We Kansas fans are known as Wheatheads! I saw the original 6 members in concert 8 times between 1974 and 1982. Best band EVER! Especially live. So tight.
Yes I saw them 4 times back in that time period and I will tell you that one of the best concerts that I have had the pleasure of going to was Kansas and ELO and they both came out on stage at the end and they did this song together and they also did Telephone line and you are talking about playing a tight show ,well it was like they each had played the other's song because they kinda traded off their lyrics . Best show hands down ❤❤
This lineup was not the original, but Kansas III. There were two previous incarnations of Kansas before the one that became famous. Kerry Livgren reunited the Kansas II lineup in 2004 under the name Proto-Kaw which basically means “First Kansas”. Proto-Kaw released the album “Before Became After” in 2004.
@@Boggedy They never actually called them Kansas III officially. It’s was just how they differentiated the different lineups. In 2002 they released the album Early Recordings from Kansas 1971-1973. It featured the Kansas II lineup which is the group Kerry reunited in 2004 under the name Proto-Kaw. I am from Kansas and have followed their evolution and have seen them live multiple times.
One of my favorite Kansas songs! I saw them on the Leftoverture tour back in 1977 or something at a very small local venue (a skating rink turned into a concert hall). I was right in front of Kerry Livgren watching him play guitar in awe, as I was at the time and still am an avid guitarist. They played the entire Leftoverture album and they played this song as well. This was before Point of no return after which I lost interest. However this song and the entire Leftoverture album will always hold a place in my heart.
I just turned 66....was in my first band in 1970....we played "bubblegum" music....then CCR...then GFR...in 1971 I bought Masters of Reality. Then Fly By Knight.....then I found Masque. At that moment I knew....I would never reach this kind of songwriting and musicianship. But I also knew that 99.99% of "famous" musicians dont either....haha
Steve Morse of the Dixie Dregs said Kansas was a major influence on their music. He would later join Kansas as lead guitarist in 1986 through 1989 and was on a couple of albums: “Power” and “In the Spirit of Things.”
Leftoverature and Point of know return albums are considered Kansas at their prime. You can include Masque, in there for me. These three albums are some of the best music ever made. Kerry’s songwriting, Steve’s voice, Robbie’s violin unmatched.
I'm 60 years old but I'm looking forward to this reaction because they grew up not very far from me and I had a lot of their band equipment when I was very young like 18 years old. Via a roommate who was a senior and about 21 years old but come from Topeka and knew them. Love it.
Ah, yes, my favorite song from my favorite Kansas album. Smoked an awful lot of herb while sitting in cars parked in the woods while listening to this on 8-track tape, in my late teens.
Excellent reaction! I've been requesting Icarus, around the circuit for 2 years now, and I believe you may be the first to do it. A majestic tune! "Journey From Mariabronn" and "The Wall" are 2 more great songs..
Saw them first in Nashville circa 1977 at the Exit Inn. No more than 100 people watching. Saw them later circa 1980 large arena. Approx 30,000 people. Great both times. I have every album, even their current ones
I paused it at the place where you're talking about how much you love them and then you're like well maybe we should do Led Zeppelin or maybe we should do this and that. And yeah it's so hard to stumble onto this from not just growing up with it. But for sure Kansas is a worthwhile deep dive. You pretty much can't go wrong. It's all amazing. And they had tons of hits as well. Check out: Portrait (He Knew). It was a hit for them and it is so curious to me because I don't know if I want to get into spoiler material or not but it's probably about somebody you would never think of and yet it ends up being totally worthy. Put in a way who cares? It still sends you on this journey but it's a pretty urgent song and I know you would love it.
John...no falsetto for Walsh or Steinhardt,bro--always full voice. They both had phenomenal voices. You will ADORE their material-- I suggest keeping with the first 7 original albums. After those, they still had some solid stuff,but.. the premium material is the original band: Kansas, Song For America, Masque, Leftoverture, Point Of Know Return, Monolith, and Audio-Visions. Looking forward to the deep dive! Lots of reactors cover Zeppelin. You do you.. :-) T
Nobody has mentioned the obvious "g 10:06 reat work" Magnum Opus. The original from Leftoverture is great but the live version from Two from the Show is phenomenal.
My favorite Kansas track ever. Seeing them play it live made me appreciate it even more. Superb musicians all, and Steve Walsh's vocals were superior. Kerry Livgren's guitar and songwriting was also tremendous.
So glad you're discovering Kansas. They are definitely overlooked, and the critics disliked them. Everything from their debut through Audio-Visions is really good!
Live versions are even better--the intro has violin too, not just synth More must listens from Masque:(all prog) All The World Child Of Innocence Mysteries And Mayhem/The Pinnacle--the two songs were originally one song, the record company made them split off M & M---listen to both at once
More Kansas please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. They have 20+ amazing songs!!!. most react to their 2 mega hits, Carry On Wayward Son and Dust In The Wind, but those songs, even though are really good, there are so many way better songs, lots better what this song too ;) even though this song kicks ass hard
I'm trying to figure out the classical compositional structure here. This tune is running in some sort of minor compositional mode, but I can't quite put my finger on it. If I had to trap it between composers I'd say somewhere between Beethoven, Paganini, Mozart and Rachmaninoff with a little Bach thrown in for light relief. Some theory expert, please help.
Kansas is my all time favorite band. Terrible promotion department for the band in my opinion, so many great songs never received airplay. My first time seeing them, Feb, 1977. Paramount Theater, Leftoverture Tour. They actually sounded better live! Kansas is on their 50th Anniversary Tour-and may be coming to a town near you? Like all classic rock bands only 2 originals remain but still sound amazing.
It’s not Christian music. Kerry didn’t become a Christian until 1979, followed a year later by bassist Dave Hope. Kerry’s first Christian song on a Kansas album was Relentless on Audio-Visions at the end of the decade. But he was always searching for the truth.
Great observation of the Dixie Dregs vibes. DD. opened for the Original 6 back in 1980 in Salt Lake on the Audio Visions tour. My very first show of my life. High school times. NOW.. check this out live on the Two For The Show album and hear how good they are live..
I was at that show, Salt Palace, 10/22/80. What a powerful musical experience the Dregs and Kansas. Steve Morse played on Steve Walsh solo album "Schemer-Dreamer" released in 1980. 5 months later I saw Kansas in Johnstown PA 4/1/81 right before Steve left the band (big mistake). The schism within the band could have been worked out but stubborn alpha male egos got in the way.

