I really appreciate how open Tim and Ella are with their children. Parents are the guiding force in a child's life. I never received the facts of life talk, so I was oblivious to anything but I am a senior citizen and those kind of talks were taboo. What I did teach my children is sex is God's way are bringing couples together and not to be used as recreation sport. It is to recreate and grow the family's legacy. When I taught Sunday school I would tell my young people sex before marriage is like sneaking and opening a Christmas gift before Christmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate). It loses its pleasure, enjoyment and excitement. The honeymoon is like Christmas, who wants to open a gift they have already seen?

I am a parent and a psychologist and I totally agree with your approach regarding open parenting. Too often, children are made to believe that adults and more specifically "parents" never made bad choices, are not human and are beyond approach. Sometimes this contributes to children "feeling less than, keeping secrets and suppressing who they really are. I love the way both of you seem to take every opportunity to teach, praise, correct and support your children. It is a joy to watch!

I love the transparency. It’s healthy. The important thing to me is that there are still some boundaries on what kids listen to. For example, although the normal songs are questionable these days, some songs are too explicit for young ears, even for teaching purposes. I remember being allowed to listen to secular music, but because of my Christian upbringing, I understood there was some music I shouldn’t buy or let play in the house out of respect for the Spirit of God that was in our home. I pray and believe the Grimwade kids will have the same conviction as they go forth and get older bc it’s so very important what we let in our eye and ear gates. I believe Tim & Ella teach them the right things! That is a blessing!!

Good conversation. I took the same approach with my daughter early on too. There are lots of emotional and physical traps out there...I wanted to make sure she was prepared. And she was. We talked of puppy love and real love....of communicable diseases...of pregnancy...of drug use and alcohol. This is what we need to do as parents. It is our duty and responsibility to educate and prepare our kids for the world. My 27 yo hasn't always made the steady decision but she always comes back to her foundation and makes a correction.

I wish I had this type of relationship with my parents growing up But in a strict catholic home, I was made afraid of it and it caused me a lot of problems. Now at 40 I now know I am not a freak and that not being like other people didn't mean I there was something wrong with me. I was in the military when I met my children’s father, I would always think about the what if’s, but at that time it did get away from me. You never know what might happen so you need to be prepared. It is good that the children are learning from what you went through and they have an idea of what you as parents expect from them. I guess what I am saying is setting the example. First let me say that I was one of those people who didnt know what the word Respect meant as a child, and growing without anyone correcting me, until I became a young adult and learned a lot about not only that song but other songs as well. yeah there are quite a lot but they had to be a tad bit more tactful then, but now it's in your face, sometimes. Your talks with your family I'm sure help me and probably others who dont know how to explain it to the children or even understand it themselves. The struggle is real. I really appreciate how open Tim and Ella are with their children. Parents are the guiding force in a child's life. I never received the facts of life talk, so I was oblivious to anything but I am a senior citizen and those kind of talks were taboo. What I did teach my children is sex is God's way are bringing couples together and not to be used as recreation sport. It is to recreate and grow the family's legacy. When I taught Sunday school I would tell my young people sex before marriage is like sneaking and opening a Christmas gift before Christmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate). It loses its pleasure, enjoyment and excitement. The honeymoon is like Christmas, who wants to open a gift they have already seen?

I am a parent and a psychologist and I totally agree with your approach regarding open parenting. Too often, children are made to believe that adults and more specifically "parents" never made bad choices, are not human and are beyond approach. Sometimes this contributes to children "feeling less than, keeping secrets and suppressing who they really are. I love the way both of you seem to take every opportunity to teach, praise, correct and support your children. It is a joy to watch!

I love the transparency. It’s healthy. The important thing to me is that there are still some boundaries on what kids listen to. For example, although the normal songs are questionable these days, some songs are too explicit for young ears, even for teaching purposes. I remember being allowed to listen to secular music, but because of my Christian upbringing, I understood there was some music I shouldn’t buy or let play in the house out of respect for the Spirit of God that was in our home. I pray and believe the Grimwade kids will have the same conviction as they go forth and get older bc it’s so very important what we let in our eye and ear gates. I believe Tim & Ella teach them the right things! That is a blessing!!

Good conversation. I took the same approach with my daughter early on too. There are lots of emotional and physical traps out there...I wanted to make sure she was prepared. And she was. We talked of puppy love and real love....of communicable diseases...of pregnancy...of drug use and alcohol. This is what we need to do as parents. It is our duty and responsibility to educate and prepare our kids for the world. My 27 yo hasn't always made the steady decision but she always comes back to her foundation and makes a correction.

I wish I had this type of relationship with my parents growing up But in a strict catholic home, I was made afraid of it and it caused me a lot of problems. Now at 40 I now know I am not a freak and that not being like other people didn't mean I there was something wrong with me. I do not have children YET but if I did, I would definitely be open and communicate with them and not make them feel afraid like I did.

I always tried to answer my kids as honest as possible without confusing them. Their grown adults now & hopefully they teach their kids the same. I think it protects them with honesty as well.

It is hard to try to stay focused when stuff happens and you think oh my gosh we should have thought before that.
I was in the military when I met my children’s father, I would always think about the what if’s, but at that time it did get away from me.
You never know what might happen so you need to be prepared.
It is good that the children are learning from what you went through and they have an idea of what you as parents expect from them.
I guess what I am saying is setting the example. I am glad Hez and Hosanna understands. I am saying the two because the set the example for the younger ones. They are going to be closely watch by the their siblings.

Your conversation with your children is such a positive blueprint for young adults that are inquisitive about sex and the value of sex. Your sharing the consequences of what could happen in premarital sex was an extremely valuable. Some young people think they are invincible and misfortunate can not happen to them but to hear it from such a commendable couple (with your children) can sometimes make a pertinent difference and even perhaps generate this conversation with their parents.
