  • MY FIRST VISIT TO BRISTOL ZOO WAS IN 1960 ON A SCHOOL TRIP. IT WAS MARVELLOUS. I LOVED ROSIE THE ELEPHANT, THE BIG CATS, THE MONKEYS AND THE POLAR BEARS. THIS VIDEO IS A JOURNEY IN TIME FROM THE OPENING OF THE ZOO IN 1836 TO THE PRESENT DAY. WITH THE ZOO MOVING TO A NEW SITE IN A FEW YEARS TIME ALL THESE PICTURES WILL BE HISTORY.

Who of us who were children at the time can forget Johnny Morris and Animal Magic?

We went on a school trip from Whitehall School in the early sixties and I got Johnny Morris's autograph. Regards Dave.

I remember being taken to the zoo in the 50s,and riding on an elephant named Rosie. The monkey house was like an Indian temple. What a treat

It turns out that the most interesting exhibit at Bristol Zoo for many years was the man who wore his leather pouch and collected the parking fees in the car park outside the zoo. Was this genius ever traced? I hope not! I wish him a long, happy and prosperous retirement. If you don’t know the full story, look it up. 💪👍👍😂

Hello John. Great story. They will probably make a drama out of it one day. The zoo closes in September this year. Regards Dave.
