"...good thinking, Gibbons. Sharpe would have shot out your left eye at a minute past 6 & you would have spent the rest of the day looking up at nothing with the other,...(slight chuckling) Hogan's just fucking awesome....
Patrick is my favorite character in Sharpe. Without him Sharpe would have probably died by the 3rd movie, Great team. I loved how they looked out for each other.
I LOVE that Michael Cochrane (Simmerson) played the Bishop of Bath and Wells on Blackadder the Second. The Bishop was known for drowning babies during christenings and eating them in the vestry afterwards.
Really must give credit to Michael Cochrane; it’s rare you get a character so delightfully loathsome. I didn’t even recognize him in “Downton Abbey”; his Reverend Travis was so inoffensive.
@Lanakan767 Rum was poured on the wounds because alcohol is a natural disinfectant. Even today, it wouldn't do too much harm to to pour alcohol on a wound if you needed some disinfectant!
@OskarVanBruce THe idea comes from old Greek medicin. The Idea is that sickness comes from the inbalance of the diffrent leques in the body. By removeing some blood the balance will be restored and the health will be tip top.
Sorry to disappoint you. He was supposed to be a Londoner. I’m convinced that they used Shaun Bean because coming from Sheffield thee’s thy’s and thou’s are common speech as they would have been in 19. C. England:)
Actually alcohol slows down the healing process. Though it kills germs it also kills everything else that trying to heal the wound. Alcohol is supposed to be used to clean the area around the wound.
You probably already know this by now, it's been ten years since you posted the question, but back until about the mid-19th century many believed Health was tied to a number of internal fluids called Humours and that sickness was caused by an imbalance in those Humours. To restore health the Humours needed to be put back into balance, chiefly by bleeding and bloodletting, of course the balance of Humours was unique to every person so Physicians had to do quite a bit of "trial and error" to find the right balance for each patient (side note: while the Physicians prescribed the bleeding the actual work was usually done by Barbers, the red & white striped pole now common to all Barber Shops started out as the sign that the Barber was also a qualified Bloodletter). What Simmerson is having done here would be put under the term of "preventative medicine", keeping the blood in balance before they got unbalanced.
They wanted to focus the story on Peninsular War, which is why they changed the that fact as it would take too long to get that point or explain it all if they did it the official way, this of course not the first or last change they make, as there are many to come, another such example is Lennox, who in the cannon is a captain, not a Major
"There's no sin in being born in the dirt, but it's a terrible sin to want to stay there."
Words to live by. Thank you Sergeant Harper!
Bless him, and his soul-stirring words of eternal wisdom ❤
"There's no sin in being born in the dirt boys, but there's every sin in wanting to stay there"... brilliant
some of the writing in this show delivers messages that are better than ANYTHING i've seen in recent television. Maybe anywhere
"....or shall we say it was damned dark, and you made a damned bad mistake."
Oh dear god I am a happy blighter.
"Dangerous street for a Lady ma'am, you should take a Man with you", Serious burn

"I believe the punishment for striking an officer is death"
"Death is the punishment for striking that officer, that was Sharpe"
"...good thinking, Gibbons. Sharpe would have shot out your left eye at a minute past 6 & you would have spent the rest of the day looking up at nothing with the other,...(slight chuckling) Hogan's just fucking awesome....
"Sharpe would have shot your eye out. And you'd have spent the rest of the day looking up at nothing with your other eye."
God I absolutely loved Brian Cox in these. It’s a damn shame he wasn’t in the later episodes.
Patrick is my favorite character in Sharpe. Without him Sharpe would have probably died by the 3rd movie, Great team. I loved how they looked out for each other.

Because he suffered from nerve damage whenever he had somebody flogged. Probably a good reason to stop flogging people!
