It feels like this is competing with Arcadia Quest in terms of its broad style of gameplay, but at a ridiculous price point. I kind of wish they just resurrected Dungeon Command again instead for a D&D-based skirmish game.
It's almost sad to be severe on a new title.. but I noticed problems with this one from the overview. Also, no art on the item cards in 2023, that's a no go.
Half-baked. Can't imagine bringing this out over any other 2 player game, include skirmish games like Descent, Imperial Assault, X-Wing, Legion, Gloomhaven etc. etc. Even the box looks like it's been in a window for a couple years and the sun washed it out.
Two things: Board doesn't have terrain markings for reusability. Different scenarios may modify different parts of the board (and you can use it for the TTRPG). Also miniatures can be proxied because you can buy the miniature-less version which is why they went with silhouette art.
Guys, it’s a bit remiss of you to not comment on the price of this being extremely high, especially in the current economy. When you factor in all of the negative points you raised PLUS the most important factor of massive price this is too generous a review.
I've been a D&D player for over 30 years so everything in this is very familiar. I'd also give it a 6.5. It's fine. Fun, but ineligant. I'd rather play Summoner Wars. Might even rather play their old skirmish game, Dungeon Command.
Typically I don’t think they bring price into their reviews. But yes the price is absolutely outrageous, I mean at the price point you might as well start looking at warhammer.
I'm glad they said it so I don't feel so bad feeling the same way. Controlling five characters in many games isn't unbearable, but here with all the dials and cards, it does feel like a lot. It probably wouldn't if this game was in regular rotation in your group, or if you made it a lifestyle game and attended the organized events WizKids is having for it. But in my case, it isn't going to see consistent play, we are going to have to constantly look up what everything does, there is no time for us to really synergize our characters efficiently, so as a pick up game once every few months, it is quite a bit to deal with.
👍 Pre-painted 👍 Battle mats 👎 No solo mode 👎 IP currently has bad PR 👎 Too much to keep track of 👎 Crazy price when 2 player skirmish games are a dime a dozen
Game's direction is weird and does nothing for me. Also the recent D&D board games are absurdly overpriced. For what you get in the box Onslaught, Warriors of Krynn and Trials of Tempus are all HARD passes. Usually I would buy such games, because I like the D&D IP and you can always use the minis for your campaign and never play the actual game. But this? I'm good, thanks. I'm still bewildered as to why we didn't get a cool Spelljammer board game along with the setting and adventure books last year(those strange 60 page books). Makes you really question the suits at WotC and how inadequately they handle their IPs
This is actually a GREAT game for a D&D fan. Easy to learn if your already a DnD player but not hard for those not. Price point is eh... but I still highly recommend this game. Watch the how to play videos. Literally 95% of reviews are positive the Dice Tower guys have their negative review but almost all others are positive other than whining about price point. If you love DnD this is a must have. You can also Proxy other minis and this game will be highly customizable in the future.
This game reminds me a bit of some custom print-and-play skirmish games that my friends and I used to make at home. And while I enjoyed those games, it does feel weird to see an official D&D-themed game have only about as much going on with it as something that my friends and I would come up with on a whim one day because we were bored.
Well, i really enjoy the game, managing all the characters and getting to know them is a lot of the fun. Great game, not perfect in any way, but we really enjoy it.😊 Good review guys, just dont agree with you both.😊
I wonder if Roy has made the connection between this and the Adventure Begins game that he recently threw shade at - from the predetermined damage amounts to the somewhat lackluster "special abilities", this feels very much like Advanced Adventure Begins skirmish game.
The dial is not on the base because that is a major flaw of Heroclix. You get hit, so you pick up the hero to change the dial..."Where was the hero again? Let's say it's here. No, it was about here. Well it couldn't been here because it wasn't in range o f my hero." Major flaw.
Dice tower variety of 'score graphics' when shown, in each different video, is like when my kid prepares a powerpoint for school and chooses a different transition for every slide...
Thank you for the honest review. I had a bad feeling about this when I saw the components and price. Another BIG mistake by WotC...they keep showing how disconnected they are from their community. Nobody wanted an overly complex, overly pricey DnD Skirmish game that isn't compatible with DnD RPG.
Wow, I was in love with the old one DnD miniatures skirmish game from early 2000's. I've been waiting all this years for something similar, and finally it's here! Superhyped!
Dungeon Command was a much better D&D skirmish game. Why couldn't they re-release that?
I LOVED Dungeon Command!

Name a good skirmish game!
Sounds like an ok game that needs improvement.
$140+tax for what is in the box = Hard pass for me.

Is gloomhaven a skirmish game? I thought it was PVE
I still prefer Dungeon Command over this.
Always good to hear Roy’s thoughts on these new games, he really gets a lot of the more complicated ones. 🎉

Thanks for shouting out the miniatureless version...as I am not a fan of prepainted minis.
I'm going to stick with the older D&D Adventure Games. Gameplay is a lot better, and it's cooperative as D&D should be.

Dungeon Command is fun!
Pretty sure this comes with a hefty $140 MSRP as well. :(
Ya . I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned, a big minus because of that for me.
Yeah the price is bloody insane which wil probably turn off many potential players.
Why is no one mentioning the crazy price!
Typically I don’t think they bring price into their reviews. But yes the price is absolutely outrageous, I mean at the price point you might as well start looking at warhammer.

...Why couldnt they continue on with Dungeon Command. The game was amazing. I own all the dungeon commands.
👍 Pre-painted
👍 Battle mats
👎 No solo mode
👎 IP currently has bad PR
👎 Too much to keep track of
👎 Crazy price when 2 player skirmish games are a dime a dozen
The usability concerns in this game are very strange. It's not like they haven't solved it in those 'Clix products before.

WOTC just doesn’t care. Hasbro should sell off the D&D brand if they’re just going to turn it into crap like this.
who gave the direction to take all colour off the cover?
Actually my son and i really enjoyed this. Price point is high but if youra dnd fan its a great game. Can also use the minis in dnd.

Lost me at 2p skirmish game
Definitely a buy for me, but at the right price point, so will wait a bit. Most of the reviews out there are positive. Horses for courses.
At this rate, just play D&D. It’s EASIER!
Commercialized worse version of Frostgrave :)
Well, i really enjoy the game, managing all the characters and getting to know them is a lot of the fun. Great game, not perfect in any way, but we really enjoy it.😊

Looks like a component source to me. Game looks a bit meh. But contents useful. As i have enough bits, i'll pass.
I don't get why, if you want to roleplay, you don't just roleplay?
This game or the old Dungeon Command? 🤔
This is basically fancy Frostgrave.
Disappointing but not a total surprise.
Feels like a foil to Arcadia Quest.
..Meh

DnD products have a horrible price to quality ratio. They're greedy. Play other RPGs.
This is not a DnD product. This is a Wizkids product. Has nothing to do with RPG. All Wizkids products are overpriced. DnD rpg products aren’t.
Dice tower variety of 'score graphics' when shown, in each different video, is like when my kid prepares a powerpoint for school and chooses a different transition for every slide...
I love Roy so much, feel his opinion is the closest to mine of anyone on the Roster.

It’s not from WOTC. It’s from Wizkids.

Thanks for taking these hits, Tom. We all know how you hate dice games.
Eh? Where do you get that from?
