  • It's rainy season on the coast of Oaxaca, where Celerino Cruz Mendoza has been hunting chacales (crawfish) for forty years using a harpoon fashioned from a rubber band and metal spear. Señor Cele tracks and preserves the caves the chacales live in so he can return year after year to catch and sell them in town, always reserving a bounty for his wife to prepare them roasted on a comal or boiled in a delicate caldo.
