I live in Nashville and I found an 08 All Wheel drive for an phenomenal price. It has a problem with the steering and brakes cut in and out, I think its a vacuum leak. It only does it when the car is at idle. When you are on the gas the problem vanishes. Any ideas on what it may be?

The timing chain problem doesn't generally happen until the 100 to130km mark.
I bought my 2010 CTS4 in 2018 with 151km on it and I was given the stealership invoice showing the timing chain was recently changed, I think it cost her around $2100 in all.
The thing is you have to keep that oil changed. When I took it to my stealership they told me the first idiot owner never changed the oil for the first 15 thousand km and that's on a brand new car, the second time he changed it was around 12km.
Thank god he sold it, I'm owner #3. I've had pretty much no issues except a new battery, front rotors and a door lock actuator in almost 5 years.

I would like to change the fluid but I don't know if it is too old to change now . the manual says to change it at 100,000 miles but no one I took it too was willing to do it . I guess i should have taken it to the dealership but they rip you off in insulting ways. They want like $600 just to change the fluid.

I have a 2008 CTS DI with 121k miles. Have not had any major problems since 54k miles when I bought with 54k. Alternator was replaced a while back, I did have some leaks from the timing chain cover, I had that leak from a dealer because I did not want to touch that not had the time to do it myself. I actually had a fuel leak but was able to fix it myself with like $40 bucks. Right now I have a low RPM idle and I think I need a new oil pressure sensor because it only reads 0 or 100🤔

      Daniel Thomas
I guess it all depends on the previous owner and how well they kept up with the maintenance. I have an 06 CTS, it runs like a dream. 71k miles, 1 previous owner (my dad), no major issues. When he gave me the car, it had 38k miles. He was retired, so it was driven very gently and infrequently. All fluids checked and topped off weekly, I never let the oil life get lower than 20%. I only use 93 gas, and I use a bottle of Gumout about every 6 months or so.
She just had her first tune up about 6 months ago at around 67k miles, as I was having a misfire that triggered the engine light. That’s the only thing I’ve ever had really other than the sunroof being sticky sometimes, but I live in Florida, so it gets very hot and wet and makes rubber sticky.
Once in a while if she sits in the rain for a long time or we have a Hurricane, it will idle rough for a few drives but always smoothes out. I bought a car cover for hurricanes since I unfortunately don’t have a garage.
I have heard a lot of bad about these cars but in my experience they are very reliable if maintained properly. Most people ignore their cars and just drive until something goes wrong.
My dad had a Jaguar S-type, which was a total lemon and money pit, and now has a BMW 535 and I swear something is ALWAYS wrong with that thing. The shop has it more than he does.

actually, #1 problem with these engines is the lack of baffles on the valve cover gaskets, which allows oil passage in the vaccuum lines. buy after market valve cover gaskets with baffles and the oil consumption is greatly reduced. my theory is that this contributes to the timing chain issue greatly.

I have an '09 CTS 4 with the 3.6 L engine. I know very well about the timing because I'm in the process of getting that replaced right now. Car has approximately 140,000 Mi on it. I can't complain too much. I bought it for $1,000 as it sits with a clean title. While I'm at it with the timing, it's also going to get a variety of fresh seals in the top and front of the motor, every fluid under the hood flushed and replaced, new plugs, coil packs, air filter, pcv, O2 sensors, transmission / transfer case / differential service, new serpentine belt and tensioner, and finally, see if I can figure out where the water is getting into it from. It does have the panoramic roof. After all that, I'm hoping it will wind up being a good car for quite a while.

I gave it a minor tune up with new plugs. Service every 8 to 10k oil change on full synthetic, other than it burns about a quart of oil at every 2 months I've had no issues. Passes smog easily no lights. TPM light is on seems the rear left is out, but its not important or an issue. Installed a Tesla 10 inch screen, and now the car is up to modern standard. I have an '08 CTS Performance with 88k on her. Fan-TAS-tic automobile!!! Really quick and fast, NO major problems EVER. Owned her for over 5 years now. Have had none of these problems except the passenger front door handle has quit on me. I thought it was a programing issue; took her to the Stealership for a reprogramming to fix said issue. [Never said to just repop her, just that the outside handle stopped working!] They had the car for 2 days. When I come to pick her up, service manager acts like it's the task of the century to repop the system, had to do it twice, etc. $600+ later [!!!!!!] , now working, brought her home and didn't drive her for a couple days. Lo and behold, I can't open the door for my love!! Broke again!!! No recourse on an electrical repair!!! So, she's still broke! Thank you SOOO much for showing how to test it and what the switch looks like; I may tackle it myself when the weather gets warmer, as it's pretty cold out right now! Thanks again! SUBBED. I have a 2009 Cadillac CTS and I've had a couple of crankshaft position sensor check engine light codes and got them fixed. The most expensive job was done on the timing chain because when I went to the dealership and they took apart the covers and stuff like that, they experienced the timing chain actually falling apart as they were taking the covers off. Sounded like a knocking noise soon to be that the actuators weren't getting the right amount of oil for variable timing. Hefty jobs. Now that I know about what Cadillacs are about now, I can prevent these things from happening.

But there is a problem. The trans wants to make the car smooth and in doing so runs in toigh positions. If you have this car just drive slow because its been tuned to be a comfy cruiser with occasional get up if needed. If you want to race around get a v8 camaro.

1 Timing chains and guides because people keep skipping oil changes
2 Magnet ABS tone rings falling off of the hub
3 Sunroof drains clogged since no one ever washes their car and dirt builds up
4 Rear end and transfer case hop around corners since no one ever changes the fluids when recommended
5 Door pin switches due to water intrusion in the winter freezing to ice.
The timing chains are not an issue with the chains themselves, it's an issue with people skipping maintenance. Every set I've ever done was on cars where people skip LOF intervals consistently. The cars that are taken car off and not run low on oil never have an issue. I do love the 15hrs of pay for 4 hours worth of work. All the main issues with these cars besides the tone rings and door switches are the fault of neglectful owners not the car itself.

