. Modesty is not engrained in American culture. As a result, when someone does display it, it's often viewed as unusual or exceptional - they are an outlier. There are some of us Americans who value or strive to be more modest, but it can be challenging when society around you reinforces and rewards the opposite.
As a Norwegian I can 100% relate. I can't handle compliments and I always notice the difference between the Americans and us whenever I meet one. I did not know that Sweden and Denmark also had janteloven though, that's cool!
Janteloven was written in Denmark by Aksel Sandemose (born Axel Nielsen on a small island called Morsø). The fictive town Jante is based on the town where he was born. Nykøbing Mors. Aksel didn't use Janteloven to be humble quite the opposite actually. Nykøbing Mors or actually the entire island lives by janteloven in a negative way which make me embarrassed knowing that my roots are from there. I myself was born in Nykøbing Mors.

Omg this whole interview is so adorable! Hahaha I feel like if he single-handedly invented the cure to cancer he would be like " well, I accidentally put these things together, but not really, and um.. we can all live longer...sorry..."
The point of jante, or at least the best parts, is that if you do something great, like cure cancer, that doesn't make you better then anybody else. Being part of a community where everybody does their part. Like how the person doing the dishes in the cafeteria is just as important as the engineer in the office or the the owner of the company.
@@Nikenik2001 like when the entire staff of NOMA got invited to an award ceremony and all wore t-shirts with a picture of their dishwasher because he couldn't get a visa (or some such thing). "Humble you say? So you think that you are more humble than the rest of us?! Get down from your high horse of humbleness. You are nothing!" -Said by no swede ever, but they all thought it.
I prefer honesty. If you're the best, say so. I you deserve to win, say so. If you're proud of yourself act like it. Most humbleness is just a lie to prevent people from being jealous and envious of you. I dont value that.
My Swedish great grandmother used to say " one should believe they're no more than anyone else but no less than anyone else either " . This is what I think Alexander means... Bragging is so not a part of the Swedish culture.
LouisFGraham : it may be difficult for many Americans to understand that some cultures (obviously the Scandinavians’, and also mine - I’m Belgian) value humility and modesty as qualities, we are taught from childhood not to flaunt our achievements but to acknowledge others’ forte. Saying ‘I am the best and I deserve to win’ is inconceivable, it’s putting oneself before everybody else. Considering humility as a hypocritical attitude to deflect envy and jealousy from others is a total misconception, which betrays your weakness: if you need to go around in life proclaiming that you’re the best and claiming it’s honesty on display, do you think you’ll convince many people? You’re just trying to convince yourself.
"Jantelagen" is all about humility. That's the core of the unofficial law. That's why Swedes are so nice when they communicate with other people. "You're not better than anybody else" means don't let your success go over your head and become an asshole. Swedish people know authority corrupts and you will hurt others when your corrupt ego grows outside of your own person. That's the point of the people law. Of course you're free to become successful. Just don't think you can behave like a douchebag because of it, because then you're an asshole. You're free to boast if you do it eloquently and in the right moment, just don't become a douchebag in the process. It's a very delicate process in the eyes of Swedes. So what if Skarsgård is a famous actor? We can respect he has succeeded in becoming famous and getting money, but he won't be treated differently from anybody else in line at the supermarket, as a community. He will also very seldomly be confronted with people who wants his autograph or something as silly. Most Swedes might recognize a famous person, but they won't approach, because: "Sköt dig själv och skit i andra." We respect the privacy of other people to a large extent. If you visit Sweden, don't be afraid we're so "cold". It's just because you haven't approached us. If you do and you show friendly intent to communicate, we are very friendly, almost 100%. Otherwise if you don't start the conversation, we ignore you out of respect of your own personal space. If no one starts a conversation with us, we usually won't start one either, unless we're drunk.
The essense of jantelagen is that you shouldn't proclaim yourself above others. We're all socialy equals and are all on first name basis at all times. Students/teachers doctors/nurses/patients employees/bosses. We all have the same human value, no ranks.

@ Zlatan is cocky, but it's also a bit of an act. Treat him with respect and he treats you equally back. He's not a typical Swede. He's like many people growing up in the suburbs. There's a working class macho culture like you have in the projects in the USA.
It did pop into my mind before watching the clip, but I do think I made the best of the opportunity with the material I had to work with. The back up plan which wouldn’t be anywhere near as funny unless the conversation shifted the right way was to work in a Scotch Guard reference, with the downside of not being understood by the younger crowd with Googling.

Swedes sound like Canadians on politeness steroids. Humility is strong with these ones.

