    No joke, this video was actually reassuring to me. Even knowing, as you stated at the beginning, that colds are caused by viruses and not temperature, as silly as it is the fear part of my brain kept telling me that being cold = getting a cold. Thank you for real.

    • @Kittyxandra19
      @Kittyxandra19 6 лет назад +10

      I don't have a scientific answer for this, but I just got back from Florida with a cold, which I thought was a little bit weird. But it was WAY less humid than when I went in the summer, so I think winter colds still apply because of dry air.

    Some Asian cultures have an excellent way of helping reduce transmission of airborne illnesses: folks who are ill with colds, flu, or such wear surgical masks to help lessen the chance of spreading their disease. Last week, I knew I was sick with an influenza-like illness (ILI), so when I went to the medical clinic that handles my needs, I showed up with a mask on my face and instant sanitzer for my hands... because the coughing element of the illness was really, really bad, and I didn't want anyone else getting the nasty virus ravaging my lungs and bronchii. (Same illness sent roommate to hospital for 4 days, so I didn't at all mind looking ridiculous, if it would help others avoid the same fate.)

    The term cold is relative, for example, today in my region it was -19C but when up to -10C everyone said "Hey it's not too bad now" but someplace like Florida from 30C to 21C would freak them out and they'd probably think they will get sick.
    Just a few days ago I saw in The Guardian newspaper it gave tips on how to not get sick and one was to make sure you change out of damp exercise clothes in case you get chilled. Ugh!!!!

      From googling it, I found an article in Medical News Today that said that "no you can't" and that there is no scientific evidence to support you can. Which makes sense to me, frankly. Your body would probably benefit more from rest so it can focus on fighting the virus.

    I always get sick at least one time in the middle of the winter. I only got sick in the summer one time in my life I can remember. But it was when a unusual cold spell came through the area that summer. So I think it has something to do when your outer body cools down compared to when it's warm in the summer

    2 weeks ago I went drinking with all of my colleagues, there was like -5 C° temperature, I was talking to someone for like 10 minutes in a simple t-shirt, with a lot of alcohol in my blood, next day didn't had anything that would be symptoms of being there, just the alcohol, even that wasn't really bad.
    Maybe believing in my own immune systems strength makes it more effective.

    If being indoors more and dry air were the cause of the cold and flu season, then we should see the same thing occur in desert climates in the summer. Not only is desert air already dry, but air conditioning dries it out even further. If you take a look at places where the temperature is well over 100 degrees, you will find that people spend a lot more time indoors, with air conditioning. Yet I don't believe there is any matching spike in cold and flu illnesses under those conditions.

  • @EqualsThreeable
    @EqualsThreeable 6 лет назад +1

    I've noticed it's not so much the temperature, but rather the sudden changes i temperature. When it's 5 degrees, one day, then warms up to 37 the next day the body reacts differently. Dropping below and then back above freezing temperatures seems to wack out the body spending less resources on fighting infectious things everyday and more on keeping our body at the right temperature. If you work out really hard and then go into a colder environment, then back to working out you may find yourself fighting a cold in the next couple days. Athletes who work out and endure cold weather and hot weather regularly in their exercise and training build up a stronger resistance to catching colds this way.

    • @EqualsThreeable
      @EqualsThreeable 6 лет назад

      SDD525 it just did this morning, it was -4 degrees and then once the sun came up it was above freezing, 34, 35. I also work in a freezer sometimes and walking in and out of changing temperatures forces my body to work harder. The cold isn't making me sick, but lots of changing temperatures is putting strain on my body. Just like you going outside in the winter to inside where it's warm.