Maybe a regional thing, I've been a fan since about 76 and have never heard that term before. 😁

I saw them 3 times in 74,75 77. Best was Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh. They blew the roof off that 300 seat theater.
Great to see young people appreciating Kansas! No falsetto there, Steve sings straight from his chest!

It takes you on a journey!

One of my top 5. Can't name a number 1.

The thing I never hear mentioned is how skillful the Greek mythology of icarus is retold in the lyrics of this song

its more than music, kansas is a spiritual experience
Saw them first in Nashville circa 1977 at the Exit Inn. No more than 100 people watching. Saw them later circa 1980 large arena. Approx 30,000 people. Great both times. I have every album, even their current ones
Liked this band so much I named my puppy Kansas in 1977.

Been a Kansas fan since 1973.
That whole album is bad ass!
Check out "Miracles out of Nowhere " their best song imo. ❤
Now try Hopelessly Human, the last track on Point of Know Return. Wonderful!

HAVENT HEARD THIS SONG IN A LONG TIME … GREAT SONG GREAT REACTIONS… ROCK ON 👊🖖
Journey..."next".....REO with Terry Luttrell singing lead
So glad you're discovering Kansas. They are definitely overlooked, and the critics disliked them. Everything from their debut through Audio-Visions is really good!
This song turns 50 this year.
and this is only their second album
Live versions are even better--the intro has violin too, not just synth

All The World
Child Of Innocence
Mysteries And Mayhem/The Pinnacle--the two songs were originally one song, the record company made them split off M & M---listen to both at once

I love Kansas ! i have a 3 cd steelcase ! never seen that before ! lol !🥴

Awesome song, but the better "studio" version in from 2 for the show.
You should continue on with Icarus II.
Same album, Child Of Innocence is twice as good what this song
Great track. Not twice as good as this. That's silly