This interview is a lovely example of Swedish culture and Southern US culture clashing!
Americans could learn from the Swedes and their modesty.
The English word he should have used and was probably thinking about was, humble. The act of not being boastful.
Seems like a civil chat to me, I don’t see any ‘clash’ here.
Mugdorna Culture clashes don’t have to be negative/hostile/aggressive; it’s just a misalignment.
Selena Almaraz “culture clash
noun
a conflict arising from the interaction of people with different cultural values.” Just like my initial comment, violence isn't implied, or required.
Very nice culture!
I love how confused Americans sometimes get by Europeans, especially because of Northern European humour.😂

@@bunnypirate8743 Even those that 'understand' don't REALLY understand. It's not in the culture in the same way.
Agreed. Modesty is not engrained in American culture. As a result, when someone does display it, it's often viewed as unusual or exceptional - they are an outlier. There are some of us Americans who value or strive to be more modest, but it can be challenging when society around you reinforces and rewards the opposite.
Tall puppy syndrome (: ? That's a great name for it hahaha
As a Norwegian I can 100% relate. I can't handle compliments and I always notice the difference between the Americans and us whenever I meet one. I did not know that Sweden and Denmark also had janteloven though, that's cool!
I'm American and I can't take a compliment. I bust my tail for everything I've accomplished but any recognition embarrasses me.
@@Mariaravn1982 without any detailed knowledge of him (sry) I see him as the person who first put words to our "odd" behaviour. He did not make the law, he just wrote it out.

The word he is looking for is HUMBLE...BE HUMBLE
"Humble you say? So you think that you are more humble than the rest of us?! Get down from your high horse of humbleness. You are nothing!"
-Said by no swede ever, but they all thought it.
I prefer honesty. If you're the best, say so. I you deserve to win, say so. If you're proud of yourself act like it. Most humbleness is just a lie to prevent people from being jealous and envious of you. I dont value that.
#StayHumbleHustleHard
Oh no.... He's always been hot, but now he's shy, cute, and humble too. Be still my heart.
o0Avalon0o I agree!
❤️
This sounds so much better. I want to move to Sweden but this "law" makes it sound like being friendly or being outgoing and confident is a bad thing.

When someone shows an interest in and praises Sweden, us Swedes ourselves are always there to say "Oh it's not as good as you think". We love being noticed but at the same time we trash talk ourselves to try and scare people away. We sure are a strange bunch
And yes ofc Alexander is above-average looking, as he would be in any country. I'm Straight but I've still seen many attractive Swedish men, without even looking for them
Such a gentleman! His comments are so genuine and sweet. How lucky are we to finally have someone with this much character and class in the film industry. A real gem! ❤️
I appreciate your continuous love and support❤️❤️ How long have you been a supporter of mine?
We have that in Norway too. Janteloven. Basically, don't be a show off. You're not better than anyone else. I feel it is a nice code of modesty, and I like it. When people get too flashy and show off how great they are, I just feel disgust. There is nothing wrong with being successful, or wealthy, but there is no need to rub it in people's faces and pretend to be better than others. Like when Trump brags about how rich he is, that's just embarrassing. "I have a lot of money. I am really rich. I am really smart, I am a very educated person. I know a lot of words." Don't be that guy.
Exactly! Same in Sweden, and I personally feel the exact same thing when ppl go "show off"-mode. ;)
I must be a strange American cause I hate being flashy and braggy...and its like pulling teeth to give me a compliment. 😬
@stiras Very well put! Especially that part about Trump!
'Like when Trump brags about how rich he is, that's just embarrassing.' Isn't that a universal feeling though? That's not exactly normal behaviour in any country, is it? I'm Dutch and I feel embarrassed on behalf of Trump when he says stuff like that.
Anna133199 Well he is a caricature of a cocky American but the brag-gy culture is deep in USA.

My biggest crush ever. Ever. He's such a cute pie.
His smile has such a boyish eagerness to it. I love him.
Thank you for your positive comments, I really appreciate it. text me in the Hangouts app so we can communicate more effectively, I'm not always here ,,,, skarsgardalexander 092@gmail.com🥰🥰🥰🥰
I love the Scandinavian mentality, and all the jokes in the comment section are hilarious.
exactly😂😂😂
Though I thought scandinavians would be way less Nationalist minded cuz they seem to be humble.
But rather they are staunch nationalists from what I can see on internet
@@tromboner6061 scandinavians are generally very proud of their country when talking to foreigners (especially when comparing themselves to the neighbouring countries like sweden vs norway), but when talking to people from the same country the generally see many of the flaws and discuss them amongs themselves:) we are proud of our country, but we know it isnt anywhere near perfect
Sorry
@@linneac6529 well more like a love hate realationship. We are proud of Sweden but at the same time we says ”Sweden sucks”. Maybe coz of Jantelagen but yeah we talk good about Sweden not we as people
@@linneac6529 that because Norway is the anoying big sibling that is better than us in everything. BUT NOT IN Sverige vs Norge 2021!!! We kinda won so now it is 1-1🥰
I am from Sweden and I remember having an interview for a thing called NIU, which is a football education school thing. And the coach asked me the question: what would you say are your 3 best qualities? And I just imploded. That is the ultimate Swede killer question.
See I wanna know what you said 💀😂 or did you pass out? 😂😂
because they have humiliated you since you were a kid, so that you even can´t say that you feel good about yourself, it is not humble it is fear
@@31145_ it's really not fear though
@@benjaminlundback8394 what is it then?
@@31145_ foreigners don't understand, this is a thing specific to Scandinavia .. we dont fear success we just dont brag about or flaunt it
You could say that we’re a very humble country ;)
*it hurt physically to write that*
You could say EXTREMELY humble even. Like the MOST humble in the world, easily. We're also very good looking, but you won't hear me say that in public.
So Swedish
It is indeed the oposit: it is a fucked up country, with the belief, pure indoctrination, that it is a good country. You see, when you say that "we´re a very humble country" whatn you say is: despite how great we know we are, we do not make publicity. I know swedes pretty well
As a Finn, I definitely recognise this 🤣. Just keep your head down and get on with it. It's a show of respect.
Alexander, så jävla söt. Dessutom tycker jag att han gör ett väldigt bra jobb när han representerar svenskar. ❤️
Helst när han fixar till prillan.
I dont know what that says but I see Alexander and a heart so I agree with it.
Faktiskt. Till och med bättre jobb är de som är anställda i det syftet, kungafamiljen.