  • @saquist
    @saquist 6 лет назад

    This is very simple.
    You catch colds in the cold because the temperature difference between the outside air and the air in your sinuses causes condensation. This condensation (perhaps caused by the hypothalamus increasing your internal temperature) begins to drip out of your nose when awake but when sleep drips down the back of your throat and lungs. Over night infection sets.
    One of the best way to prevent SORE THROATS is to elevate your head so a runny nose doesn't drain into your throat and lung but rather out your nose. (lie on your side with head elevated high) I guarantee you avoid throat and lung infections every time and minimize sinus infections. (Remember the worse time for a cold is while you sleep because these fluid pool in the sinues, back of the throat and lungs as you sleep. That's why you feel worse every morning but get better as the day progresses)

    I don't think it has anything to do with humidity. In Belgium air humidity remains at an average of 80% while in summer it drops to 70. However people still easily catch a cold in and around winter.

    • @gusten765
      @gusten765 6 лет назад +1

      Lord Thanksalot 80 % refers to 80 % of the maximum amount of water the air can hold at that specific temperature. The amount of water the air holds increases with temperature.

    • @agpiplup288
      @agpiplup288 6 лет назад

      Well you cant back that theory up without numbers, first the humidity difference is not changed that much and it is just humidity can affect the chances of you getting sick, not that lower humidity means you will get sick more

    I wonder if it has to do with how people get the cold weather sniffles. When it's cold enough and your nose starts to drip a little bit even if you aren't sick. Then people wipe it off with their fingers and touch other things that work together with what was already stated about people staying indoors more.

      Umm yes of course it is possible.... The virus isnt just spread by human contact, it is just in the air and sitting on stuff. If any human has had any contact with another object a human has touched, including other people, they have a chance to spread the disease. if your mother got sick and touched the wall. That wall has been infected and later it could be swept by the air and "become live again" to infect some one else.
      I know that sounds gross but that is basicly how it is

  • @lazyperfectionist1
    @lazyperfectionist1 6 лет назад

    Here are a couple relevant facts that you left out. In other languages, the set of symptoms that we _associate_ with one of the more than 200 viruses responsible for the Common Cold and the word that we associate with a lack of heat, though they have the same label in _English,_ are not translated the same. In Spanish-speaking countries, they have no tendency to connect these notions. The only reason _we_ do is that they wear the same label, and the only reason they wear the same label is that we _give_ them the same label.
    In ages past, colds had more of a tendency to spread when it was cold _only_ because, when it was cold, people had more of a tendency to huddle _in groups._ Unfortunately, people with the Common Cold are contagious _long_ before they are symptomatic.

    As an Australian, I have to say, colds happen more in Summer.
    I was always confused about that as a kid.
    We're also not told to go out in the cold in Winter at all.
    The dry air thing does work though. While yes, where I live in Australia, Summer is the wet season, airconditioning is a must for most people, and they will stay in airconned places, such as shopping centres with hundreds (sometimes thousands) of other people, and in their own homes (which aircons dehydrate). In Australia, it feels like being outside will kill you in Summer.
    So it's purely a Northern-Hemisphere thing to think colds only happen when it's cold, because we down here in Australia get it at the same time as you guys, probably from all your tourists infecting us.

    Make sure you get rid of all the soap on your hands though. And use hand cream afterwards. Reason: when your skin gets dry (because of soap for example) it can't fight off microbes as well.

    I also suspect the another wait people change their behavior in cold weather is affecting how many colds we get during the winter season. My nose tends to run a lot more when I go out and come in from the cold and I suspect most people's do. After touching a doorknob or other object infected with the cold virus you then might subconsciously wipe your nose with your hand and voila and infection.

    Another thing: dry throat, runny nose, sneezing? Those are symptoms of catching a cold, but also of being exposed to cold, dry air. Is it possible that sometimes we confuse that for just "catching a really mild cold"? And that that's where the old wives' tale came from?

    1. STRESS: Does stress lower your immune system? Then can being painfully cold for an hour, or more, give you stress?
    2.CHILLS: Also what about when someone gets chills, and if someone gets chills that stays with them even after they return to the warm indoors, does that affect the immune system?

    Something i noticed while in high school was that people actually got colds more often during the summer than the winter. During the winter they wore warm clothing and then went into warm class rooms. However, during the summer they wore cooler clothing outside where it would be 80's to 90's and went into 60 degree classrooms in that cooler clothing. My hypothesis was that the constant change in temperature may have negatively effected their cold defense.

