One of my jokes about the Rachmaninoff 2nd Piano Concerto (which begins with a Piano Solo) was that it was a Sonata for Orchestra, with Piano Accompaniment.
The passage from 5:53-6:45 could be the central theme of any great composer's masterpiece piano sonata, but here Hindemith just throws it in as transitional accompaniment for a tuba.
As a professional pianist, they are not your accompanist. It is a sonata for tuba and piano. In fact, some pieces will be named "sonata for piano and (insert instrument name)." BTW, the ONLY time you should refer to a pianist as an accompanist is when the pianist is playing an orchestral reduction.
Why this is a ridiculous requirement for many tuba major undergraduates: just try finding an accompanist who can play that part and is willing to put in the time to work on an undergrad jury or recital.
I'm sure they're scrupulously following the tempos, but in general I think I and III are much too fast. Of course Bobo and Grierson are real professionals, so I know they are behaving thoughtfully and respectfully to the score.
This illustrates why many pianists have a strict “No Hindemith” rule
Yeah, I felt very sorry for my accompanist "Jack Roberts." He spent months getting it right.
Ah yes, Hindemith’s 4th Piano Sonata with tuba accompaniment. :)
It's like hindemith's double bass sonata
When I played this, i pointed out how hard the pianist was going to work at the end when i would have mostly 1/4 notes.

@@sea7kenp He gave one of the nicest melodies in the recap to the horn player.
Hindemith didn't write a 4th piano sonata you scumbag

RIP Maestro Bobo, thank you for helping me get into my dream school. Your memory will live on forever.
The unbeatable recording of this piece, I can’t imagine it getting much better than this
Probably one of Hindemith’s most harmonically adventurous works.
Played it on my senior recitql, haven't heard it in 50 years. When I cleanly hit the last high Bb I knew I had passed.

I’ve just started learning this and this is my first look at the piano part... I feel sorry for whoever is my accompanist in future recitals 😂
Your pianist.
Well, they won't really be your "accompanist"; it is a sonata for tuba and piano, rather than a tuba sonata, implying an equal partnership.
@@maxgregorycompositions6216thinking of the piece that way makes much more sense

My accompanist was the piano professor and she even said that this part was ridiculously difficult
The one and only Roger Bobo.
Excellent Skills. Thanks people. Thanks to the composer and musicians and to the makers of fine instruments!!!
Bravo bravo bravo
@5:29 that tuba part kind of sounds like John Coltrane’s countdown. Wonder if he took that part🤔
Interesting
5-6/8 in piano and 4/4 on tuba. Make sense.
Collaborative pianists REALLY don’t get enough thanks… 😅
8:35 needs to be played with Jacob Collier on keys scatting the tuba part.
Omg this is perfect 😂😂