Reggade du det användarnamnet för att få lägga den här satsen /kommentaren eller brukar du lägga såna? ;)
He is so gorgeous. I love his sense of humour. What a great actor and humble guy.❤️
The Law of Jante came from Denmark and it basically says that “you are not better than anybody else”. It is simply a lifestyle of not bragging that almost every Scandinavian grew up with.
Alexander Skarsgård Is Too Swedish To Be Cocky
Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Hold my karate kick
Hell yeah 😅
Well Zlatan wasn´t really raised in swedish culture. His dad is a bosnian muslim and his mom is a croation chatolic.
Zlatan will tell you he's very un-Swedish. He's pretty much extreme by any cultural standard.
Zlatan is not Swedish at heart. He grew up in Sweden but he wasn't raised as Swede. Although Sweds loved him because of football. I can say Zlatan lived a rough life he work hard to get where he is. But watching some interviews he is cocky. While Alexander is a real Swede raised to be humble. His dad Stellan walk on streets of Stockholm wearing simple shirt and fliplops.
@ Zlatan is cocky, but it's also a bit of an act. Treat him with respect and he treats you equally back.
He's not a typical Swede. He's like many people growing up in the suburbs. There's a working class macho culture like you have in the projects in the USA.
"The nail that sticks up gets hammered down." - Japan.
"High trees catch more wind." - The Netherlands
Mark van dijken Funny, the Chinese had the exact same saying. And a similar one goes "the hunter shoots the bird that sticks out its head first".
jay folk “The tallest blade of grass is the first to be cut by the lawnmower.”
I love that, and this thread. More please!
It's the "tall poppy syndrome". As in the poppy that grows tallest gets cut down. Link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tall_poppy_syndrome
So being humble is his emotional scars guard.
Oh god 😅
I feel like you might have been waiting for the opportunity to drop this joke for a while 😅
@@artikagunathasan4040 The perfect time 👯👯👯
It did pop into my mind before watching the clip, but I do think I made the best of the opportunity with the material I had to work with.
The back up plan which wouldn’t be anywhere near as funny unless the conversation shifted the right way was to work in a Scotch Guard reference, with the downside of not being understood by the younger crowd with Googling.
HAA!
What a great interview this was. I just got to learn a bit about Sweden, the culture and mannerism, Alexander's personality and his experiences (I didn't really know who he was but I wanna check out his movie). And nothing seemed offensive nor too intrusive.
Humility, something a lot of people should learn.
I had seen him in interviews--always about his work. This is so refreshing and his personality comes out. He is so fun!
It's really cute how often he talks about Sweden in his interviews
"We come from the land of IKEA."
😆
123haninhk And he pronounced it wrong. I'm disappointed.
@@Bevity dude, he say his name wrong all the time. Å is not A. Its not Skarsgard, its Skarsgård.
Å is like O in the word Owen.
Svenska Tabbar Jag vet! Jag SA att han uttalade det fel! Aj-kii-a istället för IKEA, Skarsgard istället för Skarsgård. Jag blir besviken.
I've always admired how some Scandinavians speak English. I studied French and German at university, and people like the Scandinavians inspire me to keep my German at a good, native-sounding standard.
check dubbing of TV and movies per country. Explains a lot
"What is this?" "It's a hat" 😂
For anyone wondering, this truly and genuinely is how a lot of Swedish people, inclusing myself, feel about achievement, praise and compliments.
I love this man... He's so awesome. Loved him in true blood. He's such an awesome actor. Wow, he's so down to earth. So sweet.
Okay, I like the way Sweden is about modesty. Let’s all try to be more Swedish!
I agree, especially Americans should be more like us 😉
Oh god don’t say it like that😳
Swedes are really racist 😆
