Listening to this interview for the second or third time...This is one of the most interesting talks I ever heard . The personality of an interviewer is crucial. How refreshing is Darsie Alexander : her mild mannered demeanor..Her genuine inquisitiveness .I imagine how gratifying it was for Schnabel . She brought the best out of him which is what great interviewers do. Bravo to both !
darsie alexander is intelligent, prepared, composed, and appropriately sweet. nevertheless,@14:06 schnabel, in his grisled manhood, attempts to "own" her with his snide silence, but instead, gets owned himself, by being himself, aself-aggrandizing arse. darcie: "i feel like i should look up at you and ask, RIGHT?" schnabel: "we don't care" --well then why the fuck do you keep interrupting her and trying to micro-manage and critically hyper-analyze every question she asks, thereby cutting-off her well-planned, well executed direction? -------- as i've said before: 1. julian schnabel is a wanker (res ipsa loquitor) 2. julian schnabel is jealous of jean-michel basquiat (this becomes evident in how he maximally portrays himself while minimizing jmb in his film -- also, if you read the original script (holman), it's clear how the wanker omits parts which epitomize the genius of basquait while melo-dramaticizing the insignificant. clearly, he wishes he were basquiat, but he can never be and will never ever be basquiat.) and at 1:37:50, schabel continues: "there's a feeding frenzy for jean-michel's work really 'cause he's dead" -- and this is the guy who made the basquiat film!!!?? 3. julian schanbel should put his sail paintings to use and make himself scarce (res ipsa loquitor)
That's one way to look at that 14:06 thing. I had the impression that Darsie was unsure of where to go, and both then and also at about 18:00 Schnabel sort of had to step in and direct the interview for lack of clear direction.
+collec tive as an artist, it's simple to see why he does this....it is because critics, gallerists, etc. try to take an artist's work and make it into something that it's not..... other artists may like this since they are not attached to their work and don't know what the fuck they are doing or how to explain it but Schnabel is passionate about his work and doesn't want others to bastardize it.... I admire the way he fights to control his art...he has the right to...it is his art ...not yours...not mine...not hers.

A creative genius.

That guy never learned how to watch his language when in the company of a Lady...

+Liz R exactly.... she interrupts a fascinating dialogue to talk about Basquiat's race problems.....wtf?!
I hate him as an artist and love him as a director.
i think the opposite. his art is genius work. his basquiat movie was awful. maybe i’ll have to check out diving bell at some point
He’s so jealous of basquiat
no he’s not. they were friends
