  • A fire that broke out in a container at the Bandaranaike Quay IV (BQ IV) terminal in the Port of Colombo last night has been extinguished, police said.
At around 7:45 PM, smoke was seen billowing from a container at the terminal, prompting immediate action from the Colombo Port Control Office. The office contacted the Western Naval Command Operations Room for assistance, leading to the dispatch of a specialised firefighting team.
In response, the Sri Lanka Navy quickly mobilised its Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) unit, along with firefighting vehicles. Upon reaching the scene, the Navy team unlocked the container and discovered that a portion of stored cleaning chemicals had caught fire. With support from port workers and the port fire brigade, the chemicals were safely removed, and the fire was contained before it could spread further.
