Well here's my list and boy it is differen to yours. 1. Secret Treaties. 2. Imaginos. 3. Heaven Forbid. 4. Cultaraus Erectus. 5. Specters. 6. Agents of Fortune 7. Curse of the hidden mirror. 8. Mirrors 9. Tranny and Mutation 10. BOC 11. Fire of unknown origin 12. The Symbol remains 13. Club Ninja 14. Revolution by night. I thought Imaginos was heavy, super natural and the culmination of the hinted at parallel world BOC had hinted at for decades. Truly excellent. Heaven Forbid, was for me filled with classics and twilight zone-esque. RBN was half filled with electronic pop music, Club Ninja at least had guitars. Secret Treaties was simply fantastic. However I still like RBN. Top live album Some Enchanted Evening then ET live.but several others are very good.
Love the Drive by Truckers' reference! Used to live in Athens, GA, and saw the live premiere at Tasty World of DBT perfoming Southern Rock Opera in its entirety. My fave line is "And I never saw Lynyrd Skynyrd but I sure saw AC/DC With Bon Scott singing,"Let There Be Rock Tour"
That band is ridiculous. My favorite line, possibly in their entire catalog (and boy are there a lot of gems) is from Zip City: "Keep your drawers on, girl, it ain't worth the fight By the time you drop them I'll be gone And you'll be right where they fall the rest of your life" What an utterly devastating put down!
You have un untraditional taste in that you rate "Club Ninja" so high, but I like that. It's an underrated album, and although I rank it lowest I still like a lot of it. Cool that you emphasize the greatness of "When the War Comes". Love that song! "Perfect Water" is my favourite though, and would probably rank that in my personal top 10 of BÖC songs. BÖC and Zeppelin are my two favourite bands of all time. My ranking is as follows: 1. Secret Treaties 2. Tyranny and Mutation 3. Blue Öyster Cult 4. Agents of Fortune 5. Fire of Unknown Origin 6. Spectres 7. Imaginos 8. Cultösaurus Erectus 9. Mirrors 10. The Symbol Remains 11. The Revölution by Night 12. Heaven Forbid 13. Curse of the Hidden Mirror 14. Club Ninja The first five on the list are stone-cold masterpieces that I rate 10/10. Number 6-8 I award 9/10 (yeah, I love "Imaginos" even though it's not a "proper" BÖC album). Number 9 and 10 I award 8/10. "Mirrors" I think is criminally underrated. Yeah, it's poppy or AOR-ish, but has great songwriting, catchy melodies and good production. "The Symbol Remains" was a very solid comeback. "The Alchemist" is amazing, and there are a lot of other great tunes. Number 11-13 are interchangeable in the ranking. All of them I award 7/10. I ranked RBN highest of them because I've listened to it more than the others. No. 14 "Club Ninja" may be their weakest due to a couple of duds, but is still good. 6/10, I could perhaps stretch it to a 7.
The video was made with soul, it's great ! The first and second places are the same as mine, further variations are possible, everything is tight there.
Hi. Great video! Doyou know of any albums similar to Club Ninja? Doesn't have to be BOC. Something like a 70s band making an 80s album with 80s production and reverb but 70s musicianship...if that makes sense?
Thanks for the comment. Interesting question and off the top of my head, I am not sure. Maybe Deep Purple’s Perfect Strangers….or their House of the Blue Light. Or maybe Maiden’s Seventh Son. That is a little more hard rock than metal. I’ll comment again if something else comes to me.
I put The Symbol Remains somewhere in their top 6 or 7 albums. Richie Castellano deserves more credit. They probably wouldn't have released anything more had he not joined the band.
I just picked up Tyranny and Mutation on vinyl. I haven’t had the chance to play it yet, but I picked it up because one of my favorite musicians Mike Watt covers The Red and The Black a lot! And now that it has the hippie seal of approval I’ll definitely give it a listen !
My albums ranked: 1. Fire of Unknown Origin 2. Agents of Fortune 3. Spectres 4. Cultosaurus Erectus 5. Secret Treaties 6. Blue Oyster Cult 7. Club Ninja 8. Imaginos 9. Revolution By Night 10. Tyranny and Mutation 11. Heaven Forbid 12. Mirrors 13. Curse of the Hidden Mirror Now granted I don't think they have one terrible album. Some of these have more influence on me by timing as I discovered them as a kid starting in the 80's. Their albums are all so distinct and different thanks to the varied musical talent, writing and singing influencing each song. One album could have 10 distinctively different sounding tracks but that all fit a creepy or dark element. The next album totally different. Their vibe has yet to be repeated by any other band. That's what made this band so different and cool! There's only 1 BOC!
Club ninja deserves a lot of flack but it’s also deserving of a lot more love too! You should give the symbol remains another chance though! Very underwhelmed my first listen but I’ve come to appreciate it more as it’s own thing. It’s certainly my favorite of the last 3 studio albums!
I've heard that Mirrors analysis/criticism a few times now in the last 3 decades: First, when the album was initially released; and about 20 years later when I heard somebody proclaim Mirrors failed cuz it was too disco! Finally, I heard In Thee live (by the way ... Dr Music worst song on Mirrors... huh? Let me guess: because of the harmonica?) in 2017 and I went out of my way to find Mirrors on vinyl. Now, upon reflection (yes on obvious pun) Mirrors is being regarded as the overlooked BOC gem. It's a finely textured fun, rocknroll album that still jams 'heavy' at the appropriate time and/or occasion (The Vigil, I am the Storm). Just stopped listening to Opinionated Hippie. I put my Mirrors record on. 😎 Ok I couldn't tune out Opinionated Hippie: Why don't people who know Red and the Black was originally titled I'm on the Lamb but I ain't no Sheep mention this, especially, when raving about Tyranny&Mutation. Good to see Debut album (see I'm on the Lamb...) ranked so high, but way too much love for the black&white period: They are 1,2,3 on the list.😏. This opinion feels that is far too nearsighted/narrow mind-listening.
Feels like a 'mainstream' ranking Imaginos on 12th position?! I love the album because of excellent songs and bringing me in to a psychedelic journey wich no previous BOC album did before.
OR….and maybe this is a possibility….I really do like 11 other BOC albums more?!?! I have tried so many times with that album and sadly, have never felt the joy you have felt. Thanks.
BOC! I haven’t listened to them in a long time. One of the most popular bands with the stoner crowd I hung out with in my early days as a rock fan, but I never saw them. Not sure why, I was probably broke when they came through. I spent a big chunk of the nineties going to Widespread Panic shows, though, and they do a pretty mean Godzilla cover.
Tried to get into Panic many a time but they never really clicked for me. Seen em live at Bonnard a number of times and enjoyed the shows, but I never “got” them. Though I do like that album that has that Firehose cover....Don’t Tell the Band?
@@theopinionatedhippie470 yeah, that’s a good one. Mikey’s last record. I went to the first Bonaroo, and their sets the first night were pretty good, but the second night was fantastic, with Steve Winwood sitting in on Glad and Lowspark. From ‘97 to 2002, they could do no wrong, every show was at least really good, and a lot of them were incredible. My personal highlight was May 5th, 1999, at the House of Blues in N Myrtle Beach. The second of three shows. Unreal show, and probably the most fun 24 hours of my entire life. Too much fun! And I dig the cover of Sometimes, too. They always killed that one live, they had really good taste in covers. Except when they covered Hot in Herrre, but that was at least funny.
