I just watched the hit and can only come up with one reason it happened….Gudas absolutely knew 100% that NO ONE on that pathetic bench would do anything about it. Wendel Clark would’ve taken about 5 seconds to put him in Toronto General Hospital. What a disgrace.

i love hits, they are great for the game i myself liked to hit other players and did attempt to put them down..but i hit them clean...not knees, elbows, face, stick, all that nonsense.

What's interesting is the amount of how many were surprised that no one stood up for the Captain yesterday. This has been going on for years with this team not standing up for each other. How many headlines in the last 10 years the day after a game pointed out no one stepping up for a certain incident. This is not new. This is why Wendel - #17 is still appreciated in this city decades after - filled with heart and soul.
I would have been more surprised if someone HAD stood up. After all, everyone did EXACTLY the same as Mathews has done for the last decade. play your own game, just worry about your paycheck, your stats, and your individual awards and don't care about your teammates. What goes around comes around.

First time I’ve listened to Sid. Nice podcast. This was good info, nice perspective and actually made me kinda sad because I think Sid is right, we were all a little hard on Matthews and the players got caught up in the “whose making how much” game.

I think we the fans need to face an inevitably painful and crushing truth - in order to be able to move forward and earnestly compete for a Cup they need to say goodbye completely to the Matthews era. I argue that Craig Berube is the right coach, not for these players, but for this organization and what it should represent; pride and determination. Forget retool, get out the construction equipment and full rebuild from the ground up. The most talented roster ever assembled, ultimately is nothing more than an era completely wasted.

As a sabre fan, this exact situation happened last year with Tage Thompson. It took a year or so, but it ended up being the turning point for the franchise (no one responded on that hit either at the time).
As an aside, I have no idea how players need to be TAUGHT to stick up for their best players when they get gooned. And it’s a disgrace that Gudas only got 5 games for intentionally injuring one of the leagues best players.

The league needs to set more strict rules that intentional , knee on knee or leg on leg is a no no period with a 15 game penalty and a 30k fine as a deterrent. Dirty players do not belong in the NHL . Gudas is an animal who doesn't seem to learn his lesson.

@abl-z1gThey scored two goals on the power play . That turned the game around. And besides that, the players on the ice for the Leafs were not fighters. Gudas was put out of the game so the tougher Leaf players had no chance to get to him. Nylander and Reilly are just not fighters. If winning the game was important, they were successful.
The team has lacked guts for many years. It was obvious when Perry kneed Tavares in the 2021 playoffs. That was the beginning of the end this coming from someone who played the game in the gladiator days.
It tells you this team truly hates their captain. Do you know how much you would have to dislike a guy, to see that happen and turn a blind eye? It wasn't the team being soft, it was the team speaking out. The message is loud and clear, Matthews is apparently so disliked his team is happier without him. Matthews may be very talented, but this is the team saying they will not follow him and likely that they actually hate him. Don't care what they say to the media, their actions are screaming louder than any words.

I agree with basically everything you said, but a couple things: 1) The NHL posted the hit/injury directly to their YT channel. I don't know why they would do that when they hid it from people in the highlights. Doesn't make sense. 2) I believe Knies was talking about the PP in terms of getting after 'em, but still an incredibly dumb thing to say. And if he did mean the response to Gudas himself... I'm lost for words. Anything less than total outrage in that interview was unacceptable.

I was disappointed that the Leafs didn't pound Gudas after the cheap shot. But I think that speaks to what the team really thinks of Mathews. My wife thinks Mathews is the problem with the Leafs and for me he is at least part of the problem. And no Mathews wouldn't jump in for any teammate. I don't really consider him a "captain"
