My mind is blown with everything about track targeting. I always just thought of those things as little annoyances that are just how premiere works. This is fantastic news, and very helpful. You also explained it very clear and concise. You are a master in the art of tutorialism. Thank you
while it is confusing I admire your courage to help us understand what seems like an annoyance, something I would NOT have tried to understand had you not tried to share! thanks
I’m a long time editor (15 years in FCP and actual film and analog video before that- ugh). In the three year I’ve edited multiple documentaries, music videos, and some narrative shorts in Premiere. I’ve just ignored these toggles for the most part. You did an excellent job explaining these bits. Btw, the production quality on your video is stellar. 👏🙌
Loved how you went straight into the the video, can’t stand when others talk for 5 minutes before you start learning valuable lesson. Had to exit out though because that music track had some type of chime in it that sounds like a doorbell and my pets kept barking. Had to save it for headphone time.
There are so many different situations in which these toggling functions work, I'm sure I missed some so let me know in the comments! 00:00 Intro 00:37 Toggle Track Output 01:09 Toggle Track Lock 02:11 Toggle Sync Lock 04:26 Toggle Track Targeting 07:22 Source Patching for Inserts and Overwrites 10:34 Source Patching Gaps 11:55 Outro
7:33 I think for Source Patching the reason why its also shown as V1, V2, A1, A2… Is that it allows you to remap the audio (its usually the audio that would have more than 1 track from a single source). So keeping it shown in A1, A2, A3… allows you to drag and remap the source track to particular tracks you want them to be in. I usually work with videos source that dialogue/ music & sfx are separated in different tracks so it can be pretty handy for me.
Inserting multicam timelines/sources where there are both multiple video AND audio streams available will enumerate A1,V1,A2,V2 etc … thanks for this video, it explained a lot!
Great explanation of track targeting and source patching man! You really make the trickier stuff in Premiere so much easier to grasp. Thanks for being such a good teacher! Also nice to be able to see what you’re doing on smaller screens and mobile devices with the ‘zooms’ in your screen capture software. You rock!

My cat crawled onto my chest while I was watching one of your other tutorials so I had to just let this one auto-play. Now I'm glad my cat has such good taste in RUclips editing Videos.
I got to the end of the video and realized I didn’t hear a single word you said. I was mesmerized by your sweet dance moves 😂. Ok, replay and focus this time 🧐 - always great content!
This is great info. This kind of topic is not being explained by other premiere pro tutorials here in youtube, not knowing there are hidden gems that editors can use to make their editing easier.
The first time learned about the blue bars was when I accidentally clicked one on/off and it messed up my project and I couldn’t figure out why. Many google searches later I figured out what happened. Thanks for this video! I’m happy to learn the real reason for them and not just ‘stuff to avoid’
As non-english speaker, it gets me more confusion until replaying more times 😄 Confuse between listening to your explanation or paying attention to the tutorial itself. But thank you, it helps me alot
Of course we all know the basics of this, but you have taken it to another level! Very cool, after using Premiere for years I still learn something new in the basics also.
This is fantastic!!! I also just happened to learn this trick a few days ago... when using up/down to move between edits, if toggle track targeting is off for a track but you want to temporarily go to its cuts without using your mouse, just use shift+up/down.
Immense value in the Toggle Sync Lock and Source Patching sections!! 4:06 V4 had Toggle Sync Lock ON but its linked A3 had it OFF. Earlier in the video you demonstrated it wouldn't move if a track had it OFF. Now I'm SO CONFUSED hahaha. Not sure why that was a special case, but is it because they're linked? But then again they were linked earlier in the video! Bahhh
Thank you! Very helpful video, explained really well. Things like these in premiere make me feel stupid because I'm very experienced in video editing and know how to do everything I want to do, but still don't know what many things inside of premiere mean, although I'm very familiar with the program. Greetings from Germany!
That pretty much all went right over my head BUT now if and when I have problems from these settings being inadvertently changed I'll remember where to come to find the solution.
I have pulled clips in thinking I have no video/ no audio and had to learn the insert/ overwrite function on my own. It is a big relief you made this video hope it helps others not freak out 😂

Lol bruh, my work flow gets faster every time i watch one of your tutorials.
ah man thanks so much!

Think you did a great job explaining, my head is still spinning. This going to take some time to understand.

How do you source patch more than one audio track?

Excellent video! Javier, your brisk pace is refreshing and how you keep to the point is tremendously appreciated.
Thank you for the explanation! But I don’t understand in which scenario you would use the gap function
What an amazing video! I never knew any of this, and it will be soooo helpful! You explained the info in a very clear way, loved it!
My dude! This is incredible stuff. I'm gonna get lost in all your tutorials to just learn more and more about Premiere.

Thanks Javier! Source patching and Gap were both revelations.
As non-english speaker, it gets me more confusion until replaying more times 😄

Wow game changer right there, thank you Mike!

I have to admit I should have studied these options sooner! Thanks for the comprehensive tutorial.
Thanks for making learning fun!
This is great! I can't think of when I would use the gap but now that I know the functionality exists, I have the feeling I soon will!
