My interpretation is that he could no longer live with the disappointment in his own choices. He kept talking about how he hid his identity as a Jew in order to "fit in." In his attempt to be accepted by that society, he made himself small, shrank from his own potential, his own brilliance, became a different person. He so shrank himself he even married a prostitute, probably the only person who wouldn't have peered into who he really is. However, him shrinking and hiding himself brought him ridicule instead of respect (e.g., the way his in-laws treated him). The first time he realised he still wasn't accepted even after his sacrifices was at the police station. Then he started getting angry. All his self-flagulation led to nothing but disdain from those he thought were his neighbours. They didn't even give him a chance. Him finding out about his wife didn't really have an effect on him, after all, she seemed to have been doing it for some time. To me, he killed himself because even after all his self-hate, hiding who he is, trying to blend in, he realised that he did it all for nothing. It only took one incident and they all turned against him. He had nothing left, his suicide wasn't defiance, it was an admittance that he led an unworthy life.
A sad story .
I really enjoyed this drama. But a little confused with ending. Why kill himself when he had the proof she left?
I'm guessing because he was depressed, disappointed, angry. It was a defiant gesture.
@jacquiadams863 thank you Jacquia. Makes sense, wondered if I missed something.
