    Simple but effective troubleshooting tips for Boss pedals (not limited to Boss of course)

    This covers the very basic of ensuring you have an adequate power supply to the pedal, but fell a little short from the title of "repairing". Maybe you could post a follow up video demonstrating how to check the paths on the circuit board or measure the values of the resistors and ensure other components are functional?

    • @jamelectronics

      Thanks for your comment. The most common failures of pedals are discussed in the video and most of these things can be remedied by even non-technical people. That's my intention with this video and these "fixes" are repairs. More detailed repair requires schematics, the ability to read them and circuit tracing skills. In addition, pedals are generally not of sufficient value to justify the time it would take to isolate and repair at the component level. I do have a video on repairing a stereo amplifier that involves troubleshooting and repairing at the component level as well as some videos on checking transistors, etc. Those concepts translate to other types of electronic equipment.

    Hi James, great video! I have a boss BF2 with a broken power adapter jack. I was going to replace the jack but then I noticed that the pedal also doesn’t work with a battery. I’m assuming that means it needs more than just a new power adapter jack. Am I correct?

    • @jamelectronics
      @jamelectronics  5 лет назад +2

      Actually, you do need a functioning adapter jack for the pedal to work with a battery. The adapter jack has contacts that are closed when no plug is plugged in and these contacts enable the battery to power the pedal. When you plug in to the adapter jack, the contacts open up and disconnect the battery. So, if the jack isn't there or damaged, the battery won't power the pedal. You may be able to get a replacement jack from the pedal manufacturer or check mouser.com or digikey.com and find a jack that is the same form and function. Good Luck!

    • @jamelectronics
      @jamelectronics  5 лет назад +1

      When you push the plate on the pedal with your foot, that plate in turn presses on an electrical switch. You need to find out if the problem is mechanical or electrical in nature. Not sure how this model comes apart, but if you can flip up the plate that you tap with your foot and get to the switch, you can isolate the problem to either the electrical switch or a mechanical issue that is not allowing the switch to be activated. Push the switch directly and see if it turns the pedal on and off consistently. If it does, then the problem is mechanical and not the switch itself. You may be able to adjust or otherwise correct the problem. On the other hand , if the electrical switch is faulty, you will need a new switch. You may be able to order one from Ibanez directly. Their website should have a contact for technical assistance and parts.

    • @jamelectronics
      @jamelectronics  6 лет назад

      If the plug on the wrong adapter was physically too large, yes, the jack could have been damaged. If the polarity was wrong on the adapter, then I would check diode D2 which is located near the adapter jack. This may have been shorted. Also, check the transistor Q2 which is a voltage regulator in the power circuit. Good luck!

    • @jamelectronics
      @jamelectronics  5 лет назад

      If the wrong adapter didn't physically damage the jack, then you shouldn't have to replace the jack. If the wrong adapter provided the incorrect voltage, then possibly some circuit component(s) may have been damaged.

    • @patromo
      @patromo 5 лет назад

      Open the pedal, follow the power through the board, if you fried anything, usually the first or second di-o-resisto thing, or on the board immediatly below it, will be brown and/or misshapen. you can also hit it with your multimeter, and test. If you located a fried part , identify the part through schematics, patterns of rings, or labels on the circuit board, buy a replacement, de-solder the bad part, and solder the replacement.
      If you don't see any issues, then your outta my paygrade. Good Luck

    • @jamelectronics

      Remove the circuit board and inspect the components and circuit traces for burns or other damage. I would suspect a diode near the adapter jack. Check diode D2 which is located near the adapter jack. This may have been shorted. Also, check the transistor Q2 which is a voltage regulator in the power circuit. You can check diodes and transistors with the diode setting of your multimeter.

    • @jamelectronics
      @jamelectronics  4 года назад

      By saying "can't turn it off" I think you mean that the effects do not switch off as opposed to the unit does not power off. If the effects do not turn off when you press the footswitch, I would suspect that its either a mechanical problem in the footswitch assemble or that the small switch that gets depressed on the circuit board is manfunctioning. So, start with determining if the effect switches on or off when the electrical switch is directly pressed. If it works when you do this, then determine why pressing the footswitch doesn't result in the small switch being depressed. Good luck.

