I printed the thingaverse rails and ran into the same problem as you did at Ace. I went to the service manual to find out the thread size and all the internet would do is cough up some self tapping screws. So embarrassingly enough I found a M3 tap and carefully made the screw holes very slightly bigger and some of the Ace screws will now fit. Haven't gone an got them yet. It's funny as I was just was working on it today and was pulling my hair out. If I had watched your video first I would have just bought the same ones you did. The eight factory side screws will no longer work now! So hopefully the M3 screws will work as I will pick them up tomorrow. Oh well you live and learn. I would have ordered some screws but no way to absolutely find out what they are and I didn't want to wait forever for the screws only to find out that they are wrong. There is a very small space for the screws to go into and not interfere with the electronics. So I am having to be really careful as to how long they are. after re-tapping the holes it looks like I will be ok. but you definitely did the right thing. The manual saysM2.6 but I think they are M2.5 and I went up to M3.

Extra credit for the Caddyshack quote, and I have that power because I was licensed by the government of the United Nations. Great video.

my wife bought me a set along with the Anderson power pole port ( the whole group in one package) I really like the stand and the encoder protection, the only problem with mine are - I have very large hands and I have to use a pencil to ride my RF Gain when the bands are noisy but otherwise they are really nice. and it works great for the neck/shoulder strap when you modify the strap with good quality "S" biner's . I would like to get that sleek battery pack. I've owned one of these great little rigs since they launched. it's my favorite radio. back in the early 2000's the cool factor was through the roof. but I've always had an external battery. every time I sold one of these rigs, I'd miss it so much, that I'd buy another. so I'll hold on to my 4 year old ( where does the time go?!) FT-818 . I hope Yaesu makes another one with the same form factor, with a better battery of course ! LOL , 73 de N3TGY

Nice vid mate. I got this this product without any screws - not a fake but from a silent key friend. Just for info they are M2.5 12mm if anyone is looking to replace them. It works great and I love my 818 in fact it's the only radio I own that my wife says is "cute"!

McMaster Carr has metric machine screws that would fit. I purchased some longer ones for an Icom radio that I have.

These look like they raise the front panel up a lot further than the Palm Peg Legs on my 817nd. It's good to have the protection for the controls, the BNC socket on my rig has come a bit loose, and the shaft of one of the knobs has bent a little over time, I think I'd better get some of these...and it's a cool name, too!
Just in case you weren't aware, threadlock can attack some plastics, causing them to crack...this may be why your 3D printed legs didn't last so well.

I'm not familiar with the Palm Peg Legs. These raise it up just enough to be comfortable. The 3D printed ones did the same but I'm much happier with this.

    • @TheSpitfiregoggles

The Peg Legs are made from sheet metal, they're pivoted around one of the fixing screws and use the other as a stop when they're in position. The pack contains all the fixings (longer screws and some plastic and metal washers/spacers.They're quite awkward to fit, leading to some industrial language. They fold forward when not in use so the ends (which are protected by rubber caps) protrude slightly from the front of the radio, but not enough to provide protection. One advantage is that you can still use the shoulder strap to carry the radio, if that's your thing. As a result of watching your video, I've finally gotten round to ordering a Windcamp battery; as you say, the supplied one is pretty hopeless!

Recommend think about putting on the power pole adapter. Once yours breaks or gets loose it's too late.
