Do you use references or did you memorize anatomy?

For each of these portraits, I had a reference, and I also take examples of how artists I like paint portraits and collect references for the proportions of the head.
But in general, I don't often look at these references in the process of drawing.
Mostly, I make small sketches to memorize some drawing technique and memorize it.