    • @jamelectronics
      @jamelectronics  4 года назад

      You are correct, sometimes the switches fail, though its not as common a problem as the ones I talked about in the video. This check and repair is a little more complicated for the average user, so I chose to not include. If the effects will not switch on and off with a push of the button, the first check is to see if it is a problem with the switch itself or a mechanical issue between the switch plate and electrical switch. This can be determined by getting direct access to the electrical switch and pushing it directly while the unit is powered up cabled up and see if it will switch the effects. If it does not switch the effects when directly pressing the switch, perhaps it is the switch. Now, you must determine which contacts of the switch should be closing when pressed and check with a multimeter if they are or not. After determining that you believe the switch is bad, obtain another switch from pedal manufacturer or other vendor and replace. Thanks for your comment!

    • @jamelectronics
      @jamelectronics  Год назад

      There has to be a way to get to the pots. Look for screws mounting the circuit board. Also, try removing the knobs from the pot shafts and loosening the nuts that hold the pots to the case. See if the board also loosens up- if so, then remove the nuts and then the board which the pots may be attached to. Sometimes a bit tricky to get effects apart, but there is always a way. Finally, you can try and squirt electronics cleaner into the back of the pots if there is an opening in the board where a nozzle extension tube can reach. Another way to clear pots is to exercise then clockwise then counterclockwise many times until the scratchiness goes away.

    You can't check a battery with a multimeter. Weak batteries will still report good voltage. Battery needs to be under load.

    • @jamelectronics
      @jamelectronics  5 лет назад

      You can't accurately "test" a battery without putting a load on it, but I would argue that you can quickly "check" one with a multimeter and get a very good idea if it is adequate or not. As I said in the video, a good option (and the easiest) is to just put in a fresh battery.

    Is the pedal footswitch supposed to click. I have a boss pedal and everything seems good with no signs of anything bad. Yet it still wont turn on. And it was working fine with no issues and then just stopped working. Its fairly new too. The only thing I can think of is that the pedal doesn't make the clicking noise when stepped on but I'm not sure it ever did. So maybe that's the issue and just needs a new footswitch cus the one in there now doesnt click when presed

    • @jamelectronics
      @jamelectronics  4 года назад

      On my BD-2 there is no audible click. It depends on what kind of switch they use on the pedal. It is possible the switch is bad or the linkage that caused the switch to activate when you press the pedal could be faulty. You could check the switch by opening the pedal, finding the switch connections and measuring with an ohmmeter continuity while activating the pedal and switch. But fefore you do that, First make sure you have a good power source. Test with a battery only, and then with an adapter. Also, you could check manufacturers warranty since this is a fairly new pedal.

      @s8nlx661 4 года назад

      @@jamelectronics yeah it's been pretty funny how about 95% of the pedal troubleshooting videos always say use the right adapter but never mention the battery is probably the way to go and safer. At least that way you know if it's a good battery it should work where as an adapter may not work for several reasons and not give you a definitive answer that the battery will. And no risk of electrocuting yourself lol. But it looks like this may be the make. It's a boss super shifter and apparently alot of these have issues. I guess it's kinda like they put too much into a pedal that is too small. They should have made the pedal bigger to accommodate all the circuitry and wiring but wanted to save a few bucks. So the heat from soldering from the factory can affect nearby parts ruining continuity. But since alot of them work fine they let it slide when they should have recalled it. It was getting frustrating cuz normally I have no issues fixing things like this but just couldn't figure out what the issue was. But called the company and they said there was issues with these in particular and would send me a new QC'd pedal and to toss the other. They didnt even ask for it back. So that tells you they know. But the pedal worked fine for a few weeks before. So I hope this doesnt happen again especially live. Was just hoping thos was gonna save me from taking several guitars around cuz they're all tuned differently but has proven to be a whole new pain in the ass lol....but thanks for getting back and helping. Much appreciated thx

      To really get the cleaner into the pot, the board has to be raised. However, you can remove the knobs and spray around the pot shaft and then rotate the pot back and forth. This often lets enough contact cleaner ooze down into the Pot to clear it.