Oil gets changed every 5000 max using 5 -40 synthetic and good quality filters . I modded my exhaust 5 years back with resonator delete and 2 2 1/4stainless low restriction mufflers the car gets 35 mpg highway at 65 mph .Also own a 2006 cts 2.8 smaller displacement version of 3.6 I get 26 mpg at 65 mph. A co worker has identical car as my cts but it’s the 3.6 he get about the same milage . I did an upper combustion and valve cleaning to my car it improved power and response but not the milage still 26 mpg. Remove the clips, pull back the wheel well & took soldering iron & burned out a hole in the "duck bill". No more clogged drain lines. Ones in trunk are easier to access.

The timing chains themselves aren't the problem on these GM 3.6L engines, they stretch/break because these engines burn oil (usually PCV system flaw) and most owners don't check their oil level or keep them topped off.

Only issues here I've had so far on my 2010 CTS is wheel speed issues. First was RR erratic signal, and when I got the hub out, it seems that hub just had magnets 'glued' to the back of the hub, and one set had fallen off, rendering it worthless. The hub itself was completely fine. The second was the LR a few months later, and that one seemed to have a 'magnet ring' like you might expect, and the ring had fallen apart. Replacing wheel bearings on these cars is NO FUN. I'd say a hydraulic press is REQUIRED, but there isn't a good way to get the knuckle in a press to press the bearing out (at least not that I've found with the rears - maybe some sort of jig could be made or exists to make it possible to press them out in a press). Note to Cadillac and wheel bearing manufacturers: How about make either the bearing or the knuckle with some sort of knurled surface to reduce the contact surface area, making it theoretically less likely to result in the bearing and knuckle becoming one or two steps short of permanently welded together?

    • @jayholman502
      @jayholman502 2 года назад

Man, my RR stays malfunctioning. I've replaced the hub, the abs sensor and tmps when I got new tires. It will be fine for a couple weeks then go out and not read anything for the Right Rear only....smh. Wtf!

Timing chains and cam position sensors should not count as CTS specific because more than half of GM's fleet uses a version of this motor making them service items for all of the vehicles it is in use in. The test details are very good, especially isolating the door handle switch vs. the actuator. My one criticism however, is how you let the door panel hang off what appears to be the harness that goes to the power mirror. My passenger side actuator was replaced and I suspect willful carelessness like that is why the power mirror on that door no longer works and is currently throwing an open circuit code, (possibly partially disconnected plug, or damaged wire) perhaps because of a similar action by the installer, or it was unplugged and forgotten. Haven't looked into it yet.

Grrrr, that really pisses me off Cadillac should have to fix that. I really love my car despite all that except for the transfer case. The trunk wire harness is an issue for this vehicle. The technician notice will advise on multiple harnesses such as your driver seat harness but there's no mention of the obvious design flaw trunk harness. Broken wire short can cause all sorts of havoc throughout the car making it a diagnosis nightmare. The TCM calibration seems to be another common problem with a nice loud clunking noise under the console when accelerating.

Then some nut/bolt for the gear shift that needed replacing, then catalytic converter, then timing chain, and I just replaced one of the rear wheel bearings. It cost me $1500 to replace the timing chain (HAD to fix it to pass smog check) I replaced the alternator and camshaft sensors myself, and I do my own oil changes with synthetic oil. A new annoying problem is when I have my headlights on and I turn either blinker on, my brights come on and often times I can't get them to turn off. Complete money pit with my car. I should get rid of it but I've put so much money into fixing it that it's kinda hard to.

The biggest trouble I have experience is the headlights! Changed them every 7 days that is the bulbs finally bought entire headlight assembly.
Then I have replaced 6 wheel hubs.
I had to replace my purge valve.
I’m told that the hubs are because of the state I live in I feel it is a poor design. Then the dealership told me that I needed a fuel cleaner in addition to my tune up well they poured something or did something and on my way home my engine light came on took right back to dealership they said that my catalytic converter went bad and they said sometimes the fuel clean out they do will destroy my converter which it did! I felt they should had told me this before they started working on it because I would had said no to the cleaner and they wouldn’t pay for their screw up.
Then every time I start my car after a few minutes something knocks on my trunk it sounds like someone is in my trunk knocking to let them out it’s funny cause people get in my car for a ride and when my car knocks they always say what is that! I tell them it’s my ghost. Lol.

I have the stabilitrack, abs and all wheel drive off lights on. This only occurs when someone sits in the passenger seat. It will then turn the dash lights on bright and turn the radio and heat/air systems off. It will continue to alert with the buzzer in several minute intervals till they get out of the passenger seat. This has to be electrical…more like a short than mechanical? Anybody??

Hi there ' I have a 2011 CTS Wagon and the engine light came on I took it to the dealership and they are having a hard time finding out what's wrong with it I kind believe. It's been in the shop for a week now . I told them to check the all four sensors but the traction control sensor cause the wheel in the back felt like it was turning more when I took off . Could that be the problem 🤔

I've ordered two hub bearing from you guys and they've fixed my issue 👍 can you post a blend door video for this cadillac cts . Mine is starting to make a clicking noise . I'm wondering if it a common problem for this vehicle.

Yeah all facts I've had my 08 cts for years now and those were all the problems I've had with it, the purge value I changed myself had hard starts after putting gas in my car, good now the chains where stretched as well.

I saw one of those CTS's at my local LKQ auto salvage yard. It was in pretty good shape. Must have given the owner alot of headaches.
