Dattatreya is pure bliss or ananda. He is beyond three states of mind i.e. consciousness, dream and sleep. He is beyond self consciousness, intellect and mind. He is free from three states of existence I.e. childhood, youth and old age. He is beyond three qualities of mind namely satwa, raja, and tama. In his visible form as seen by the inner eye,he is very beautiful and has his own light which is slightly blue mixed with white or slightly red mixed with white. He does not attach to anything material. In his invisible form, he is immense ananda which cannot be expressed in words. He is everywhere and appears before his ardent devotee in his visible form when the devotee remembers him. When immersed in that ananda, the world disappears for the devotee. This is my own experience which I am sharing with others today.
How do we know who a Guru is? -A folk retelling Dattatreya was sitting in what is today the Gangapur kshetra. Parashurama was in search of a great teacher, who could defeat him, and thus impart skills and knowledge. He was told to go up, north od the Western ghats to seek a guru. He embarked on the journey. He came to the place as described but was shocked to see people running away from the indicated room. He asked if there was a guru nearby. A stranger said, there is no guru here; only a drunkard who is polluting the sanctity of this temple room. He was both curious and furious and went with his axe to hack him down. As soon as he entered the room, he saw Dattatreya with Parashurama's mother on his lap , a jug of wine in a hand , and his eyes red and rolled back. He got instantly angry, with the rage he knew not the bounds of, and picked up his axe. As soon as he came closer he felt an unexplained serene presence amidst the blasphemous sinful appearance. As he moved closer and closer, as though his legs moved on their own, his axe slid from his hand and his knees gave way. Involuntarily his body kneeled, and in the proximity instantly realised "This is no ordinary drunkard, for even without flinching or as much as batting an eyelid, he defeated my axe, and disarmed me." Dattatreya taunted, "Do you mind your mother on my lap? I am a Kshatriya and can have any woman I wish" for he knew how Parashurama was so attached to his parents, and his enormous animosity towards the warrior class. Parashurama, trembled with both wonder and anger, and spoke, "Are you my father, you idiot?" Dattatreya said "I am the father, to even you, O you of foolish actions! " In Samskrta "अपि त्वं मे पिता मूढ ?" "पिताहं तेsपि मूढकृत्! " But Parashurama realised the pun. I am the father of all- even you, meaning that he as Vishnu, is the father of Parashurama avatara. Also, more philosophically, he is the creator of all beings as Brahma. And as Shiva, he is the father-figure of Parashurama as he is the progenitor of the Bhrigu clan. And finally the word मूढकृत् when used as adjective with पिता Means the Father who is the creator of illusion - Moha, and this confuses the beings with his Yoga Maya. Without any reservation further, he saluted and knew this was the guru he was looking for. The lady disappeared. The ale jug vanished. There was a fragrance. And Dattatreya, the cynic Avadhoota, accompanied by four black dogs, was seen in his true form. Parashurama spoke, his pitch raised by joy, but voice lowered by humility, "सुतोsस्मि ते सदा पाहि शिष्यो ज्ञानेप्सुको महन् । ब्रह्म किं तत् कोsस्मि विश्वम् उपदेशं प्रदेहि मे ।। [ I am your son truly. Bless me. I am now your disciple, passionately longing for wisdom. Teach me, with your holy instruction as to answer "What is God? Who am I? What is this world?"] Dattatreya replied, "नास्ति विश्वं जगत् सर्वं अहं त्वं नैव किञ्चन । नास्ति किञ्चन मे कश्चिद् अथवा सर्वम् एव हि ।।" [There is no anything-not this universe, not you nor I. There is nothing that is mine nor am I anything. Certainly, I am all.] Caution- This story is Not a license for the guru's licentiousness and inebriation. If despite the paraphernalia, he/she brings an unexplainable calm, seems to know our background as if being scanned- what we have done and where it hurts the most, and yet can be compassionate to guide us, would be a potential guru on the journey. We do need to be of the calibre of Parashurama to beget Dattatreya as a Guru, and to also get a shishya with the intensity of Parashurama, the guru must also be equally, if not more, capable! And mere spiritual pronunciations picked up from books do not help going a long way, as it is the personality, experiences and maturity which ultimately get us to realisation. With the intensity, bravery, control, humility and wisdom to see beyond the external, Parashurama is said to have reached his objective, with just this one powerful utterance by the first absolute nihilist- Dattatreya.

Parashurama, trembled with both wonder and anger, and spoke, "Are you my father, you idiot?"
Dattatreya said "I am the father, to even you, O you of foolish actions! "
In Samskrta
"अपि त्वं मे पिता मूढ ?"
"पिताहं तेsपि मूढकृत्! "
But Parashurama realised the pun.
I am the father of all- even you, meaning that he as Vishnu, is the father of Parashurama avatara. Also, more philosophically, he is the creator of all beings as Brahma.
And as Shiva, he is the father-figure of Parashurama as he is the progenitor of the Bhrigu clan.
And finally the word मूढकृत् when used as adjective with पिता
Means the Father who is the creator of illusion - Moha, and this confuses the beings with his Yoga Maya.
Without any reservation further, he saluted and knew this was the guru he was looking for.
The lady disappeared. The ale jug vanished. There was a fragrance. And Dattatreya, the cynic Avadhoota, accompanied by four black dogs, was seen in his true form.

[There is no anything-not this universe, not you nor I. There is nothing that is mine nor am I anything. Certainly, I am all.]
