I was TDY there in the earlier 1970s. I was there training. From the USAFSS 6950th Security Group RAF Chicksands, UK to the 6910th Security Group. The barracks I bunked in was the best I have ever seen. I was there in the winter so there was snow everywhere but you could walk around in the barracks wearing shower shoes jeans and a T-shirt and be toasty warm. The building was thick granite walled with a tiled and heated floor. There was a bierkeller in the basement that had been the stalls for cavalry horses. While I was there I talked with a group of German maintenance guys. They said they had crewed the .88s in the area during WWII. It was astonishing to talk with them about the war. My Father was a flight engineer on B-24s during that time. Anyway the barracks were absolutely the best. I am disappointed to hear they are being demolished. BTW I went to the Rommel Brewery several times to eat and drink. In those days it was packed all the time and the food and bier was the best. I can’t say enough good things about my time in Darmstadt.
Sad to hear, I was station on Cambrai Fritsch Kaserne from 1976 to 1978 in D co. 440 Sig Bn . Lots of fun memories, I had hope to one day return to visit. Sad. Thanks for the update and video
Adjacent RAINBOW CLUB ... early nineties ... restaurant, disco ... Fridays rap, disco music, Saturdays square dance, Western ... Puerto Rican restaurant manager Mr. Lebroncolón ... I'm a German from Darmstadt.
Hey brother, B Co. 440th Vet here, 84 thru 87. Sgt. Dan Perkins. Thanks for the vid! I ran the re-trans team and headed up the fm radio maintenance. No trees or pavilion was in the quad back then, we played football on weekends there. The Sig Center plt. had two team rooms in the basement, on the left at the bottom of the stairs. I personally knocked a doorway between the two rooms so we didn’t have to go into the hall to go between rooms, so if the doorway was still in use while you were there, you’re welcome! Lol. Many great memories, and sad to see it being demolished, but glad so many vets out there are sharing their time and vids. Thanks again!
Hello Sgt. - Fellow B 440th veteran (2001-2004). I was a subject matter expert for our Node Center. I came to YT to show my kids where we lived and saw this sad news. Maintaining Contact
I served in Bamberg in 1981-1983,so I know how you feel I'm constantly going on RUclips to look at the old place I called home for a couple years 3/77th Mechanized Armoured infantry 5th division
I was stationed at Cambrai Fritsch Kaserne from July of 1971 to July of 1972 when we moved to Augsburg. So sad to hear of it's demise. I would love to go back there for old time's sake. I was in the 6910 Security Group in the Air Force on Able Flight. Great memories of the Stag Kellar and fooseball games.
Great to hear all of your memories. I was stationed in Darmstadt from 1962 to 1965. I also published a video called "Darmstadt the Hill" on RUclips. It focuses on my unit (4th Medical Dispensary). Our location was just outside of the front gate of Cambrai Fritsch Kaserne. Our duty was to provide care for all personal and their dependents. My memories run deep and I truly know how you feel. Stay well my brother and God Bless America.
I spent 13 months at Nathan Hale Depot: 1971-72. O remember eating chili and rice at the mess while the SAC brethren were enjoying steak thrice weekly, lucky dogs. I used to visit friends at the 7th evac. I was always surprised when I heard somebody talking about a 1049 back to the "Nam" because they didn't care for the "brown shoe army" approach in Germany. I never knew the difference as I was on levy to Saigon and was diverted to Darmstadt with a 70-A-10 mos. Man, you really brought back a rush of memories. I, too, am from Detroit, way back in the day. St Francis Home for Boys at Fenkell and Lynwood. Small world. All the best, brother.
I was attached to the 11th ACR in Fulda Germany, 1981-1983. We lived off post, about a dozen of us. That old building, my home for almost 2 years, has long been torn down. It saddens me to this day.
E.L.K. Kaserne 1989-1991, 94th Engineer Battalion. Some of the best memories of my life. I watched New Jack City on Cambria Fritsch Kaserne when it came out.✌️
The Jefferson village is even demolished now....from CFK only 5 buildings are still standing,, the 2 Guard Houses from the north gate are also still standing,,its planned to integrate this buildings in the new City Part..Lincoln village was demolished to nearly 70% 6 vor 7 buildings from the old housing are Used by german Families...the Rest of the area is completely new constructed...a Part of the old barracks buildings from kelley barracks to escholbrücker Straße is now Used as a refugee facility...the rest was teared Down....the security perimeter does still exist....memory field is now Used by a german baseball Club the darmstadt whippets.....many people still miss the americans and the way of life they brought to darmstadt....greetings from germany
One Part of the former community installations is nearly Original....the St Barbara village....german Families bought this Houses and renovated Them...The City of darmstadt hast etablished some memorial aspects for this housing area....only a few colours for the houses were allowed...it is even prohibited to build up perimeters over 1 Meter...this should secure that the typical american look of this housing area stays alive
Even the Stars and stripes is waving at one or two Houses during the summermonths....this Shows that the germans had a really relationship to the Us army in the City....
Very sad. I was stationed in Darmstadt back in 1987-1988. I was on E.L.K Kaserne, The 575th PSC (Personnel Service Company) Sad to see Cambrai is being demolished.
It is sad, I was there from 97-2000, Lincoln village 440th b company, I was a dep. my x-husband was a 63 bravo and worked in motor pool, I used to work at the Px and then the commissary
The Germans totally knocked down Rhein-Mein AB in Frankfurt. They left only the hotel that was on base. The rest was bulldozed for the airport expansion. I cannot blame the Germans for that, as any land near an airport is valuable, especially at Frankfurt International.
@@floatsting20 yes it was but we were stationed across the from the 30th Medical Group our command. Shared our barracks with the 7th Mobil Hosp. and the Medical Helicopter Co. Then our Medical Group moved to Heidelberg and the MP's Moved into there building. We were by the drive around circle by the 440th Signal area up on the small hill. I think our barracks was called the Verdun. You had our building and our motor pool in your movie, sure brought back a lot of memories. We parked our Ambulances up next to the fence past the movie theater and the money exchange building.
Plenty of old German army bases around. Flint Kaserne in Bad Tolz was an SS Officer training base. The US Army was all over West Germany in the sector the USA controlled.