      Yes. It suggests that there is a short or low resistance to ground at the + battery terminal. The trick is finding the problem. Check the leads from the battery, check the integrity of the adapter jack, check the circuit board where that jack is soldered in. Also, check a diode located near the adapter jack that may have gotten damaged from incorrect polarity of an adapter. Other than that, the problem found be from any shorted diode, transistor or ic on the board.

      I assume you have a good battery in it, or a 9v. d.c. adapter with the negative on the center pin. Check the input jack, On the circuit board, is the solder intact and no cracks? While your at it look at all the solder. Make sure all joints are shiny and intact. Look for any obvious damage of components. If that yields nothing, then you will need to trace the signal input using the schematic to find where it is being stopped. here is a link that has the schematic www.hobby-hour.com/electronics/s/sd1-super-overdrive.php

Look for discoloration on the circuit board on both sides. Also, look carefully at each component for signs of overheating. Near the adapter jack there should be a diode. Check it with a multimeter using the diode setting. If shorted, it will read "0" ohms with the meter leads applied with red lead to the bar side and the black lead to the other side. Then reverse leads and see if still reads "0" ohms. If so, the diode has been damaged and will need to be replaced.

    Do they have to have an battery with an adapter

    • @jamelectronics
      @jamelectronics  5 лет назад

      No, you can use an effects pedal with the adapter only. If a battery is installed, when the adapter is plugged in, the battery is disconnected by way of the switch contacts on the pedal jack. The pedal will work with an adapter and no battery, also.

    Can anyone tell me what would happen if I plug an AC adapter to my pedal that accepts DC

    • @denismckenzie3086
      @denismckenzie3086 5 лет назад

      Wailing Pines most AC wall adapters change AC to DC and also transform the voltage from mains level (120v in The US) to a lesser voltage (9v for boss pedals). If you were to connect mains level AC to your pedal, it would most likely start smoking🤕 I suggest consulting the manufacturer for information on the correct adapter 🤗

    Fantastically informative video, one obvious suggestion would be to use a soft surface to work on your customers pedals vs that bare MDF top that would most certainly mar, or scuff up the pedal in some way- even a little is unacceptable.

    My first pedal stoped doing distortion and when I tried to use him, it looked like it was using the distortion to himself (Sorry for bad english)

    What is the function of the battery?

    • @jamelectronics
      @jamelectronics  4 года назад

      The battery powers the electronics. If you have an adapter connected as the power source the battery is switched out of the circuit.

    Anyone know why the light won’t turn on on my OS-2 even though it still works?

    • @jamelectronics

      I would check the leads of the LED first. Make sure not broken or bad solder connection to circuit board. Then if that's ok, check to see if there is voltage measured across the LED. Should be between 1.8 and 3.0 volts when effect is turned on. If voltage is ok, and leads intact, then I would suspect the LED.
      Note: Boss effects have a 5 year warranty, so, if under warranty you can take advantage of that.

    Whenever I turn on my pedal, it turns the amp off. Whenever I turn it off, it turns my amp on. It doesn’t work at all.

      No. 1 thing to verify is that there is a good power source. Does it have either a good battery or the correct and functioning adapter.

    I have a pedal that fades out after 15 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes or so then it will work for 5 to 7 minutes then fade out again.

      The first things to check are to make sure your battery or power source( adapter) are working properly. If you run off a battery, try a new one. If off adapter, try using a battery. If that's not your problem then there may be a faulty component on the circuit board. Sometimes temperature sensitive problems can be isolated with some chill spray. Good Luck.

    "Check your battery or power supply with another pedal" ....2.5 seconds vs 6 minutes. Good job, Boomer, your peers would have taken 9 minutes and included a boast of how they rode all the way to Sturgis on their ass.