    In some parts of the world people also travel more during winter or are in malls more which means you're around more people, increasing your likelihood of getting a cold.

    One of my friends gets sick easily and usually wears a lot of things in winter to protect himself from the waeather; but then i go Training in parks wearing just shorts and t-shirts with short sleeves and i'm completely Fine (once i did this at 0 C).

    We don't get sick with real cold like a dry -30 Celcius.
    The worst is when the weather is transitioning from warm to kind of cold, the snow is getting wet, all the adolescent continue using running shoe to look cool and other summer clothes. The kids spread their germ in that virus factory called school.
    Adult fee,l depressed, eat less or go to the virus factory for adult. The bad mood make us sleep less. Our body loss energy shivering and not enough remain for the immune system.

    Sorry but I question those studies. How long did they keep the subjects in a cold room before testing immune response? It may take days or weeks of cold weather to have a noticeable effect on immune function.

    • @agpiplup288
      @agpiplup288 6 лет назад

      Well they were in a cold room, it doesn't mean they were forced into a white cold prison cell for 2 weeks. The subjects probably signed up to help a study requiring you to stay in a cold room for a bit, while they sleep they would definitely have beds with heavy blankets, they would probably have stuff to pass time and maybe exercise. They were just studying the chances of getting sick in a cold environment, so if they spent most of the time in the cold they would be helping. Also since the study would be voluntary they can ask to leave anytime
      It kinda irritates me that a lot of people think that a "controlled study" just means they take people throw them in a room with something and wait for a response

      Agpiplup Exactly my point. It doesn't simulate the effects of living in a cold climate for weeks at a time. Unless they did a double blind study of populations in different climates or seasons it really doesn't work

    If you have a cold then you feel a lot worse if you are cold, than if you're warm. If I have a cold, especially one that isn't so bad, I'm more likely to still go out and do things if it's nice and warm than if I have to go shovel snow first.

    I once got a cold in summer. The weather was in the 80s to 90s farenheit (20s to 30s) celsius. Actually, cold air can hold just as much water as warm air, depending on barometric pressure. How else do you think the Sierra Nevada get snowfalls of 15 feet (4.6 meters)?

  • @dvvinever
    @dvvinever 6 лет назад

    I have a thought that colds and flu may be more prevalent during cold months for a couple reasons, one many people eat more calories during winter months and often foods higher in sugar resulting in a slightly weakened immune system for some people. The other thought is that we all might carry viruses that are not active somewhere in our bodies just waiting for the immune system to become less efficient. Poorer diet and reduced sunlight could be impacting immune systems allowing viruses to take hold more easily in winter months. Add that too reduced physical activity for some people as a result of weather and some people exposed to viruses are possibly more likely to get sick.

      Wondering also if viral particles that sit on surfaces survive intact for longer periods of time outdoors or indoors compared to warmer times. Viruses generally deteriorate on surfaces over time so wondering how much temperature and humidity might impact that.

    And there is the fact that the immune system works better around a certain temperature... The reason why fever is actually helping the immune system by providing the right temperature for the enzymes to do their job!
    And there is the fact that cold temperatures can cause rhinitis, dry skin and can damage capillaries. A damaged epithelium is more permeable to infectious agents...
    And there is also the fact that we are less active during the winter... The lymphatic system requires some level of physical activity to be optimal.

    • @symbolxchannel
      @symbolxchannel 6 лет назад

      The optimal temperature for the immune system is around 39ºC. This is equivalent to a "normal fever"... The main danger of fever is actually dehydration.
      This is a graph of enzymatic activity versus temperature:

    Some people say it's a myth that you 'catch' a cold when it's cold, they obviously haven't met me. As soon as a cold draft catches my ankles I start sneezing and coughing and will have buckets of mucus for days. I either have a permanent condition that gets triggered by cold, or I singlehandedly debunk the myth :P
